  • In this study, we have accomplished content area reading activities for pre-service teachers since 2003. These activities were guided each year to students of the college of education. We proceeded our content area reading activities by four courses. Four courses consisted of reading the book, discussion of reading, announcement of the results, reminding announcement. After content area reading activities, the pre-service teachers have learned naturally the knowledge and ideas that will help in teaching mathematics. And they have shared and expand their knowledge and ideas with colleagues. Moreover the pre-service teachers came to realize that content area reading is very important in pre-service mathematics teacher education. In the study, it was suggested that there is a need to provide opportunities to experience the content area reading for pre-service teachers in mathematics teacher education.

  • Nowadays the researches on the reading materials about Mathematics are emphasized and quitely active. But most researches have just proposed the lists of books or materials of the reading activities in Mathematics. Therefore we choose the subject for this study as the analysis of the characteristic attitudes about Mathematics for 3-leveled (high, middle, low) high-school students who have studied Mathematics using the reading activities. After the applications of reading activities for leveled students, we have the following results. For the low-leveled students, the high-leveled(=difficult to understand) reading materials may loose the confidence and interest about Mathematics. The appropriate reading materials for leveled students will increase the interest and change the attitude about Mathematics. We expect that the reading activities in Mathematics extend the logical and rational thinking power that our society has required.

  • In this study, we carried out mathematics teacher-training course. The topic of this training course is the understanding of content area reading in school mathematics. The teacher-training course is planned to guide mathematics teachers can perform effectively the teaching of content area reading. In particular, we illustrated the pre-service mathematics teacher education practice. Mathematics teachers investigated various teaching strategies that can lead their students read reading materials related to mathematics effectively. In this training courses, teachers reflects on their own experience and they have an opportunity to learn the new strategies that improve their teaching methods. Teacher educator and in-service teachers share and discuss their practices, they have a meaningful learning experiences. In this study, we presented the processes of the teacher-training course and the results of practice. Furthermore, on the basis of the limitations of this study, we suggested recommendations for the future teacher training program.

  • In this study we explored the effect of reading in mathematics classroom on five mathematical affective characteristics of middle school students. 100 2nd male middle schoolers' were participated in this study and five affective characteristics - interests, self-confidence, recognition of mathematics value, self-regulation, and mathematics anxiety- were investigated. According to the results, reading in mathematics class had an overall positive effect. Especially the characteristics interests and self-confidence of students' were improved. And for the low level students all characteristics were improved. And based on the result of pre and post test, and interview with 6 students, we suggest that desirable reading in mathematics classroom.

  • The major educational goal of reading part, which occupies important portion in Korean language in Korean SAT, is to evaluated whether a given text can be fully understood. Therefore given questions in the exam must be able to solely solvable by given text. In this paper we developed a datatset based on Korean SAT's reading part in order to evaluate whether a deep learning language model can classify if the given question is true or false, which is a binary classification task in NLP. In result, by applying language model solely according to the passages in the dataset, we were able to acquire better performance than 59.2% in F1 score for human performance in most of language models, that KoELECTRA scored 62.49% in our experiment. Also we proved that structural limit of language models can be eased by adjusting data preprocess.

  • E-books produced in the country provide limited audio service for reading disables. The reason is that those books cannot translate the mathematical expressions and symbols in the context. In this paper, the 'Math Expression Reader' was implemented that can translate the expressions and symbols in the document into Korean speech for those who have reading disabilities. The math to speech generated by this program has been tested to both the public and reading disables and the results of this test has been compared whether they can exactly understand the speech and evaluated the reading rules.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the development direction of future reading education by examining the characteristics of reading materials within the high school textbook developed as the 2015 revised curriculum. For this purpose, reading materials of high school textbooks were analyzed in Korean language, mathematics, English, integrated science, and integrated social studies. The analysis criteria of reading materials were subject type, purpose, and student activities. As a result of the study, reading materials on various themes such as humanity, liberty, culture, environment, and district were presented in the integrated society and integrated science textbook of the 2015 revised curriculum. In particular, the Korean language curriculum was composed of a unit called "reading one book in one semester". However, most reading materials have no guidance on reading effective or reading direction, and lack of reading materials and information for extended reading. The reader's reading of the textbook was found to be simply supplementing the learning content of each unit or presenting fragmentary cues for conceptual purposes. This suggests that there is a lack of awareness of students' interest in reading, internalization of reading, and extension of reading. In this paper, we suggest supplementary materials of reading materials for expanding the high school textbooks, and explore the developmental relationship between textbooks and reading education through suggestions on aspects of textbook composition and teaching methods.

  • This study analyzed students', parents of student, and school master' survey materials and reading, math, and science knowledge performance based on OECD PISA 2009 Koreana data. Also, school library level variables grasped the impacts of academic achievement. Through this study looked for suggestion to improvement, educational accountability and leverage of school library. The results, first, when they use reading more pleasantly thought, they achieve higher scores in academic performance. Second, when they use more books and reading resources in housekeeping, they achieve higher scores in academic performance. Third, when they were more visits school library for exploit internet, they achieve higher lower scores in academic performance. Fourth, when the member of the staff in the school library are more lack of people, they achieve lower scores in academic performance. Fifth, private education's experience in reading have a negative influence in reading achievement and science achievement. Sixth, school library's visiting and library application study about national language curriculum in the impacts of academic performance would not change statistical evaluation significantly.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the behavioral characteristics of gifted children at Mathematics. In order to do this, we observed 4 gifted children at mathematics as participants who are participating in education program of science education center for gifted youths in some university, and we collected related materials. As a result of analyzing materials, we found the followings: First, although the gifted children are self-confident of their mathematical talent, they don't affirm easily that they have the gifted nature. Second, the gifted children have various fields of interest. Especially, they read a mount of books. Third, they are motivating for themselves and have good moral judgment.
