On Estimation of Weights for Elementary Mathematics Achievement Factors by Using AHP (AHP를 이용한 대학수학 성취도 요인의 중요도 추정)

  • In this paper we study the method to estimate weights of the elementary mathematics achievement factors to get reference index which improves elementary mathematics teaching. For it, we discuss not only a synopsis of AHP but also write out pairwise comparison matrix through statistical survey and estimate weights by eigenvector method.

Influence of Private Tutoring on Middle School Student's Achievement According to the Experience of Gifted Education (사교육과 영재교육 참여경험이 중학생의 수학성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement and the influence of the engagement of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring by applying hierarchical linear growth modeling technique on the KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Study) data. For the analysis, we used KELS data including the score of Mathematics achievement from 2005 to 2007 in order to get useful variables like whether or not to engage private tutoring, weekly time and monthly cost of private tutoring, the experience of gifted education, gender, prior achievement of 6th grade, parents' monthly income, internal motivation and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 4,435 7th graders from Korean middle schools who were included in the KELS and have the data available to a significant dataset having no missing values include. The result suggest that the private tutoring experience predicted students' high Mathematics achievement and the interaction between grade and private tutoring time and cost has negative impact on the mathematics achievement. In contrast, it was found that the experience of gifted education has negative impact on the growth of mathematics achievement, but positive impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement. In other words, the experience of gifted education shows affirmative impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement indirectly. On the basis of this results, we discussed deeply the effect of private tutoring on the Mathematics achievement and the influence and its meaning of the experience of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 1999년에 38개국이 참가하여 시행된, 제3차 수학 과학 성취도 국제비교 반복연구(TIMSS-R)중 화학 영역 성취도를 분석하는 것이다. 우리 나라 중학교 2학년 학생의 화학 성취도를 외국 및 다른 과학 영역과 비교하고, 소영역(물질의 분류, 물질의 구조, 화학반응과 변환, 에너지와 화학 변화)별로 각 문항의 정답율을 분석하였다. 우리 나라 학생들의 화학 점수는 국제 평균보다 높았으나, 다른 과학 영역과 비교하면 그 성취 수준이 상대적으로 낮았다. 특히, 에너지와 화학 변화 영역에서 중학교 2학년까지의 교육과정상 다루지 않는 주제가 많았다. 화학 성취도에 영향을 미치는 주된 요인은 교육과정에 따른 학생들의 학습 경험이었다. 이에 대한 교육학적 함의를 논의하였다.

Exploring Changes in Multi-ethnic Students' Mathematics Achievement Motivation : A Longitudinal Study using Expectancy-Value Theory (다문화가정 학생의 수학학업성취 동기 변화 연구: 기대가치 이론에 따른 종단연구)

  • The goal of this study was to apply an expectancy-value model(Wigfield & Eccles, 2000) to explain changes in six multi-ethnic students' achievement motivation in mathematics during sixth (2012) to eighth (2014) grades. In order to achieve this goal, we used narrative research methods. Although individual students' achievement motivation and mathematics related life experiences differed, there are some common factors influencing their motivation development, especially (a) roles played by parents and teachers; (b) assessment of peers' competencies; (c) past learning experiences related to mathematics curriculum; (d) perception of the relationship between mathematics competency and other subjects; (e) home backgrounds; and (f) perceived task values. In this study, we achieved some insight into why some multi-ethnic students are willing to study hard to get good scores while others are uninterested in mathematics, and why some multi-ethnic students are likely to pursue new mathematical tasks and persist despite challenges, while others easily give up studying mathematics in the face of adversity. We argue that in order to increase and sustain multi-ethnic students' achievement motivation, educators and parents should recognize that motivation is contextually formulated in the intersection of current people, time, and space, not a personal entity formed in an individual's mind. The findings of this study shed light on the development of achievement motivation and can inform efforts to develop multi-ethnic students' positive motivation, which might influence their mathematics achievement and success in school.

The Effects of Students' Mathematics Learning Achievements on Elementary School Teachers' Self-efficiency in Math (수학교과에 대한 초등교사의 자기효능감이 학생들의 수학 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of teaching methods among elementary school math teachers in terms of student achievement in examinations. Results are based upon data from two elementary schools. The evaluation criteria of fifteen items was modified from Ryang's original MTEBI sixteen items to measure elementary school teachers' math teaching efficacy. The result of this study could be summarized as follows. The students were divided into two groups according to teaching efficiency: higher teaching efficiency and lower teaching efficiency. A comparison of math tests taken by students from these groups demonstrates a significant statistical difference. Students with teachers in the lower efficiency group are likely to under-perform. In consequence, teachers' self-efficiency in math is considered to affect students' learning achievement in mathematics.

A study on the effect that five-minute tests influence low level students' improvement of their assessment in mathematics (수학 학습부진 학생의 수학 학습 성취도 향상을 위한 5분 테스트 활용의 효과)

  • In this study, as a teaching way of classes by achievement level, low level students have taken five-minute tests that could be efficient in remedial feedback, and we have investigated the students' improvements of their assessment in mathematics through each of the unit tests. The results show that the five-minute tests with low level classes helped them develop mathematics problem-solving skills and also form positive attitudes about mathematics. More studies of the various methods must be done so that low level students can develop their abilities to solve mathematical problems skillfully.

  • This study aims at checking up influences imposed on mathematics learning abilities in communication teaching through small group leaning for the sixth grade pupils of elementary schools. Results obtained through the study are as follow: The communication teaching through small group cooperative learning showed an affirmative reaction in terms of mathematics learning achievement degree and mathematical tendency. However, the pupils of the lower group showed a meager effect in terms of mathematics learning achievement degree. It means that such an effect is required to a sustained teaching for a long time by teachers.

The effects of grouping method on mathematical achievement and attitude toward mathematics (집단구성이 수학 성취도와 수학에 대한 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was investigate the effects of grouping method on mathematical achievement and attitude toward mathematics. The result of this study are as following. Referring to the improvement of mathematics achievement, TL-LS group I and II turns out to be more efficient than the normal learning groupIII(p<.05), there found no significant differ between TL-LS group I and II (p>.05). As for the level of mathematics achievement, TL-LS group II show more efficient than the normal learning groupIII at a medium and low level(p<.05), and TL-LS group I show more efficient than the normal learning groupIII at a low level(p>.05). As for the attitude toward mathematics, TL-LS group I and II turns out to be more efficient than the normal learning groupIII(p<.05), there found no significant differ between TL-LS group I and II (p>.05).

  • This study is about research into 'National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA)' and 'College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT)' in 5 metropolitan cities and analysis of the result. The objects of study are the materials of mathematics grade of NAEA from 2003 to 2009 and mathematics items of CSAT from 1994 to 2010. The contents of the study are followings. First, the trends of mathematics score of NAEA in elementary, middle and high school is analyzed according to gender, establishment type and the type of school. Second, the trends of CSAT is analyzed according to gender and line (cultural science line or natural science line). Also the trends of application number for cultural science line and natural science line. Third, the trends of the achievement test score of 6th grade in elementary school, third grade in middle school, first grade in high school and the CSAT score in third grade in high school for the same group is considered.

Trends in Education and Polices for Women in Korea: Focusing on Mathematics, Science, and Career Choice (한국의 여성교육과 정책의 흐름 : 수학, 과학, 직업선택을 중심으로)

  • This study is focused on the trends in education and polices for women in Korea. First, historical background of education for women in Korea revealed that a biased view of education for women was deeply rooted. Next, several findings such as international comparison of performance on the PISA, TIMSS, and National Assessment including gender differences especially in Mathematical and Science performance were analyzed. In international assessments, female students perform better in reading literacy, but still fall behind male students in mathematical and scientific literacy, and the gap between the genders are wider than most OECD countries. The change in status of women in contemporary Korea is examined focusing on educational system and women's educational and vocational performance, etc. Additionally, policies planned by Ministry of Science and Technology which show the many execution plans for training and supporting female professionals were presented. Finally, possible reasons for gender differences in educational performance is examined and some suggestions are provided to reduce the gender gap in mathematical and scientific literacy of Korean students.
