This work presents a study on the design of an economic service robot hand for tele-presence manipulators. The conceptual design of new robot hand is derived from biomimetics approach. Guided by the analysis of human arm' musculoskeletal structure, the fingers are actuated by cables and actuators in the forearm. High tension in the cables is achieved by screw-nut mechanism driven by DC motors. A set of combination springs is incorporated in each of the screw-nut mechanism for easy control of gripping force. The first prototype revealed difficulties with finger control and coupling problem between gripping force and wrist movement. The solutions to these problems have been derived from the contradiction analysis of TRIZ. The second design has been verified by tests on various objects with different weight and shape for full range of wrist motion.

There exist many frame structural systems which may be regarded as a combined structural system composed of beam/bar elements and attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. In this paper, analytical methods based on the receptance for the vibration analysis of such a system are presented. For the free vibration analysis and response calculations to point excitations, receptances of a uniform Timoshenko beam and a bar are derived in closed and spectral forms, and the method to obtain the system receptance by synthesizing the receptances of the elements and other subsystems is presented. The system damping property is also obtainable by sysnthesizing the components' damping properties. For calculations of the system responses to support motion, the Support Displacement Transfer Ratio(SDTR) of a uniform Timoshenko beam and a bar conceptually similar to the receptance is defined, and the method of synthesizing them with other subsystems' receptances is also presented. Such a method is very convenient especially in dynamic reanalysis subject to changes of some design variables.
Many types of pipe whip restraints are installed to protect the structural components from the anticipated pipe whip phenomena of high energy lines in nuclear power plants. It is necessary to investigate these phenomena accurately in order to design the pipe whip restraints properly and/or to evaluate the acceptability of the pipe whip restraint design. Various research programs have been conducted in many countries to develop analytical methods and to verify the validity of the methods. In this study, various types of finite elements in ANSYS[1], the general purpose finite element computer program, was used to simulate the postulated pipe whips to obtain impact loads and the calculated results were compared with the specific experimental results from the sample pipe whip test for the U-shaped pipe whip restraints. Some calculational models, having the gap element or the spring element between the pipe whip restraint and the pipe line, give reasonably good transient responses of the restraint forces compared with the experimental results, and could be useful in evaluating the acceptability of the pipe whip restraint design.

The free span of a subsea pipeline due to seabed scouring can result in structural failure by severe ocean environmental loads and vortex induced vibrations. This Paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free spans under axial compressive load. The variation of allowable lengths of static and dynamic free spans is examined for generalized boundary conditions. The free span is modelled as a beam with an elastic foundations and the boundary condition is replaced by linear and rotational springs at each end. The static and dynamic free span curves are obtained with a function of non-dimensional parameters. A case study is carried out to introduce the application method of the curve. The results of this study can be usefully applied for the design of subsea pipelines with a free span.

During winter, the CWR (continuous welded rail) may be broken when a temperature drop below the neutral level changes the axial force, causing tensile fracture and creating a rail gap. The passage of a train on a rail with an open gap may lead to very costly derailments. In this paper, the use of a track-and-train-coupled model whose rail has an open gap is proposed for dynamic interaction analysis. Linear track and train systems were coupled in this study by a nonlinear Herzian contact spring, and the complete system matrices of the total track-train system were constructed. Moreover, the interaction phenomenon considering the presence of an open gap in the rail was toughly defined by assigning the irregularity functions between the two sides of the gap. Time history analysis, which has an iteration scheme such as the Newmark-$\beta$ method (based on the Modified Newton-Raphson methods), was conducted to solve the nonlinear equation. .Finally, numerical studies were conducted to assess the effect of the various parameters of the system when applied to various speeds, open-gap sizes, and support stiffnesses of the rail.
It is the common practice to over design the reinforcement for the secondary tunnel lining due to the lack of rational insight into the ground loosening loads. and due to the conservative application of the empirical design methods. The main loads of the secondary lining are the ground Loosening loads and the ground water pressure, and the ground load is critical in the reinforcement design of the secondary lining in the case of drained tunnel. If the external load is absent around a tunnel, the reasons of the load far secondary tunnel lining are the deterioration of the primary supports such as shotcrete, steel rib, and rockbolts. Accordingly, the analysis method considering the ground-primary supports-secondary lining interaction should be required tar the rational design of the secondary tunnel lining. In this paper, the interaction was conceptually described by the simple mass-spring model and the load transfer from the ground and primary supports to the secondary lining is showed by the ground-primary supports-secondary lining reaction curves fur the theoretical solution of a circular tunnel. And also, the application of this proposed model to numerical analysis is verified in order to check the potential far the tunnel with the complex analysis conditions.

This research introduces a new method to attenuate flip-over vibration generation in the flat blade windshield wiper by adjusting the contact pressure between the windshield glass and the blade. The knocking force in the flip-over action of the blade is decreased by inducing gradual tilting-over along the rubber strip of the blade. This gradual tilting-over is induced by introducing a non-uniform contact pressure distribution between the blade and windshield glass. The contact pressure distribution is adjusted by controlling the unloaded profile of the body spring in the blade using a procedure proposed in a previous study. Two blades, one blade designed to generate a uniform pressure distribution and the other designed to generate non-uniform pressure distribution, are developed using the procedure. Contact pressure distributions of the developed blades are measured using a special device and compared with the intended distributions confirming the similarities between the two groups. Vertical and lateral vibrations of the two blades are measured under realistic operating condition simulated by a wiper test rig. The vertical vibrations of the blade with non-uniform contact pressure are substantially smaller than corresponding vibrations of the blade with uniform contact pressure over the entire rubber strip.
The dynamic characteristics of the composite reflector panels are numerically and experimentally investigated. A dynamics model of the panel is analytically developed based on a deployment mechanism of the antenna. The deployment is passively activated using elastic energy of a spring with two rotational degrees of freedom. Using the flexible multi-body dynamic analysis ADAMS, dynamic behavior of the panels such as velocities, deformations, as well as reaction forces during the deployment, are investigated in the gravity and zero-gravity cases. The reflector panel is manufactured using carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) and its deployment characteristics are experimentally observed using a zero-gravity deployment test. The impact response and vibration problems that occur during deployment of the antenna panel have been identified and reliably deployed using dampers.
In this paper, the behavior of offshore wind turbine(OWT) foundation which is modeled by using existing design method and FEM is compared. When the same type of foundation is designed under the same sea and ground condition, the behavior characteristics with each model are compared. As a result, the member forces between apparent fixity and distributed spring type foundation which consider the ground stiffness are not different markedly, while fixed-base type foundation shows relatively lower member forces, which results in smaller safety margin. In other words, considering ground stiffness is reasonable because soil-pile interaction affects significantly on the analysis result. A case study with a monopile shows significant errors between p-y and FEM model at the head and tip of the pile. Also, it shows that the errors at the tip with diameter increase of the pile is larger. Thus, considering ground characteristics and engineering judgment are necessary in practice. A comparison of reliability analysis between tripod and monopile type foundation on the same condition shows larger probability of failure in monopile type and it indicates that the safety margin of monopile type can be lower.

This study mainly treats a new type of the bracing friction damper system, which is able to minimize structural damage under earthquake loads. The slotted bolt holes are placed on the shear faying surfaces with an intention to dissipate considerable amount of friction energy. The superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) wire strands are installed crossly between two plates for the purpose of enhancing recentering force that are able to reduce permanent deformation occurring at the friction damper system. The smart recentering friction damper system proposed in this study can be expected to reduce repair cost as compared to the conventional damper system because the proposed system mitigates the inter-story drift of the entire frame structure. The response mechanism of the proposed damper system is firstly investigated in this study, and then numerical analyses are performed on the component spring models calibrated to the experimental results. Based on the numerical analysis results, the seismic performance of the recentering friction damper system with respect to recentering capability and energy dissipation are investigated before suggesting optimal design methodology. Finally, nonlinear dynamic analyses are conducted by using the frame models designed with the proposed damper systems so as to verify superior performance to the existing damper systems.
