  • The turn-buckle inserted between tension members is a device adjusting a tensile force in tension member. However, the measurement of designed tensile force is impossible and the tensile force is determined based on the experience of field workers. The conventional turn-buckle might be used without any adjustment even though the tensile force has been changed for long term. To improve the disadvantages of conventional turn-buckles a turn-buckle which is measurable the tensile force is developed. In this study, the displacement to the lateral direction is induced by the deformation of curved elements if the tensile force is applied to the new type of turn-buckle that the straight elements are slightly curved. The total lateral displacement could be measured by using the micrometer or vernier-calipers. Trial devices for a measurable turn-buckle were made and tested. An theoretical study was also conducted to show the applicability, and parametric studies were conducted. The appropriate shape and capacity were determined by the parametric study.

  • In this study, database systems which were used to select the waterproof method according to leakage patterns of underground structures were built by performing pilot tests, reviewing literatures, and analysing the gathered data statistically. The database was built by using check lists which consisted of 5 major items and 73 subdivided items, and 26 major parameters according to 4 classified grades were determined on the base of survey which considered various in-situ conditions. The database of waterproof methods was comprised of 10 methods which were applied in Korea. From the database of waterproof methods, application ranges and design conditions of waterproof methods were suggested. From the results of study, database system consists of parameters selection database, waterproof method database, and design condition database. From the results of pilot tests, when the database of waterproof methods was applied to design stage, saving time and reducing mistakes for selecting waterproof method were gained. In addition, when the database of waterproof methods was applied to construction stage, effects such as evaluation of applicability of waterproof method, improvement of constructability and post management were expected.

  • When planning to construct adjacent structure by the side tunnel, the criteria of safety zone of tunnel have been proposed. There are no specific theoretical basis regarding load conditions and the distance of structure and the geological strata and the conditions of adjacent structure's location, and the conditions applied load. Two and three dimensional numerical analysis preformed to prove the deformation of the ground and structures caused by the tunnel excavation and evaluated the correlation and the suitability of the tunnel's safety zone regarding the location of adjacent structures and the changes in the modulus of deformation. This paper proposed the safety zone's range is getting bigger as the modulus of deformation is higher. Also, it seems that the possible range of construction under constraints in the diagram of revalued safety zone significantly expands as shear failure line appears on the invert extension line below the spring line.

  • Settlement prediction based on field monitored data, which is used to control subsequent surcharges, is very important in construction management for soft ground improvement with the preloading method. Observational settlement prediction methods, which are suggested for an instantaneous loading, have been widely used in fields. However, they have difficulties in the settlement prediction with subsequent surcharge change. In this paper, a simple method to predict the settlement with subsequent surcharge change is suggested. The suggested method adopts assumptions to simplify the complex field condition and utilizes observational methods. The suggested method is applied to a large consolidation test result, FDM analysis results, and field monitored settlement data to confirm its practicability. From the applications, the suggested method produces reasonable prediction results with various subsequent surcharge changes.

  • The development of high-performance shotcrete lining is essential in improving the long-term durability of tunnels and in introducing single-shell tunnelling methods, where shotcrete as well as rockbolts are used as permanent support members. In this paper, new and advanced admixtures to improve shotcrete performance are introduced. In addition, requirements for mechanical properties as well as test items for quality control of shotcrete are summarized. A case study on the application of the pneumatic pin penetration test which can estimate compressive strength of shotcrete more easily and quickly is also illustrated. Previous studies to analyze the behaviors of shotcrete lining by considering its transient hardening and to carry out the sensitivity analysis of the design parameters of shotcrete lining are discussed to give fundamental concepts on rock-support interactions. Representative single-shell tunnelling methods where high-performance shotcrete lining is applied as a permanent support are also introduced.

  • Suction bucket foundation is installed with the differential pressure created by pumping water out of bucket. Bucket foundation has usually been utilized in mooring anchor for offshore platform or floating oil and gas production facilities in the open sea. After suction bucket foundation successfully was applied as the foundation for offshore wind turbines in Europe, it recently attracts much attention in Korea, too. To estimate the penetration resistance of the suction bucket foundation is one of the important matters that should be considered during its installation. This study carried out a series of model tests to investigate the penetration resistance of suction bucket foundation. And the mobilized soil strength factor was reviewed through comparing the experimental results by two installation ways (e.g., push-in-load and suction) and the results calculated by the conventional equation.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the vibration reduction capacities of a floating track system using a resilient rubber mat, and to compare the results with the track support stiffness and track impact factor of a conventional slab track system by performing field tests using actual vehicles running along a service line. The theoretically designed track support stiffness and track impact factor were compared with the measured track support stiffness and track impact factor for each tested track. The calculated and measured track support stiffness of the floating track system were found to be similar, and the floating track system satisfied the design specifications of the track impact factor. The overall vibration level and track support stiffness of the floating track system were thereupon found to be significantly lower than those of the conventional slab track system. The experimental results thus showed that the vibration reduction effect of the floating track system is greater than that of the conventional slab track.

  • Two-row overlap pile wall, currently under development for use in deep excavations, is a novel retaining structure designed to perform itself as a cutoff wall as well as a high-stiffness wall by constructing four overlapping piles arranged in zigzag manner at a time using a tetra-axis auger. This wall has a relatively complex cross-section, compared with other types of pile wall, which would make it difficult to determine design parameters related to cross-section. In this study, a flexural rigidity equation has been derived by analyzing both theoretically and statistically various wall cross-sections with different pile diameters and overlap lengths. The flexural rigidity equation was found to show the maximum error rate of 3%.

  • The design and construction are carried out to improve the structural stability of caisson breakwaters by installing new caissons on the front or rear of old caissons. The wave forces acting on caisson are excessively calculated by the resonance of fluid existing between the old caisson and the new caisson in the numerical analysis using potential flow. In this study, we used the damping zone option in ANSYS AQWA program to analyze the wave forces acting on individual caissons according to the interaction effects between the incident wave and the caisson. By applying the damping zone option to the fluid in which resonance occurs, the wave forces acting on individual caissons were calculated by the change of damping factor. In addition, the wave force characteristics acting on individual caissons were analyzed for the different distances between caissons in the frequency domain analysis.
