  • For predicting the performances of the four stroke cycle spark ignition engines. the gas behavior in the engine system has been analyzed. The calculations consist of two parts. the calculation of the gas behavior in the intake and exhaust systems which was described in the first paper, and the calculation of the variations of gas properties inside the engine cylinders. In this Paper the simulations for the in-cylinder processes were described for the MPI engine, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines with a carburettor. With the combination of the calculations of the intake and exhaust systems and the calculation of the in-cylinder processes. the predictions of the engine Performances and the exhaust emission characteristics were carried out. And the result showed good agrements with the experimental results under wide range of operating conditions.

  • A model which calculates the hydrocarbon emissions from spark ignition engines is presented The model contains the formation of HC emissions due to both crevices around piston ring top land and oil films on the cylinder wall. The model also considers in-cylinder oxidation and exhaust port oxidation of desorbed HC from crevices and oil films after combustion process. The HC emissions model utilizes the results of SI engine cycle simulation. The model predicts well the trends of HC emissions from the engines when varying engine parameters.

  • CARS(Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy) temperature measurement under engine-like condition was validated by measuring unburned gas temperatures of premixed propane-air flame in a constant volume combustion chamber. The measured temperatures were compared with predictions of 2 zone flame propagation model. End-gas temperatures were measured were measured by CARS technique in a conventional 4 cylinder DOHC spark-ignition engine fueled with PRF 80. Cylinder pressure was measured simultaneously with CARS signal and used as a parameter on fitting CARS spectrum to library of theoretical spectra. There was a good agreement between the measured temperature and adiabatic core temperature calculated from measured cylinder pressure. Significant heating by pre-flame reaction in the gas was observed in the late part of compression stroke.

  • To analyse the cyclic variations in a test engine, the burn parameters are determined on a cycle-to-cycle basis through the analysis of the engine pressure data. Combustion analysis based on cylinder-pressure provides a mechanism through which a combustion researcher can understand the combustion process. The objective of this paper is to identify the most significant sources of cycle-to-cycle combustion variability in a spark ignition engine at idle. The burn rate analysis program was used and the burn parameters were used to determine the variations in the input parameter. In this study, the author investigated the relationship of indicated mean effective pressure, coefficient of variation of indicated mean effective pressure and burn angles, and lowest normalized value in a spark ignition engine for the cyclic variations.

  • 스파크 점화기관에서 화염전파과정에 관한 연구를 수행하기 위하여는, 초기화염핵 구간에서의 화염의 형성과 발달의 거동을 정확히 파악하여야 한다. 그러므로 화염핵의 형성과 발달에 영향을 미치는 최소 화염핵 크기의 이론적인 계산을 수행하였다. 이론식을 정립하기 위하여 열점화 이론을 이용하였다. 최소 화염핵 크기를 계산하기 위해 열전도 계수, 화염온도, 층류연소속도, 기타 열역학적 상태량 등을 계산하였다. 계산에 의존한 화염핵 크기의 신뢰성을 확인하기 위하여, 점화에너지를 변화시킬 수 있는 점화장치를 사용하여 실기 운전을 통하여 희박연소 한계가 그 때의 화염핵이 성정할 수 있는 영역이라고 가정하여 그 정확도를 확인 하였다.

Effect of Air-fuel Ratio on Combustion and Emission Characteristics in a Spark Ignition Engine Fueled with Bio-ethanol (공연비 변화가 바이오에탄올 연료 스파크 점화기관의 연소 및 배출물 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of air-fuel ratio on the combustion and emissions characteristics of spark ignition (SI) gasoline engine fueled with bio-ethanol. A 1.6L SI engine with 4 cylinders was tested on EC dynamometer. In addition, lambda sensor and lambda meter were connected with universal ECU to control the lambda value which is varied from 0.7 to 1.3. The engine performance and combustion characteristics of bio-ethanol fuel were compared to those obtained by pure gasoline. Furthermore, the exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), oxides of nitrogen ($NO_X$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) were measured by emission analyzers. The results showed that the brake torque and cylinder pressure of bio-ethanol fuel were slightly higher than those of gasoline fuel. Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of bio-ethanol was increased while brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) was decreased. The exhaust emissions of bio-ethanol fuel were lower than those of gasoline fuel under overall experimental conditions. However, the specific emission characteristics of the engine with bio-ethanol fuel were influenced by air-fuel ratio.

  • The simulation program which predicts the gas behavior in a spark ignition engine has been developed and verified by the comparison with the experimental results foy the MPI engine, naturally aspirated and turbochared engines with a carburettor. First paper describes the calculations of the behavior of gas in the intake and exhaust system. The generalized method of characteristics including friction, heat transfer, area change and entropy gradients was used to analyse the pipe flow The constant-Pressure model was applied for the analysis of the flow through engine valved, and the constant-pressure perfect-mixing model was applied for the flow at manifold junction. The concept of the sudden area change was used for the muffler and catalytic convertor. Fer the plenum chamber in an MPI engine, constant-pressure model and constant-volume model were both examined. Through the comparison of predicted results with experiments, the simulation program was verified by showing good prediction of the behavior of IC engine qualitatively and quantitatively under wide range of operating conditions.

  • Vehicle idle has become an increasing quality concern for automobile manufacturers because of its impact on customer satisfaction. As demand for better fuel economy increases, automobile manufacturers are continuously looking for any benefits from different driving conditions. Combustion variability in spark ignition engines was recognized that the stability of engine at idle is affected by the factors of fuel injection timing, ignition timing and air-fuel ratio. Therefore in this research, the results will be shown the effects of stability and the variations at idle according to fuel injection timing, ignition timing and air-fuel ratio as the basic parameters.

  • 전산유체 해법의 내연기관 3차원 해석에 대한 최근 연구 동향에 대해 소개하였다. 난류유동 해석은 아직 정확성과 신뢰도 면에서 많은 연구가 필요하지만 현재의 상태에서도 직관, 경험, 실험 측정에 의해 파악하기 어렵거나 많은 비용과 시간이 요구되는 부분을 보완해 줄 수 있는 도구로서 인정받고 있다. 연소해석 부분은 현상 자체가 유동, 연소, 분무, 열전달등이 복합적으로 작용하는 어려운 문제로서 공학계산의 가장 첨단 분야 중의 하나라 할 수 있다. 현재 관련 모델로서 스파크 점화기관의 점화 및 화염전파, 배기가스 생성 과정과 디젤기관의 압축착화, 예혼합 및 확산 연소, 매연 등의 생성과정에 대한 모델 개발과 검증이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 일부 발표된 논문 결과들은 이와 같은 방법이 엔진의 주요 연소 특성을 재현하는데에 성공적으로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

A Study on the Power Output and Exhaust Emission using the Fuel Vaporizing Device in Spark-Ignition Engine (기화혼합장치를 사용한 스파크 점화기관의 기관성능 및 배기성능에 관한 연구)

  • The effect of the three types of fuel vaporizing device on the engine torque and exhaust emission was investigated. Among the three types of fuel vaporizing device designed for the experiments, a 88mm long device with mesh around the inside pipe showed stable lean mixture combustion up to 21:1 air-fuel ratio and reduced the exhaustion of CO and HC. Compared with the general trend in the decrease of engine torque it was observed that the decrease of engine torque in this lean mixture combustion with the new device was small.
