  • In this study the regression rate of hybrid rocket fuel has been investigated by two methods. First method is to use swirl injectors for enhancement of regression rate. And second method is the modification of the helical grain deriving improvement of combustion area and generating swirl flow. Tests have been done with PMMA and gaseous oxygen. In this paper the incline angle of the helical grain was varied to find the optimal condition to obtain the max regression rate for a given operational condition.

  • In the present, The theoretical and numerical results of gas flow characteristics inside a swirl injector are presented. For this purpose a one-dimensional (theoretical) model and 2D/3D CFD models are proposed for use in the design of the injector. It was found that contradictory to the classical theory about the compressible flow, the swirl has a significant effect on the mass flow rate and the choking conditions. It was found that the one-dimensional model provides reasonably accurate results compared with the 2D/3D numerical results, and thus can be used at the initial stage of the swirl-injector design process.

  • The spray and atomization characteristics of swirl coaxial injectors which use gas methane and LOx as propellants are investigated experimentally with a recess length variation. Mass distribution and spray angle are measured by a patternator and droplet size to find atomization characteristics are measured by GSV(Global Size and Velocity) system. As a result, when the liquid sprayed, the spray angle decreased and the atomization characteristic was improved with the recess length increase. When the gas and liquid injected simultaneously, the spray angle was decreased and the atomization characteristic was improved comparing to only the liquid injection.

  • The addition of swirl is a common technique used in premixed combustors in order to gain stability of the combustion with the improvements in mixing characteristics. recent experimental studies have observed that the addition of swirl oxidizer flow can effectively reduce the combustion instability in hybrid rocket. Investigation was continued to analyze the effect of the swirl on the internal flow of hybrid rocket engine main combustion chamber. The flow influenced by wall blowing as a representation of fuel evaporation interacts with swirling flow. Swirl angle increases, the amplitude of the combustion pressure decrease as the unstable combustion processes. These results suggest that the oxidizer swirling flow by the swirl angle causes the change of the turbulent flow characteristics inside the combustion chamber and suppresses the factors causing the combustion instability.

  • This research is carried out for the performance evaluation of the injector that is one of the critical components of bipropellant-rocket-engine. Spray characteristics are investigated in detail according to the recess length and injection pressure on the swirl-coaxial-injector using gaseous methane and liquid oxygen as propellants. A visualization is conducted by the Schlieren photography that is composed of a light source, concave mirrors, knife, and high-speed-camera. A hollow-cone-shape is identified in the liquid spray that is spread only by inner injector and the spray angle is decreased due to the diminution of swirl strength in accordance with the increase of the length of injector orifice. When the injector sprays the liquid through the inner injector with the aid of gas through the outer injector, the spray angle in external mixing region tends to increase with rise of the recess length, while in internal mixing region, it is decreased. It is also confirmed that the same tendency of the spray angle with recess length appears irrespective of the injection pressure of liquid spray.

  • The aim of this study is to suppress the high-frequency combustion instability by acoustic absorption through swirl injector with variable air core length. In the previous study, acoustic damping effects on air core (length, shape, volume) and location of the injector in a model chamber were investigated. Through previous results, our study has advanced to the effect of tuned multi-injectors. From the experimental data, it is proved that increasing of numbers of injectors mounted each anti-node point can increase acoustic damping effect. Also, when tuned injectors at 1L, 1T, 1L1T modes simultaneously are installed each anti-node point of model chamber, damping effect of tuned injectors with multi modes is well agreed with it of tuned injectors with single mode.

  • In hybrid rocket combustion, the oxidizer swirl injection is frequently used to stabilize the combustion as the rotational velocity component affects the boundary layer flow. However, as the swirl strength increases, a problem arises where the combustion performance changes too much. Thus, this study attempts to control the low frequency instability while minimizing the change in combustion performance by adapting attenuated swirl injection with fuel insert used in reference [7]. To this end, a series of experimental tests were performed by varying swirl intensity and the location of the fuel insert. In the tests, the occurrence of combustion instability and combustion performance were closely monitored. The results confirmed that combustion instability was successfully suppressed at the condition of the swirl angle 6 degree and the location of fuel insert 310 mm. And, the changes in combustion pressure, O/F ratio, and fuel regression rate were found as minimal compared to the baseline case. Also the results reconfirmed that the formation of positive coupling between two high frequency oscillations in 500 Hz band, combustion pressure(p') and heat release oscillation(q'), is the necessary and sufficient condition of the occurrence of low frequency instability.

  • To investigate the possibility of using artificial means for the control of shear layers in swirl jets, a shear excitation device is introduced. The device consists of co-centric dual nozzles with internal lobes (i.e., convex surfaces) of small height to induce disturbance. The number of convexities can be varied to produce the various modes in azimuthal direction. The acquired velocity data of the swirling jets, with and without the lobes, are numerically simulated in 2-D contour plots and 3-D particle trace plots. The results are compared with the baseline (i.e., no excitation case) at various excitation modes. Conclusively it is observed that the artificial excitation method is effective in the control of the vortical structure in swirling jets.
