The GPS signal delays in troposphere, which are along the signal path between a transmitting satellite and GPS permanent station, can be used to retrieve the precipitable water vapor. The GPS remote sensing technique of atmospheric water vapor is capable of monitoring typhoon and detecting long term water vapor for tracking of earth’s climate change. In this study, we analyzed GPS precipitable water vapor variations during the heavy snowstorm event occurred in the Yeongdong area, 2014. The results show that the snowfall event were occurring after the GPS precipitable water vapor were increased, the maximum fresh snow depth was recorded after the maximum GPS precipitable water vapor was generated, in Kangneug and Wuljin, respectively. Also, we analyzed that the closely correlation among the GPS precipitable water vapor, the K-index and total index which was acquired by the upper air observation system during this snowstorm event was revealed.

Mobile data caching is usually used as an effective way to improve the speed of local transaction processing and reduce server load. In mobile database environment, due to its characters - low bandwidth, excessive latency and intermittent network, caching is especially crucial. A lot of mobile data caching strategies have been proposed to handle these problems over the last few years. However, with smart phone widely application these approaches cannot support vast data requirements efficiently. In this paper, to make full use of cache data, lower wireless transmission quantity and raise transaction success rate, we design a new mobile data caching synchronization strategy based on in-demand and replacement priority. We experimentally verify that our techniques significantly reduce quantity of wireless transmission and improve transaction success rate, especially when mobile client request a large amount of data.
In this study, we analyzed the beam time series of ocean reverberation which was conducted in the eastsouthern region of East Sea, Korea during the August, 2015. The reverberation data was gathered by moving research vessel towing LFM (Linear Frequency Modulation) source and triplet receiver array. After signal processing, we analyzed the variation of ocean reverberation level according to the seafloor bathymetry, source/receiver depth and sound speed profile. In addition, we used the normalized data by using cell averaging algorithm and identified the statistical characteristics of seafloor scatterer by using moment estimation method and estimated shape parameter. Also, we analyzed the coincidence of data with Rayleigh and K-distribution probability by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The results show that there is range dependency of reverberation according to the bathymetry and also that the time delay and the intensity level change depend on the depths of source and receiver. In addition, we observed that statistical characteristics of similar Rayleigh probability distribution in the ocean reverberation.
As the performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are improving and the prices are lowering, it is expected that the use of UAVs will continuously grow in the future. It is important to always maintain control signal and video communication to operate remote UAVs stably, especially in military UAV operations, as unexpected jamming attacks can result in fatal UAV crashes. In this paper, to improve the network reliability and low latency when supporting UAV operations, the anti-jamming performance of Second generation Anti-jam Tactical UHF Radio for NATO (SATURN) networks is analyzed and enhanced by applying Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) modulation as well as Hamming code based multiple transmission techniques.

In a wireless smart utility network communication system, an asynchronous low power MAC is standardized and used according to IEEE 802.15.4e. An asynchronous MAC called RIT (Receiver Initiated Transmission) has a characteristic in which delay time and power consumption are greatly affected by a check-in interval (RIT period). By waking up from sleep every check-in interval and checking whether there is data to be received, power consumption in the receiving end can be drastically reduced, but power consumption in the transmitting end occurs due to an excessive wakeup sequence. If an excessive wake-up sequence is reduced by shortening the check interval, power consumption of the receiving end increases due to too frequent wake-up. In the RIT asynchronous MAC technique, power consumption performance according to traffic load and operation of check-in interval is analyzed and applied to Wi-SUN construction.

Recently, the frequency of earthquakes is rapidly increasing in Korea. As a result, concerns about earthquakes are increasing. Response and recovery in the event of an earthquake are also important, but it is necessary to identify management vulnerabilities in advance and perform prevention and preparation activities. K-water collects real-time earthquake data by operating an earthquake accelerator to manage facilities safe from earthquakes. In addition, real-time data is transmitted to external organizations. Therefore, various efforts are being made to improve the quality of data. In order to reduce the management vulnerability of the earthquake monitoring system in advance, high-quality data can be produced by minimizing the delay time of data collection and establishing a real-time quality analysis system and base for earthquake data using big data. Accordingly, it is expected to protect the lives and property of the people from earthquake disasters by securing dam safety management and high-quality earthquake data and providing rapid data to external institutions.

Road construction projects have a long duration so cost overruns and schedule delays are occurred. However, performance assessment system that can manage and prepare for this in advance is insufficient. In addition, road construction are affected by many factors during under construction. Therefore it is necessary to conduct performance assessment considering the characteristics of roads and prepare for similar projects in the future. The purpose of this study is to provide a framework to evaluate construction phase performance and present a performance management plan using road construction information. Also, This study conducted time adjustment between the start and the finish of the project and developed performance metrics based on absolute and relative indicator. This study analyzed the cost, schedule, and changes of the road project construction process, showing the possibility of advancement of performance assessment and how to use it when planning new road construction projects.

As the global warming problem becomes serious, the need for carbon cycle education in school is increasing. Adopting systems thinking ability is needed to understand the carbon cycle systematically. Furthermore, under the rapid change of environment, society, and economy, systems thinking ability is being emphasized as it can strengthen the competencies of students who will be leading the future society. The purposes of this study are as follows: first, is developing the systems thinking instrument for the carbon cycle and the rubric for analysis of systems thinking instrument. The second is analyzing the systems thinking ability of students using the developed instrument and rubric. In order to perform this study, previous studies related to the carbon cycle and systems thinking education were analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the systems thinking instrument for the carbon cycle and rubric were developed. The systems thinking ability was analyzed by implementing the developed instrument and rubric to 172 high school and university students. The results of this study are as follows: first, the systems thinking instrument for the carbon cycle was developed, and a rubric utilization guide was constructed. The instrument and rubric were modified through pilot study for middle school students producing expert opinion in relation to systems thinking and carbon cycle. Second, the systems thinking ability of students was analyzed. Consequently, students had systems thinking ability fully at a low level, such as identifying the variables related to the carbon cycle. However, it was shown that they lacked the systems thinking ability at a high level, such as time delay and feedback processes. The importance of the carbon cycle has been increasing since the global warming is the most pressing issue and significant environmental problem facing us today. Application of the systems thinking ability can contribute to understanding these complex problems and finding fundamental solutions.
The performance of soft handoffs of CDMA mobile communication systems is potentially determined by several factors such as handoff-related system parameters (T_ADD, T_DROP, T_COMP, T_TDROP), mobile stations' mobility, service areas, capacity of base stations. Due to the importance of handoffs in mobile communications, several methods have been proposed and tested through computer simulations to prove the efficiency of proposed methods. Different assumptions on the above mentioned factors often produce different simulation results. Therefore, the credibility of a simulation result is directly determined by the objectivity of the assumptions made by the simulation. This paper proposes a new soft handoff method that controls handoff delay time based on a mobile station's speed, and compares it with the current method of CDMA systems. The simulation results showed that the new method is much more efficient for mobile stations that are free in their moving direction and space than for those restricted in their moving direction and space. In addition, the results showed that even the same handoff method may produces different simulation results depending on whether a service area is modeled as two-dimensional space or three-dimensional space. These results indicate the importance of suitable models of user mobility, especially the movement types and space allowed for mobile stations, which have been neglected in simulation studies of mobile communications.
