  • When forecasting demand for a new road, a select link analysis is usually used to understand the OD pairs that send trips along paths that use the selected link (i.e., the new road). These OD pairs and their associated volumes are listed in a select link analysis. However, there is no research about other methods to obtain these results, so experts are almost always dependent on select link analysis results to obtain these results. The purpose of this study is to propose a model with a different approach from select link analysis to obtain the previously mentioned results. Time and spatial characteristics of networks are used in this new approach. Select link analysis results are used as a comparison index for the results by the proposed model. Also, two case studies (interzonal trips and intracity trips) are performed to validate the significance of the model. Consequently, a correlation coefficient between the results by the proposed model and the comparison index shows high significance: 0.82.

  • The five major violent crimes including murder, robbery, rape·forced indecent act, theft, and violence are representative crimes that threaten the safety of members of society and occur frequently in real life. These crimes have negative effects such as lowering the quality of citizens' life. In the case of Seoul, the capital of Korea, the risk for the five major violent crimes is increasing because the population density of Seoul is increasing as a large number of people in the provinces move to Seoul. In this study, to reduce this risk, the relative risk for the occurrence of the five major violent crimes in Seoul is modeled using three spatio-temporal models. In addition, various risk factors are included to identify factors that significantly affect the relative risk of the five major violent crimes. The best model is selected in terms of the deviance information criterion, and the analysis results including various visualizations for the best model are provided. This study will help to establish efficient strategies to sustain people's safe everyday living by analyzing important risk factors affecting the risk of the five major violent crimes and the relative risk of each region.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the regional disparity of ambulatory health care utilization considering spatio-temporal variation in South Korea during 1996-2008(precisely, in 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2008) using bayesian hierarchial spatio-temporal model. The spatial pattern uses an intrinsic gaussian conditional autoregressive (CAR) error component. Ornstein-Uhlenbeck method was applied to detect the temporal patterns. The results showed that substantial temporal-geographical variation depending on diseases exists in Korea. On the Contrary to the pattern of total outpatient utilizations, for example, the areas that chronic diseases distributed relatively high were most in rural where the proportion of elderly population was higher than in the urban. Chungcheongnam-do, Junlabuk-do, and Kyeongsangbuk-do had higher risks in hypertension, whereas arthritis was higher risk in the Kyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Junlanam-do, and Junlabuk-do. The results of this study suggested that the effective health intervention programmes needed to alleviate the regional variation of health care utilization. These outcomes also provided the foundation for further investigation of risk factors and interventions in these high-risk areas.

  • The capacity concept presented in the Highway Capacity Manual is for steady-state traffic flow assuming that there is no restriction in downstream flowing, which is traditionally used for planning, design, and operational analyses. In the congested traffic condition, the control objective should be to keep the congested regime from growing and to recover the normal traffic condition as soon as possible. In this control case, it is important to predict the spatial-temporal pattern of congestion evolution or dissipation and to estimate the throughput reduction according to the spatial-temporal pattern. In this context, the new concept of dynamic capacity for managing congested traffic is developed in terms of spatial-temporal evolution of downstream traffic congestion and in view of the 'input' concept assuming that flow is restricted by downstream condition rather than the 'output' concept assuming that there is no restriction in downstream flowing (e.g. the mean queue discharge flow rate). This new capacity is defined as the Maximum Sustainable Throughput that is determined based on the spatial-temporal evolution pattern of downstream congestion. And the spatial-temporal evolution pattern is estimated using the Newell's simplified q-k model.

  • A soil moisture measuring method for a hillslope of Korean watershed was developed to configure spatial-temporal distribution of soil moisture. Intensive surveying of topography had been performed to make a refined digital elevation model(DEM) and the hydrological interpretation from flow distribution algorithm was incorporated through reverse surveying. Moreover, A long term measurement system was established to maximize representative features of spatial variation of soil moisture and operated from October 19 to 21, 2003. TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) with a multiplex monitoring system has been operated for accurate measurements. Measurements were performed at the right side hillslope of Buprunsa located at the sulmachun watershed. The data of temporal and spatial soil moisture variation by rainfall event were collected and the variations of soil moisture were well captured.

  • A soil moisture measuring method of a hillslope for Korean watershed is developed to configure spatial-temporal distribution of soil moisture. Intensive surveying of topography had been performed to make a digital elevation model(DEM). Flow distribution algorithms were applied and a distribution pattern of the measurement sensors was determined to maximize representative features of spatial variation of soil moisture. Inverse surveying provides appropriate information to install the waveguides in the field. Measurements were performed at the right side hillslope of Bumrunsa located at the Sulmachun watershed. A multiplex monitoring system has been established and spatial-temporal variation of soil moisture data has been measured for a rainfall-runoff event. Acquired soil moisture data show that physical hydrologic interpretations as well as the effectiveness of monitoring system. Lack of connectivity in vertical distribution of soil moisture suggests that preferential flow and macropore flux are important components in the hillslope hydrology.

  • Recently, water supply management technology is highly developed, and a computer simulation model plays a critical role for estimating hydraulics and water quality in water distribution networks (WDNs). However, a simulation of complex large water networks is computationally intensive, especially for the water quality simulations, which require a short simulation time step and a long simulation time period. Thus, it is often prohibitive to analyze the water quality in real-scale water networks. In this study, in order to improve the computational efficiency of water quality simulations in complex water networks, a hierarchical water-quality-simulation technique was proposed. The water network is hierarchically divided into two sub-networks for improvement of computing efficiency while preserving water quality simulation accuracy. The proposed approach was applied to a large-scale real-life water network that is currently operating in South Korea, and demonstrated a spatiotemporal distribution of chlorine concentration under diverse chlorine injection scenarios.
