  • This study examined elementary pre-service teachers' (PSTs') perceived preparedness of high-leverage practices (HLPs) in mathematics teaching. Eighty-one elementary PSTs who enrolled in four sections of an elementary mathematics methods course at a Midwestern University in the United States participated in a survey that inquired their self-reported confidence and competence levels on HLPs. This study specifically investigated the comparison between PSTs' perceptions of HLPs and the mathematics teacher educators' expectations. Findings show several glaring differences between the PSTs' perceptions and experts' perceptions in regards to the complexity of some HLPs. This study suggests that initial teacher training programs should include more specific investment in PSTs' insights into details of each teaching practice in mathematics by deliberate decompositions.

  • It is regarded as critical to analyse and re-appreciate Euclidean geometry for the sake of improving school geometry This study, a critical analysis of demonstrative plane geometry in current secondary school mathematics with an eye to the viewpoints of 'Elements of Geometry', is conducted with this purpose in mind. Firstly, the 'Elements' is analysed in terms of its educational purpose, concrete contents and approaching method, with a review of the history of its teaching. Secondly, the 'Elemens de Geometrie' by Clairaut and the 'histo-genetic approach' in teaching geometry, mainly the one proposed by Branford, are analysed. Thirdly, the basic assumption, contents and structure of the current textbooks taught in secondary schools are analysed according to the hypothetical construction, ordering and grouping of theorems, presentations of proofs, statements of definitions and exercises. The change of the development of contents over time is also reviewed, with a focus on the proportional relations of geometric figures. Lastly, tile complementary way of integrating the two 'Elements' is explored.

  • Nowadays there are presented various educational methods based on Constructivism which is regarded as newest epistemological paradigm about Knowledge and knowing, but none which is dramatically new. The educational methods proposed by the advocates of Constructivism are already put in practice by the teachers that are interested. Following this, we will interpret R. Skemp's theory about educational methods based on Constructivism. Here we will introduce various play activities for building number concepts.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the characteristic methods of Mathematics Education. However, it is not simple to find the proper research method of Mathematics Education since Mathematics Education deals with the practice of teaching and learning mathematics, as well as the topics of scholarly research on the practice. Issues on Mathematics Education might vary with the epidemical aspects, which are basic attitudes toward the knowledge and understanding about Mathematics. Thus, this thesis will discuss two questions: First, What are the distinguishing characteristics of Mathematics Education as a field of study, when compared with ones of mathematics? Second, What are the characteristic methods of Mathematics Education, when compared with ones of other academic fields? For solving those questions, this thesis starts from meanings of science and education. And it also classifies Mathematics as formal science whereas Mathematics Education as social science by showing differences between Mathematics and Mathematics Education: research subject of Mathematics targets on mathematics itself and it uses the deductive method. On the other hand, Mathematics Education research handles the practice of mathematics of students and uses plausible reasoning. Also, it will also show why Mathematics Education shares lots of aspects with social science, not with natural science, which has many different characteristics from those of social science. Many researchers have agreed that Education should be categorized into the social science but misplaced Mathematics Education and Science Education into the natural science. It is true that physics and chemistry are natural science. And also it should be said that pure science is formal science. But it should be considered that just like Education, Mathematics Education and Science Education are in the category of social science.

  • This study aims to drive the implications for the structure of mathematics curriculum documents in Korea, exploring the coherence in the documental structure of the IB DP mathematics curriculum, which is gaining international attention. The documents of the IB DP mathematics curriculum were analyzed based on the coherence of external and internal structures. First, the curriculum was consistently described by subject and topic, presenting the table of contents and structure of the documents in the same format. Second, the descriptions of the curriculum between subjects and within the subjects were consistent through the same composition of the subject and assessment methods, the presentation of big ideas, and 'Guidance, clarification and syllabus links'. Third, in 'Connections', the curriculum documents were described with coherence through linking with other subjects by describing the connection plan with the real-world contexts, other subjects, and the 'Theory of Knowledge' in the IB curriculum. Based on these findings and implications for the concreteness and consistency of the components in mathematics curriculum documents, we propose the coherence between the presentation of subject areas and assessment methods of the revised curriculum, and the implementation of coherence in documental structure through links with other subjects.

  • Studies on meta-affect in problem solving tried to build similar structures among affective elements as the structure of cognition and meta-cognition. But it's still need to be more systematic as meta-cognition. This study defines meta-affect as the connection of cognitive elements and affective elements which always include at least one affective element. We logically categorized types of meta-affect in problem solving, and then observed and analyzed the real cases for each type of meta-affect based on the logical categories. We found the operating mechanism of meta-affect in mathematical problem solving. In particular, we found the characteristics of meta function which operates in the process of problem solving. Finally, this study contributes in efficient analysis of meta-affect in problem solving and educational implications of meta-affect in teaching and learning in problem solving.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyse Korean elementary mathematics curriculum taking a philosophical view of mathematics education. In this research, 1 will analyze not only the current elementary mathematics curriculum but also the past ones. There have been intermittently quantitative and external analysis so far to comprehend the elementary mathematics curriculum. But, I thought we also need qualitative and internal comprehension and examined the curriculums through a philosophical analysis. Generally, mathematics curriculums at every period have their own mathematical philosophy consciously or tacitly. And, the school mathematics is the practice of mathematics curriculum based on that mathematical philosophy. Mathematical curriculum reflects both the philosophical aspect in mathematical philosophy that forms the background of the mathematical curriculum and the sociological aspect in real-class that is the output of the curriculum. With this view, the logic of social constructivism can be an appropriate way that leads mathematical philosophical analysis and sociological analysis in mathematics education. So, I comprehend the tendency of the Korean elementary mathematics curriculum from the first to the seventh through the philosophical views. In view of the results so far achieved, after the second half of the 20th century, the Korean mathematical curriculums mainly have the tendency from the Ideology of progressive educator (the first) to of technological pragmatist (the second), from that of old humanist (the third and forth) to progressive educator (the fifth and sixth), and lastly that of social constructivism (the seventh).

  • Qualitative research has become a growing area of interest among the Korean educational researchers for the last two decades. As a consequence, the number of studies based on qualitative methods has rapidly increased while the quality of qualitative research has not gained much credit among scholars in Korea. This study explores to current practice of qualitative approaches in mathematics education-related studies. With this in mind, this study also seeks ways to improve the validity and trustworthiness of qualitative approaches, and to present implications for the practical practice of qualitative approaches in mathematics education. To this end, a general trend was investigated by conducting a basic analysis of 13 papers that used qualitative approaches and published in Communications of Mathematical Education from 2019 to 2020. Of the 13 papers. Through the basic analysis, 6 out of 13 papers were selected as the object of qualitative text analysis. The result of this qualitative text analysis discusses issues related to the validity and trustworthiness of qualitative research in a detailed manner. In conclusion, based on the results of this qualitative text analysis, this study suggests several key points to keep in mind when applying qualitative approaches in the field of mathematics education in the future.
