The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of communication - oriented mathematical writing strategies on students' mathematics achievement and mathematical propensity. In order to achieve the purpose, three types of communicative math writing learning strategies such as writing their own thoughts and feelings, writing problem solving process, and explaining the mathematical concepts. In the comparative group, general lessons based on textbooks and tutorials were conducted. As the results, the students in the experimental group showed a significant improvement in mathematics achievement and a positive effect on the mathematical propensity as compared with the comparison group.

In this paper, we study the effects on mathematical communication and disposition for the writing mathematics letters in secondary mathematics education. For this purpose we construct a experimental class and then analyse the students' change in those aspects after applying writing mathematics letters made some significant changes on the students communication in mathematics and disposition. First. the results for this purpose on regarding the enhancement of mathematical communication are effective. Second, the results on regarding the improvement of disposition are effective.

본 연구에서는 수학일지 쓰기가 중학생의 수학적 태도에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해서 연구 대상 반을 선정하여 수학적 태도에 관한 설문 조사를 실시하고 고안된 수학 일지를 쓰도록 한 후 수학 성적이 상 및 하에 속하는 각 3명을 대상으로 두 차례 실시한 인터뷰 자료와 인터뷰 당시 연구자가 느낀 점을 적은 메모를 바탕으로 학생들의 수학일지 쓰기에 대한 인식을 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구에 따르면 수학일지 쓰기는 학생들의 수학적 태도, 수학 학습에 긍정적인 영향을 주었고 교사-학생간의 관계와 교사에게 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 후속 연구에서는 충분한 사전 조사로 일지 쓰기의 횟수와 시간을 잘 결정하고 연구 기간을 충분히 잡아 학생들의 변화를 지속적으로 관찰하며 평가와의 연계로 학생들의 적극적인 참여를 유도할 필요가 있다고 본다.

This study is aimed at analyzing the level change and features of mathematical communication in elementary students' expository writing. 20 students of 5th graders of elementary school in Seoul were given expository writing activity for 14 lessons and their worksheets was analyzed through four categories; the accuracy of the mathematical language, logicality of process and results, specificity of content, achieving the reader-oriented. This study reached the following results. First, The level of expository writing about concepts and principles was gradually improved. But the level of expository writing about problem solving process is not same. Middle class level was lower than early class, and showed a high variation in end class again. Second, features of mathematical communication in expository writing were solidity of knowledge through a mathematical language, elaboration of logic based on the writing, value of the thinking process to reach a result, the clarification of the content to deliver himself and the reader. Therefore, this study has obtained the conclusion that expository writing is worth keeping the students' thinking process and can improve the mathematical communication skills.

This study is to help to understand the influence of exchange writing activity in the elementary mathematics on students' mathematical communication skill. Various technical activities had been implemented during the classes and the ideas from those activities had been interpreted into writings in the final stage of the classes. Those writings, then, were distributed to other students or teachers in order to devise a teaching model for exchange writing, which is to be applied to the 3rd grade classes and to identify the influence on the in mathematical communication skill. From this study, we could get such conclusions as follows: First, there was considerable difference between experimental group practicing exchange writing and control group engaging in normal learning activities in the progress of their mathematical communication skill (group discussion), writing skill and expressivity when examining their average communication skill using t-method. Similar trend had been witnessed when self-evaluating their mathematical communication skill. Second, when it comes to the mathematical tendency, experimental group showed a higher tendency in positiveness compared to the control group. Therefore, we might conclude that the exchange writing has a positive influence on the students' mathematical tendency, especially on their curiosity or interest in teaming, willingness to study and their comprehension of its importance.

Elementary mathematics education in the 7th mathematics curricula has been emphasized to foster ‘mathematical power’. For establishing this purpose, we need to provide the opportunities inducing to students' thoughts and to study leaching-learning methods to make structuring for their thinking process. Using to writing activities in students' mathematics learning, we think that we can find out their thinking process and this writing mathematics learning method is effective to promote their communication. Through analysing to six grade mathematics textbooks, we devised to mathematical writing types and teaching/learning models could being utilized in mathematics classes. And we investigated the influence of mathematical writing on the learning ability of students. We have experimented and investigated to after dividing experimental objects into two groups, experimental group and comparative group. We founded out, through these researches for mathematical writing teaming, that the experimental group of the former had obtained greatly better results than the latter in mathematical learning abilities and studying achievements. Based on these result, it is required to have an accumulation of research on teaching-teaming methods by using various types of mathematical writing study.

I took a look at the note written by the students in math class. But, it was sort of a 'scratch paper' because they focused only on the problems or do not know the writing a notebook. Thus, I prepared organizational writing activity through learning-notebooks and analyzed the results from the writing activity through learning-notebooks in order to recognize the effects how the activity influences students' mathematics academic achievements and attitude. As a result, I could find that writing activity through learning-notebooks contributes to the enhancement of mathematics academic achievement and attitude.

As the value and importance of mathematical communication was recognized, mathematical communication in mathematics education has been strengthened more and more. Written communication as well as verbal communication is emphasized. On the other hand, storytelling is introduced for elementary students to learn mathematical concept more naturally and easily in the 2009 revised curriculum. So, we noticed that they are familiar with story. In this study, we analyze the story writing activity levels with a focus on story writing, and how to think about it. And we offer some suggestions about mathematical story writing activity.

One of the essential factors for successful college mathematics class is to provide a strong motivation for learning to students. In this respect, this paper attempted to find out how the letter-writing assignment can change students' learning attitude and enhance their motivation for further mathematical investigation. The process is to have all students write up letters containing a summary of the major points covered during the semester, and to find out how valuable is the letter-writing assignment. The major finding of this research is that the letter-writing assignment makes a notable contribution to the desirable change of students' learning attitude. From this finding, we suggest that the letter-writing assignment be adopted by more math classes and expect that such expansion of the letter-writing assignment would have a positive influence on the students' learning attitude.

The purposes of this study were to explore in depth about 5th graders' mathematical speaking and writing abilities and to investigate differences on those abilities. The study involved three-5th graders and their speaking and writing abilities in geometry area were analyzed. According to the results of the study. the children had difficulties in selecting and using appropriate mathematical languages to explain mathematical concepts, mathematical ideas, and problem solving steps. The children who participated in the study showed higher ability in speaking than writing.
