  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the pull-out characteristics of screw anchor piles for use in braced excavation and cut-slope. A series of reduced-scale model tests were performed on model screw anchor piles with different geometric characteristics such as screw size and pitch length. The results indicated that the pullout resistance increases with decreasing the pitch length for a given screw size. It was also observed that the pullout capacity of a screw anchor pile increases with the screw size up to a certain size beyond which the increase becomes minimal. The results are presented in such a way that the pullout characteristics of screw piles with different screw geometric characteristics can be identified. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the pull-out capacity characteristics of screw anchor piles. Theoretical background of screw anchor pile (SAP) was first discussed. A series of reduced-scale model tests were performed on a number of cases with different SAP geometries such as pitch and diameter of screw as well as relative density of the model ground. The applicability of the pull-out capacity prediction equations were also examined based on the test results. It was shown that the pitch of screw has negligible effect on the pull-out capacity, while the diameter of screw has relatively large effect on pull-out capacity under a given condition. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • An electro-mechanical actuator (EMA) is an actuator that combines an electric motor with a mechanical power transmission elements, and it is suitable for urban air mobility (UAM) in terms of design freedom and maintenance. In this paper, the author presents the research results of the EMA that controls the rotor blade pitch angle of UAM. The actuator is based on an inverted roller screw and controls the blade pitch angle through a two-bar linkage. The dynamic equations for the actuator alone and the blade pitching motion with actuator were derived. For the latter, the equivalent moment of inertia is variable depending on the link angle due to the two-bar linkage. The variations of the equivalent moments of inertia are analyzed and compared in terms of the nut motion and the blade pitch motion. For an example model, the variation of the equivalent moment of inertia of the former is smaller than the latter, so it is judged that the dynamic equations derived from the point of view of the nut motion is suitable for the controller design.

  • The main purpose of this study is to get flowrate coefficient 'q' and to study characteristics of flowrate of screw pump. This study is based on Muskin's formula and depends on the computer simulation. The results of study are as follows. 1. Flowrate coefficient will reduce according to increase of inclination. The larger the pitch ratio is and the smaller the diameter ratio is, the more coefficient reduces. 2. As a rule, the coefficient increases according to reduction of the diameter ratio, but the coefficient tends to reduce when the ratio is less than 0.45. So, in actual application, it is recommended that the ratio should be above 0.45. 3. If the pitch ratio increases, the coefficient increases in case of small inclination and decreases in case of large inclination. 4. The coefficient increases according to number of windings. Especially, singles winding is not used in actual application because it has too small coefficient. 5. The coefficient decreases when the influent water level falls. Flowrate is almost zero when the water level is below $40\%$ of Filling Points.

  • This paper presents a precision automatic measuring system for ball screw Pitch. Ball screw is mounted on a precision indexing table, and the ball screw pitch is measured via magnetic scale, where the indexing and measurement are performed by a PC. For precision indexing of ball screw, direct driven motor is coupled to the designed dead and live centers; the performance of the centers are assessed with a precision master sylinder, such as radial motion, tilt motion, and axial motions. An error compensation model is constructed for the measurement system of ball screw pitch, where the error motions of indexing system as well as the scale measurement system are combined to give the measurement error for the ball screw. The developed system proposes an automated precision measurement system for manufacturers and users of ball screw.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the pullout characteristics of screw anchor pile using field pullout tests. A series of field pullout tests were performed on screw anchor piles with different geometric characteristics such as shaft and screw diameters. The results indicated that screw anchor piles exhibited significantly higher pullout capacities compared with the same diameter piles without screw. Also observed is that the set-up effect and the grouting significantly increase pullout capacities, although the magnitude of the increase depends on the ground condition. In addition the applicability of prediction methods for helical pile pullout capacity to screw anchor piles was also examined. The results are presented in such a way that the pullout characteristics of screw anchor piles with different installation conditions can be identified. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • In this paper, based on the concept of solid particles' hovering problem the working formula for the channel design of a Decanter-type centrifuge were derived. The Shields' diagram and its curve-fitting formula were used in determining the criterion of particle size for the sediment. By using these formula the designer can determine the sectional configuration of the channel, such as the liquid depth, the normal pitch of the screw-blade arrangement and the bowl diameter.

  • This paper presents an automated cow-feeding system based on an AGV and screw conveyor for domestic livestock farms, which are becoming larger and more commercialized. The system includes a hopper module for loading pellet-type mixed feed at the top of the system, a transfer module mounted with a screw conveyor to transfer feed from the hopper module to the outlet module, an outlet module composed of belt conveyors, and an electromagnetic guided driving-type AGV. The weight of the loaded feed is measured by a load cell located under the transfer module. The system reads the feed discharge information stored in RFID tags installed in each cowshed cell, and a predetermined amount of feed is discharged while the AGV is moving. A cow-feed test system was constructed to determine the design parameters of the screw conveyor in the transfer module that determine the feeding capacity. These parameters include the screw's outer diameter, the screw shaft outer diameter, and screw pitch. The parameters were applied to the finalized cow-feed system construction. A DSP-based main controller and cow-feeding algorithm for different scenarios were also developed to control the system. Experimental results confirmed that the system could supply a total of 21 kg of feed uniformly at 420 g/s for a cowshed cell which has 7 cows. The driving distance was 5 m and the speed was 0.1 m/s. Thus, the proposed system could be applied to standardized domestic livestock farms.

  • The residence time distributions were measured experimentally to determine the effect of reverse screw elements at various screw configurations in twin screw extruder. A simple model was used to estimate the number of filled C-chamber on the forwarding screw. The inclusion of reverse-screw elements resulted in the increase of median residence time and the broadening of color distribution. True residence time was affected by using the reverse screw elements just before the die. The number of filled C-chamber was decreased with the increase of screw revolution speed at the same screw configuration.

  • This study reports the combustion characteristics, such as burner temperature and the concentration of exhausted gas ($O_2$, $CO_x$, $NO_x$) due to the different types and pitches of the fuel supply feeder of the wood pellet boiler. The 1st grade wood pellets composed of mainly larch have been used for the experiment. In case of using the spring feeder, mean temperature of burner was approximately $821.76^{\circ}C$, and the mean concentration of oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide were approximately 8.88%, 93.35ppm, 12.15% and 139.83 ppm, respectively. The test result with the spring feeder was shown to approach the condition of complete combustion compared to that of a screw feeder and were in good agreement with authentication judgement standard. Furthermore, the combustion efficiency was improved according to the growth of screw pitch. The control of air flow rate from the blower and ventilator is needed to achieve the complete combustion.
