In this paper, we introduce a visualization framework for cell image data obtained from optical diffraction tomography (ODT), including a method for representing cell morphology in 3D virtual environment and a color mapping protocol. Unlike commonly known volume data sets, such as CT images of human organ or industrial machinery, that have solid structural information, the cell image data have rather vague information with much morphological variations on the boundaries. Therefore, it is difficult to come up with consistent representation of cell structure for visualization results. To obtain desired visual representation of cellular structures, we propose an interactive visualization technique for the ODT data. In visualization of 3D shape of the cell, we adopt a volume rendering technique which is generally applied to volume data visualization and improve the quality of volume rendering result by using empty space jittering method. Furthermore, we provide a layer-based independent rendering method for multiple transfer functions to represent two or more cellular structures in unified render window. In the experiment, we examined effectiveness of proposed method by visualizing various type of the cell obtained from the microscope which can capture ODT image and fluorescence image together.

Nitric oxide (NO) and calcium-binding proteins occur in various types of cells in the central nervous system. They are important signaling and calcium buffering molecules, respectively. In the present study, using immunocytochemistry we examined the distribution and the co-localization pattern of neurons containing neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and parvalbumin in the visual cortex of hamster. The overall number of parvalbumin-immunoreactive (IR) neurons was 17 times higher than that of the nNOS-IR neurons in the hamster visual cortex. The highest differences were found in layer V, where parvalbumin-IR neurons were 54.7 times more abundant than nNOS-IR neurons. Many nNOS- and parvalbumin-IR neurons were similar in size, shape, and manner of distribution in the visual cortex. However, two-color immunofluorescence revealed that no neurons in the hamster visual cortex expressed both nNOS and parvalbumin. The present results indicate that there are subtle species differences in the co-localization pattern between nNOS and calcium-binding proteins. The present results also suggest not only the heterogeneity and functional diversity of nNOS-IRneurons in the visual cortex, but also the importance of understanding animal diversity
Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) is known to regulate cell adhesion, migration, and mechanotransduction in focal adhesions (FAs). However, studies on how FAK activity is regulated in the plasma membrane microdomains according to the composition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins are still lacking. A genetically encoded fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based biosensor can provide useful information on the activity of intracellular signals with high spatiotemporal resolution. In this study, we analyzed the FAK activities in lipid raft (detergent-resistant membrane) and non-lipid raft (non-detergent-resistant membrane) microdomains using FRET-based membrane targeting FAK biosensors (FAK-Lyn and FAK-KRas biosensors) under four different ECM protein compositions: glass, type 1 collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. Interestingly, FAK activity in response to laminin in a lipid raft microdomain was lower than that in other ECM conditions. Cells subjected to fibronectin showed higher FAK activity in a lipid raft microdomain than that in a non-lipid raft microdomain. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the FAK activity can be distinctively regulated according to the ECM type and the environment of the plasma membrane microdomains.

In this paper, a new stroke extraction method of Chinese character base on the human optical field(the Receptive Field of Cell) is proposed. In processing the feature extraction of the chinese character, needed are more perfect extraction methods for separated informations and its data base. This method can be applied to processing neural cell using conventional feature extraction mechanism in the optical boundary of retina and cerebrum. With this method, its applicability and effectiveness were demonstrated extracting strokes from Chinese character.
Gap junctions are distributed within various cells and function as electrical synapses by freely exchanging small molecules. In the retina, the practical role of gap junctions in an animal's motion detection has not been investigated very much. In this study, optometer response (OMR) was used to Investigate the effects of drugs which modulate electrical synapses between retinal ceils. An Injection of carbenoxolone, 8-Br-cAMP, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or 8-Br-cGMP decreased goldfish's OMR in both light and dark conditions. In light conditions, an intravitreal injection of dopamine, SKF-38393 or eticlopride decreased OMR and that of SCH-23390 increased it. In dark conditions, the injections produced opposite results: dopamine, SKF-38393 and eticlopride increased OMR and SCH-23390 caused OMR to decrease. These results indicate that gap junctions between retinal cells have an Important role in goldfish's motion detection.
In this paper, a new micro polymer chip platform and protocol were developed for rare cell sample preparation. The proposed platform and protocol overcome the current limitation of the dilution method which is based on statistics and the FACS method which expensive and requires fluorescence staining. It allows collecting exact number of target cells simply and selectively because the cells are visually confirmed during the collecting process. The collected cells can be transported or spiked into a desired locations, such as a microchamber, without cell loss. This research may applicable not only to a rare cell sample preparation for Lab on a Chip cancer diagnosis, but also to a single/double/multiple cell sample preparation for a cell analysis field. To verify this platform and protocol, five human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) were collected and transported into a hemocytometer chamber.
In order to find out the distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY) recently known as the gonadotropin (GtH) stimulation neurohormone in the brain tissues of marine teleost, detection and localization of NPY like substance in brain of two rockfish species, Sebastes oblongus and S. schlekeli were done by immunohistochemisty. Distribution of GtH cells in hypophysis were also observed by aldehyde fuchsin (AF)-fast green-orange G stain to compare with gonadal phases of the rockfish species. NPY immunoreactive cells were detected in olfactory bulb, telencephalon and mesencephalon of the brain, and NPY immunoreactive fibers were distributed not only in olfactory bulb, telencephalon and mesencephalon but also in optic nerve, hypothalamus and optic tectum. Regardless of ovarian maturation in two rockfish species, NPY immunoreactive fibers were observed in the neurohypophysis adjacent to the AF negative cells in the rostral pars distalis of hypophysis in both species. Moreover, the fibers were distributed in the rostral and proximal pars distalis near to the GtH cells of the hypophysis in both species possessing the growing or mature oocytes. Slight AF stainable GtH cells were detected in hypophysis of two species before parturition (S. oblongus) and in mature stage (S. schlegeli), but AF stainability of the cells in the proximal pars distalis after parturition was more increased than that of the cells Tn mature stage or before parturition. The size and nucleus diameter of GtH cells in S. oblongus and S. schlegeli before parturition were significantly bigger than those of GtH cells in individuals after parturiton (S. oblongus) or with resting ovary (S. schlegeli) (P<0.01).

In this paper, we propose a new objective quality assessment method considering the human visual perception characteristics. A subjective quality assessment is obtained by the response of the receptive field in the primary visual cortex and a human's eye can't focus on all of the visual range in a moment. Take advantage of two facts above, we apply Gabor wavelet transform which is well fit the receptive field in the cortex, to divided constant sized subblocks. Then a local distortion of the subblocks and a global distortion for the entire image are calculated in order. The proposed method has been evaluated using video test sequences provided by the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG). The experimental results show that good correlation with human perception is obtained using the proposed metric, which is what we called GPSNR.
