In this study, as a fundamental research to establish the mechanism of carbonate precipitation, we compared and evaluated the mechanical properties of cement paste under different carbonation conditions. The research results showed that as the CO2 concentration increased, the compressive strength also increased.
To construct an ideal geosynthetic reinforced soil retaining wall (GRS-RW), the facing of the wall should be flexible enough to accommodate a large deformation of the supporting ground and to develop the large tensile force in reinforcements during wall construction as long as the stability is ensured, but should be rigid enough to be stiff and stable as well as durable and aesthetically acceptable for a long life time when the wall is in service. Facing conditions during the construction and service of the wall are quite different. So it is difficult to be satisfied all these conditions with the current construction method which is mainly used in reinforced wall construction in Korea. Most of this contradiction could be solved by the staged construction procedure. According to the results of cases and references analyses, stage construction procedures make it possible to accommodate large deformation of the supporting ground and backfill without losing the stability of the wall, and to derive the tensile strength of reinforcement causing deformation of the facing. When the facing is a full-height rigid one, it also appeared almost impossible to occur a local shear failure of the active zone, and pull-out failure of reinforcements. Therefore, GRS-RWs having a full-height rigid facing have been constructed by the staged construction procedures that matched well with the theory of reinforced soil, which had outstanding stability and durability, and thus could be used for railways and bridge abutments in Korea in the future.

Previously, a new concept of indexing methodology has been proposed for quantitative assessment of tunnel collapse hazard level at each tunnel face with respect to the given geological data, design condition and the corresponding construction activity (Shin et al, 2009a). In this paper, 'linear' model, in which weights of influence factors are invariable, and 'non-linear' model, in which weights of influence factors are variable, are taken into account with some examples. Then, the 'non-linear' model is validated by using 100 tunnel collapse cases. It appears that 'non-linear' model allows us to have adapted weight values of influence factors to characteristics of given tunnel site. In order to make a better understanding and help for an effective use of the system, a series of operating processes of the system are built up. Then, by following the processes, the system is applied to a real-life tunnel project in very weak and varying ground conditions. Through this approach, it would be quite apparent that the tunnel collapse hazard indices are determined by well interlinked consideration of face mapping data as well as design/construction data. The calculated indices seem to be in good agreement with available electric resistivity distribution and design/construction status. In addition, This approach could enhance effective usage of face mapping data and lead timely and well corresponding field reactions to situation of weak tunnel faces.
The joint treatment of concrete is one of the technical problems in concrete constructions. Joints created with concrete constructions result in serious weakness in the aspects of both structural and water-barrier function. The radar and the infrared thermography method have been used for the non-destructive inspection of several construction joints of concrete structures in this study. The advantages and limitations of these methods are investigated for non-destructive inspection on construction joints of concrete columns. It can be shown that the detecting precision of construction joints using these methods is improved if radar analysis is carried out with a simulation analysis. In case of the infrared thermography method, the shape of construction joints can be also detected when heating is performed before testing. As the result, it has been verified that the construction joints, difficult to be detected by visual inspection, could be inspected effectively in broad areas at short period of time when these two methods are applied.

The structural designs of RC flat plates that have no flexural stiffness by boundary beams may be governed not by strength conditions but by serviceabilities. Specially, since over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the immediate and long-term deflections of a flat plate system, a construction sequence and its impact on the slab deflections may be decisive factors in designs of flat plate systems. In this study, the procedure of calculating slab deflections with considering construction sequences, concrete cracking, and long-term effects is proposed. Using the proposed method, the parametric study for deflections of flat plates is performed. With various conditions for slab construction cycle, the number of shored floors, tensile or compressive reinforcement ratio, compressive strength of concrete, construction live load, and slab thickness, the immediate deflection during construction and long-term deflections after completion are analyzed. The calculated results are compared with the serviceability limits offered by the structural design code.
