Data-Driven Approach to Identify Research Topics for Science and Technology Diplomacy (과학외교를 위한 데이터기반의 연구주제선정 방법)

  • In science and technology diplomacy, major countries actively utilize their capabilities in science and technology for public diplomacy, especially for promoting diplomatic relations with politically sensitive regions and countries. Recently, with an increase in the influence of science and technology on national development, interest in science and technology diplomacy has increased. So far, science and technology diplomacy has relied on experts to find research topics that are of common interest to both the countries. However, this method has various problems such as the bias arising from the subjective judgment of experts, the attribution of the halo effect to famous researchers, and the use of different criteria for different experts. This paper presents an objective data-based approach to identify and recommend research topics to support science and technology diplomacy without relying on the expert-based approach. The proposed approach is based on big data analysis that uses deep-learning techniques and bibliometric methods. The Scopus database is used to find proper topics for collaborative research between two countries. This approach has been used to support science and technology diplomacy between Korea and Hungary and has raised expectations of policy makers. This paper finally discusses aspects that should be focused on to improve the system in the future.

The Development and Validation of the Survey of Students' Affective Characteristics in the Non-Cognitive Domain of Mathematics Learning (수학학습 정의적 영역 검사 도구 개발 연구)

  • Fostering students' positive affect related to mathematics such as attitudes toward mathematics and dispositions toward learning mathematical concepts is one of the major goals of school mathematics programs. In this study, we collected data from students at the 4-1 grade levels to develop an instrument that measures students' affect regarding mathematics learning. To develop the instrument, we first conducted focus group interviews, which we recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. We sorted the results according to seven components of the non-cognitive domain of mathematics learning, which drew from taxonomical constructs of previous research. We then conducted a pilot study in which we administered the instrument as a pretest and a posttest. We chose the final items based on confirmatory factor analysis and a reliability test of the pre and posttest scores. The final instrument contains 24 items, which are classified according to the seven components: interest, attitudes, value, external motivation, internal motivation, learning conation, and efficacy. We anticipate this instrument will be useful for studies that need to measure students' non-cognitive characteristics in relation to learning mathematics.

A Study on the Transnational Identity of Diaspora and Diversity (디아스포라의 초국적 정체성과 다양성에 관한 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the appearance of the global generation transnational identity and forming process, existence aspect, functional role, and on the actuating mechanism, and etc. The results about the transnational identity of Diaspora and diversity are as follows. First, as to the transnational identity, the emigrants had been being determined by the relation with the accreditation and how type had been deal with one's decision about the self-identify. Second, the individual experience of the emigrant, interaction, and unstable status political support etc. various factors were combined and the diversity of the Diaspora identity showed. Third, the identity concept had been performing the function in the more expanded meaning called the nation and nation through the continuous meaning expansion than the individual as the national ideology. Fourth, the transnational identity of Korean-Chinese was specialized into the nation identity, double identity, and 'the identity of the third' etc. Fifth, the transnational identity of the Nikkei-Brazilian appeared for Japanese identity, Brazilian identity, and Nikkeijin identity etc. in Japan. In conclusion, the Transnational identity of the Diaspora is reproducing the identity of the emigrant, it suggests through the differentiation in the settlement and exclusion.

The Development and Validation Study of the Work-Life Balance Organizational Culture Scale (일과 삶의 균형 조직문화 척도 개발 및 타당화 연구)

  • The purposes of this study were to develop work-life balance supportive organizational culture scale(WLB supportive organizational culture) and to verify it's validity. We reviewed comprehensive studies about work-life balance and organizational culture as well as scales related to them. We theoretically extracted some important factors of WLB organizational culture from reviews and then made 38 preliminary questions. 773 married workers in their 30s to 50s were responded to a questionnaire consisted of 38 preliminary questions and 9 variables(work-life balance, quality of life, job satisfaction, turnover etc) for criterion related validity verification. As the results of factor analysis such as EFA and CFA, we could confirm five factors including WLB organizational management, WLB supportive supervisors, empathetic communication with coworkers, coworkers' material support to WLB and accessibility to WLB programs. Second, correlation analyses were performed to investigate the validation of this scale. In result, it was revealed that the WLB supportive organizational culture scale was highly correlated with other family supportive organizational culture measures as well as dependent variables such as work-life balance, quality of life, job satisfaction, turnover. We expect this study contribute to improve the quality of studies about work-life balance and organizational culture.

Korean Teachers' Conceptions of Models and Modeling in Science and Science Teaching (과학 탐구와 과학 교수학습에서의 모델과 모델링에 대한 교사들의 인식)

  • Science inquiry has long been emphasized in Korean science education. Scientific modeling is one of key practices in science inquiry with a potential to provide students with opportunities to develop their own explanations and knowledge thereafter. The purpose of this study is to investigate teacher's understanding of models in science and science teaching. A professional development program on Models (PDM) was developed and refined through three times of implementation while teachers' conceptions of models and modeling were examined. A total of 29 elementary and secondary teachers participated in this study. A survey based on model use of scientists in the history of science was developed and used to collect data and audio recordings of discussions among teachers and artifacts produced by the teachers during PDM were also collected. Three ways of ontological and two ways of epistemological understanding of models and modeling were found in teachers' ideas. After PDM, a quarter of the teachers changed their ontological understanding whereas very few changed their epistemological understanding. In contrast, more than two thirds of the teachers deepened and extended their ideas about using models and modeling in teaching. There were no clear relationships between teachers' understanding of models and ways and ideas about using models in science teaching. However, teachers' perceptions of school conditions were found to mediate their intention to use models in science teaching. The findings indicate possible approaches to professional development program content design and further research.

The experience of nursing students' exploring historic sites of independence movement overseas (간호대학생의 국외독립운동사적지 탐방 경험)

  • This is a qualitative study conducted to understand and explain the experience of nursing students' exploring historic sites of independence movement overseas. The study's participants were 24 nursing students in the first and second graders who participated in a program to explore the historic sites of independence movement overseas at a college in C County, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The data collection period was from December 23, 2017 to December 25, 2017. The data collection was carried out in an open self-reporting process, and the collected data were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method of Krippendorff[13]. Based on the analysis of the experience of nursing students' exploring historic sites of independence movement overseas 19 sub-theme, 10 themes, and 4 categories were derived. The four categories are "Our History Represented in the wake of the independence movement", "Footprint projected of an independent activist ", " Rage Boiling But Hope Remaining", "blooming patriotism through reflection". The results of this study provided an understanding of nursing students' experience in exploring the historical sites of independence movement and have shown that nursing students had the opportunity to recognize the history of independence movements, inspire patriotism and reflect on their attitude as nurses. In addition, institutional efforts and resources should be supported to address the lack of policies on the preservation of the historic sites for independence movements overseas, which are dependent on the private sector.

An Analysis of Perceptions by Road Construction Engineers on ICEC Framework at the time of System Transition, from Responsibility Supervision to Construction Management (II) - Focused on CM Terminology & ICEC Coordination - (책임감리가 건설사업관리(CM)로 전환시 도입된 역량지수(ICEC)에 대한 도로건설기술자들의 인식 분석(II) - CM 용어와 ICEC 조정을 중심으로 -)

  • This study (II) aims to draw up the future-oriented construction policy recommendations based on the outcomes as a result of a broad research and conducting questionnaire surveys on the arguable issues raised by construction engineers for roads and bridges in the course of previous study (I) implementation. As for the question of "The term 'Construction Management (CM)' which currently is defined in two (2) ways", 45% of respondents have answered that two (2) different types of CM should be unified into one (1) CM type as is the case in most advanced countries. About the question of "The ways to educate the CM professionals", many respondents have preferred to acquire CM professional certificate after receiving education for a certain period of time from private CM training institutions. As for the question of The revised draft that the ICEC grade of special engineers for design, construction and quality control areas shall be "more than 78 points from a more than 75 points by the original draft." 52% of respondents preferred to maintain the original draft. About the question of "The reason why the CM system has not been working well yet." 62% of respondents have answered that the staff members who are in charge of handling public project procurements are concerned about the fact that their roles (or activities) might be deprived as a result of CM adoption. In order for the CM system to be activated, based on the notion that the construction projects must be out soured, the reshuffle of the headquarter organization of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (MLIT) should be preceded.

Ex Ante Evaluation Methodology for IT Investment Decision Making: Integrating the Current Best Practice Methods and Applications (정보화 투자 사전평가방법론: Best practice 평가기법 및 적용사례의 통합)

  • This research is to offer a structured yet practical ex-ante evaluation methodology for IT investment. Benchmarking the best practices of four Korean organizations, we try to integrate core processes, relevant measures, and evaluation dimensions into a consistent and wholesome body of evaluating methodology. The best practices we considered encompass a wide range of business enterprises, including for-profit, non-profit, service-oriented, and manufacturing entities. The proposed methodology consists of three stages; the first stage checks the validity of investments by looking into comprehensiveness of planning, willingness to accomplish, justifiable grounds for the investments, overlapping investments, and obstructing risks; the second do so by putting an IT investment into economic, strategic, and technological perspectives; and the last third would produce a unified quantity that summarizes outcome of the previous stages. Incorporating the proven knowledge, guidelines, and quantifying tools, the methodology could make a valuable reference model for IT evaluation practitioners who have been bedeviled by having to going through such ex-ante evaluations.

Exploration of Experienced Science Teachers' Perception on Teaching the Gifted in Science (영재 교육 현장경험을 통해 얻은 과학 교사들의 효과적 영재 교수방법에 대한 인식 탐색)

  • The purpose of study was to explore science teachers' practical knowledge on teaching the gifted in science; namely, what kinds of instructional methods did they perceive as effective approaches based on their teaching experience with the gifted? Twelve science teachers who had 4-11 years of teaching experiences with the gifted students at the gifted center under the local educational offices participated in the study. The data source included in-depth individual interviews with the teachers. In results, the teachers became more aware of the academic potentials and characteristics of the students and had made efforts to develop their instructional methods more fitting to the characteristics and needs of the gifted. They emphasized four instructional aspects: 1) experience of authentic inquiry process and methods, 2) group activities focusing on leadership, communication and collaboration, and empathetic attitudes, 3) tasks promoting creative and convergent thinking, and 4) career awareness in the field of science, technology, and engineering. It is expected that this study provides more practical implications and insights for novice science teachers in the gifted education.

Foot/Ankle Roll-Over Characteristics According to Different Heel Heights of Shoe during Walking (보행 시 신발 굴 높이어 따른 발/발목 복합체의 Roll-Over특성)

  • This study investigated the effects on foot and ankle roll-over characteristics according to different heel heights during walking. Fifteen female volunteers who have neither musculoskeletal nor foot problems were participated in gait analyses, wearing four different pairs of shoes in different heel heights. To obtain roll-over shape of foot/ankle complex, we used trajectories of knee and ankle joints as well as the renter of pressure between initial contact and opposite initial contact. Results revealed that the entire roll-over shape moved distally as the heel height increased but roll-over characteristics showed uniformly with different heel heights. In addition, we found that nondisablea persons automatically adapted to their foot/ankle complex to varying heel heights within 6cm, by moving the origin of roll-over shape distally to maintain roll-over characteristics. However, since the balance of the gait only by the ankle joint could not be achieved beyond the heel height of 6cm, compensations at the knee and the hip joints occurred simultaneously. Roll-over characteristics in human walking would provide simpler and wider understanding of human walking, and furthermore could be applied to the wide understanding of prosthetics and orthotics of the lower extremity as well as orthopaedic shoes.
