  • The simulation program which predicts the gas behavior in a spark ignition engine has been developed and verified by the comparison with the experimental results foy the MPI engine, naturally aspirated and turbochared engines with a carburettor. First paper describes the calculations of the behavior of gas in the intake and exhaust system. The generalized method of characteristics including friction, heat transfer, area change and entropy gradients was used to analyse the pipe flow The constant-Pressure model was applied for the analysis of the flow through engine valved, and the constant-pressure perfect-mixing model was applied for the flow at manifold junction. The concept of the sudden area change was used for the muffler and catalytic convertor. Fer the plenum chamber in an MPI engine, constant-pressure model and constant-volume model were both examined. Through the comparison of predicted results with experiments, the simulation program was verified by showing good prediction of the behavior of IC engine qualitatively and quantitatively under wide range of operating conditions.

흡기중 수증기 함량이 스파크 점화기관의 연소 및 노킹에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study of the Effects of Water Vapor in Intake Air on Comvustion and knock Characteristics in a Spark Ignition Engine)

  • In this study, the effects of water vapor in inlet air on combustion efficiency, general performance, knock characteristics and emission gas concentration were investig- ated through the experiments of combustion and vibration analyses, emission gas analysis by changing water vapor quantity in inlet air with temperature and humidity auto control unit. With partial vapor pressure increase, the brake torque at wide open throttle status decreased and the average ignition delay angle increased, IMEP (indicated mean effective pressured using the integral and 3rd derivatives of filtered cylinder pressure as knock intensity, which matched well with the method of frequency power spectrum of block vibration signal. Water vapor in intake air had influence on the spark knock sensitivity. With the increase of water vapor content in intake air NOx emission was decreased and HC emission was increased.

  • This paper presents the evaluation of combustion characteristics of sing-hole plasma jet ignitions in comparison with conventional spark ignition for variable of swirl velocity. Plasma jet plugs are three types according to ejecting directions : center of chamber, positive and negative swirl flow direction. Experiments are carried out for equivalent ratio 1.0 of LPG-air mixture in a constant volume cylindrical vessel. Not only the flame propagation is photographed at intervals, but the pressure variation in the combustion chamber is also recorded throughout the entire combustion process. The results show that the plasma jet ignitions and spark ignition enhance the overall combustion rate by increasing the swirl velocity. The dependence of the combustion rate swirl velocity leade to the conclusion that the placma jet plug, which ejects plasma jet to the cwnter of combustion chamber is the most desirable ignitor than other plugs.

  • Experimental study of variation of exhaust gas temperature was carried out with the changes of spark timing and exhaust valve timing during the cold start operation of an SI engine. To investigate the effects of these variables on combustion stability, cylinder pressure and exhaust gas temperature were measured and analyzed. Experimental results showed that exhaust gas temperature increased when spark and exhaust valve timings were retarded from the baseline cases. However, combustion stability during cold start deteriorated under the retarded conditions. To increase exhaust gas temperature for fast warmup of catalysts while maintaining combustion stability, an optimal condition for spark and valve timing retard should be appied for the cold start period.

  • 토치 점화 장치의 연소 특성을 파악하기 위하여 7개의 각기 다른 토치 점화 장치를 설계하였다. 토치 점화장치의 오리피스 직경에 따른 특성을 파악하기 위하여, 토치 점화 장치의 체적과 높이는 고정하고, 오리피스 직경을 4mm에서 16mm까지 2mm씩 증가시키며 실험하였다. 초기 화염 생성 및 전파는 질량 연소율과 연소 촉진율로 분석하였다. 질량 연소율과 연소 촉진율을 계산하기 위하여 정적 연소실 내의 평균 압력을 측정하였다. 또한 shadow graph법을 이용하여, 초기 화염 생성과 화염 전파과정 전 영역을 가시화하였다. 토치 점화 장치를 사용한 경우에는 일반적인 스파크 점화와 비교하여 질량 연소율의 기울기가 증가하였고, 연소 촉진율도 개선된것을 확인하였다. 또한 가시화된 이미지를 확인한 결과 토치 점화 장치를 사용하면 초기 화염 발달 단계에서 화염이 난류 화염으로 천이되어 연소가 촉진된것을 확인하였다.

  • 정상적인 불꽃 점화 시스템과 관통형 세라믹 콘덴서를 부가한 불꽃 점화 시스템에서 복사되는 전자파의 전력 스펙트럼의 측정 데이터를 분석한 결과 관통형 세라믹 콘덴서를 부가한 불꽃 점화 시스템에서 복사되는 전자파는 정상적인 불꽃 점화 시스템에서 복사되는 전자파 보다 약하고, 스펙트럼 밀도 또한 소하였다. 이것은 불꽃 점화 시스템에서 복사되는 불요 전자파를 관통형 세라믹 콘덴서가 감소시키는 것이라고 할 수 있으며, 고압의 펄스를 발생하는 점화 코일은 고주파를 발생하는 무선 주파 발진기라고 할 수 있다.

점화에너지 및 방전시간이 스파크 점화 기관의 성능에 미치는 영향 (A Study on the Effects of Ignition Energy and Discharge Duration on the Performances of Spark Ignited Engines)

  • An experimental investigation is proceeded to study on the relationship between spark ignition characteristics and the performances of an S. I. engine. The ignition parameters examined in this study are the ignition energy and discharging duration. The combustion pressure and exhaust gas are measured during the experiment. From the measured data of cylinder pressure, the heat release rate, the mass fraction burned, and the COV of IMEP are calculated. The dwell time and the injection time are varied. A single cylinder engine and a 30kW dynamometer are employed. Four different kinds of ignition systems are assembled, and one commercial ignition system is adopted. The experimental results show that the ignition energy is increased as the dwell time extended until the ignition energy is saturated. The higher ignition energy is effective in achieving the laster burning velocity and less producing HC emission. However, when the amount of ignition energy is similar, while the discharge duration becomes longer, the burning velocity is reduced but the engine operation becomes stable in terms of the COV of IMEP.

광섬유를 이용한 스파크점화 기관에서의 화염전파 검출기술 (Flame propagation detection using an optical fiber technique in a spark-ignition engine)

  • 연소실 내의 화염 전파를 검출하는 대표적인 방법으로 High Schlieren Cinematography방식, 광섬유를 이용하는 방법, 이온화 현상을 이용하는 것 등이 있다. 광섬유를 이용하는 방법은 연소실 벽면에 광섬유를 적절히 배치하고 광섬유에서 나오는 신호를 전기적 신호로 바꾸어 해석하는 것이다. 연소시 화염에서 방출되는 빛을 연소실 벽에 적절하게 배치되어 있는 광섬유를 통하여 포토 다이오드로 전송된다. 포토 다이오드는 빛에너지를 전기 신호로 바꾸고, 이 아날로그 신호는 증폭된다. 전압 비교기는 증폭된 신호를 디지탈화하고, 이 신호가 PC에 저장된다. 이 방법은 연소실 벽이나 피스톤 등을 투명화하기 위한 구조변경이나 재질변화로 인한 엔진특성변화를 피할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 광섬유를 이용하는 측정방법에 대해 연구하였다.

스파크 점화기관의 드웰각 변화에 의한 사이클 변동에 관한 연구 (A study of cycle-to-cycle variations with dwell angle in spark ignition engines)

  • The diagnostic used to observe the early flame development was a fiber optic spark plug, which enabled measurement of the flame front arrival times on a cycle-to-cycle basis. The data obtained with this fiber optic spark plug were analyzed to obtain two parameters to describe the behavior of the flame kernel : an expansion speed and a convection velocity. In addition, synchronized cylinder pressure data were taken to compare with the fiber optic spark plug data on a cyclic basis. Heat release analysis was performed on the cylinder pressure data to obtain the mass burning profile of the charge for each cycle. There was a significant correlation observed in the initial flame duration and the kernel expansion speed with dwell angle.

스파크점화 기관의 노킹측정에 관한 연구 (A study on spark-ignition engine knock measurements)

  • Spart-ignition engine knock is an abnormal combustion phenomenon originated from auto- ignition of a portion of or the entire end-gas during the later stage of combustion process. And engine knock is accompanied by a vibration of engine cylinder block and a high-pitched metallic noise. Engine knock is characterized in terms of its intensity, its occurrence crank angel and the percentage of engine knock cycles. To characterize engine knock, a precise measurements of cylinder pressure and a statistical analysis of cylinder pressure data are needed. The purpose of this study is to develope a technique to measure engine knock and its characteristics as a function of ignition timing change. A 4-cylinder spark-ignition engine and unleaded gasoline, whose octane number was 94, were used for experiments. To measure engine knock and to analyze engine knock characteristics, cylinder pressure data were sampled by a high speed data acquisition system which was developed in this study. Cylinder pressure data were sampled at each 0.1.deg. crank angle and the number of cycles continuously sampled was 80.
