  • Wireless LAN (WLAN) interface is one of the major sources drastically depleting the battery power of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Most commercial mobile devices employ a power saving technique putting their WLAN interface into a sleep state when there is no network traffic, and thereby, save the battery power. However, since an access point (AP) just transmits the packet(s) received from a server to the corresponding mobile device immediately, it may cause a problem that the mobile device constantly remains in an awake state so that its battery power is rapidly drained. In this paper, we point out this problem and propose a new scheme that can save the mobile device's battery power with an adaptive packet scheduling at the AP side. From the experimental results based on a testbed, we found that the proposed scheme outperforms existing schemes over 50% in terms of power saving.

  • Recently, SDN is actively used as datacenter networks and gradually increase its applied areas. Along with this change of networking environment, research of deploying network security systems on SDN becomes highlighted. Especially, systems for detecting network flooding attacks by monitoring every packets through ports of OpenFlow switches have been proposed. However, because of the centralized management of a SDN controller which manage multiple switches, it may be substantial overhead that the attack detection system continuously monitors all the flows. In this paper, a sampling based network flooding attack detection and prevention system is proposed to reduce the overhead of monitoring packets and to achieve reasonable functionality of attack detection and prevention. The proposed system periodically takes sample packets of network flows with the given sampling conditions, analyzes the sampled packets to detect network flooding attacks, and block the attack flows actively by managing the flow entries in OpenFlow switches. As network traffic sampler, sFlow agent is used, and snort, an opensource IDS, is used to detect network flooding attack from the sampled packets. For active prevention of the detected attacks, an OpenDaylight application is developed and applied. The proposed system is evaluated on the local testbed composed with multiple OVSes (Open Virtual Switch), and the performance and overhead of the proposed system under various sampling condition is analyzed.

  • In this paper, I propose an adaptive OFDM CP length algorithm for in PLC systems for smart grid. The proposed scheme calculates the channel delay information at the CP controller of the receiver by taking correlation between a received data frame and the following delayed one. The CP controller, immediately, feeds back the channel delay information to the transmitter. Then, the transmitter adapts CP length for next data frame. As an impulsive noise model, Middleton Class A interference model was employed. The performance is evaluated in terms of packet data rate, cumulative packet data rate, and bit error rate (BER). The simulation results showed data gain (which is the amount of the reduced bits) gets larger as the number of packets increase, but the amount of data gain reduced as the number of branches ($N_{br}$) increase. In respects of BER for the cases $N_{br}$ is 3, 4, and 5, performance of the adaptive CP length algorithm and the fixed CP scheme are similar. Therefore, it is confirmed the proposed scheme achieved data rate increment without BER performance reduction compared to the conventional fixed CP length scheme.

  • The existing smart grid device authentication system is concentrated on DCU, meter reading FEP and MDMS, and the authentication system for smart meters is not established. Although some cryptographic chips have been developed at present, it is difficult to complete the PKI authentication scheme because it is at the low level of simple encryption. Unlike existing power grids, smart grids are based on open two-way communication, increasing the risk of accidents as information security vulnerabilities increase. However, PKI is difficult to apply to smart meters, and there is a possibility of accidents such as system shutdown by sending manipulated packets and sending false information to the operating system. Issuing an existing PKI certificate to smart meters with high hardware constraints makes authentication and certificate renewal difficult, so an ultra-lightweight password authentication protocol that can operate even on the poor performance of smart meters (such as non-IP networks, processors, memory, and storage space) was designed and implemented. As a result of the experiment, lightweight cryptographic authentication protocol was able to be executed quickly in the Cortex-M3 environment, and it is expected that it will help to prepare a more secure authentication system in the smart grid industry.

  • This paper proposes an Energy Theft Traceback Protocol(ETTP) based on Logging and Marking that can trace Energy Theft back in Smart Grid Environment. The ETTP consists of the following three phases. First, it classifies Energy Theft Type into Measurement Rejection and Data Fabrication by generating an Energy Theft Tree. Second, it detects an Energy Theft by using the Energy Theft Tree. Finally, it trace an Energy Theft back by using the Logging Table of a Router and the Marking Information of a Packet. The result of its simulation shows that the Detection Ratio of Energy Theft is estimated at 92% and the Success Ratio of Energy Theft Traceback at 93%. Therefore, the ETTP not only reduces such risk factors as Forgery and Tampering about Billing information but also provides safe and reliable Smart Grid environment.

  • Smartphones have become commonplace to use smart, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) spread the trend of domestic WLAN use is intensifying as a result, the security threat will be greatly increased. Even though WLAN vendors such as Cisco Systems Inc,. Aruba networks released WIPS, MDM, DLP etc, however, these solutions can not be easily introduced for small business due to high cost or administrative reasons. In this paper, without the introduction of expensive H/W equipment, in WLAN environments, packet analysis, AP, Station management, security vulnerabilities can be analyzed by the proposed intrusion detection system.

  • In this paper, we proposed the location-aware coordinate routing algorithm for improving the performance of routing algorithm by using ZigBee in Smart Grid environment. A distributed address allocation scheme used an existing algorithm that has wasted in address space. The x, y and z coordinate axes from divided address space of 16 bit to solve this problems. However, coordinate routing does not take account of wireless link condition. If wiress link condition is not considered, when the routing table is updated, the nodes with bad link conditions are updated in the routing table and can be chosen as the next hop. This brings out the retransmissions because of received packet's errors. Also, because of these retransmissions, additional power is consumed. In this paper, we propose the location-aware coordinate routing algorithm considering wiress link condition, where reliable data transmission is made and the consumed enegy is minimize. and we compared and connected region and transition region of ZigBee location based routing in the aspect of average number of multi hops, subordinate packet delivery ratio, delay time, and energy consumption of proposed algorithm. It turned out that there were improvements in performances of each items.

  • In this paper, we show a scheme to directly access DLNA network with the 3G/4G communication module of a smartphone in home or office environment. By exploiting this scheme, end users can use DLNA service more conveniently regardless of the type of activated communication module in a smartphone. For the implementation of this scheme, we use a femtocell that is a basestation with small coverage. A problem caused by the IP address hierarch discrepancy between the IP address of 3G/4G module of smartphone and those of local network nodes is resolved by deploying local IP address scheme. The processing of multicasting packet, that is required in DLNA service, is enabled by using IP tunneling scheme. As a result, end user can access DLNA network regardless of the type of activated wireless communication module. We validate the design result by implementing it on a commercial WCDMA femtocell.
