Application of Open-source OpenFOAM for Simulating Combustion and Heating Performance in Horizontal CGL Furnace (수평형 CGL 소둔로의 연소 및 가열 성능 해석을 위한 오픈소스 OpenFOAM 기반 전산유체 해석)

  • The main motivation for this study was to establish a CFD-based procedure for the analysis of heating characteristics, particularly in industrial furnaces. As certain open-source software packages have gained popularity in dealing with complex industrial problems, the OpenFOAM framework was selected for further development of advanced physical models to meet industrial requirements. In this study, the newly developed comprehensive model was applied to simulate physical processes in the full-scale horizontal furnace of a continuous galvanizing line (CGL). The numerical results obtained indicate that the current approach predicts heating characteristics reasonably well. It was also found that radiative heat transfer plays a dominant role in heating the moving strip. To improve the predictability of our method, further work is required to model the turbulence-chemistry interaction realistically, as well as to impose a physically correct thermal wall boundary condition.

  • 열차폐 코팅(Thermal Barrier Coating)은 주로 항공기 엔진이나 화력발전용 터빈 등의 $1300^{\circ}C$ 이상의 고온에서 사용되는 부품에 적용되어 모재(내열합금)의 손상 방지 및 에너지 효율 향상을 위해 사용되고 있다. 열차폐 코팅의 경우 Plasma Spray 공법과 EB-PVD(전자빔 물리 증착법) 공법이 가장 많이 사용되고 있다. Plasma Spray에 의한 열차폐 코팅 공정은 생산 비용이 저렴하고 수평형 적층 구조를 통한 높은 열전도율을 가지는 장점이 있으며, EB-PVD 공정은 수직형 구조의 열차폐막을 통해 내열 충격성과 내열 사이클성이 양호하다는 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 열 사이클의 내구성이 뛰어난EB-PVD를 이용하여 열차폐 코팅 공정연구를 진행하였다. 본 연구소에서 사용하고 있는 EB-PVD 는 종래의 장치와는 달리 70 kW급 전자총 5기가 장착 되어 있으며, 각각 시편 가열용 전자총 2기 및 피코팅용 가열 전자총 3기로 구성되어 있다. 이런 구성을 통해 다양한 종류의 열차폐 박막과 높은 결정성과 치밀도를 가지는 박막 형성할 수 있을 것이다. 본 발표에서는 EB-PVD 공정 연구결과 및 향후 실용화를 위한 개발 연구 방향에 대해서 기술하였다.

Experimental Distillation of Ethanol-Propanol Mixture Using a Horizontal Column (수평증류를 이용한 에탄올-프로판올 혼합물의 증류실험)

  • A lab-sized distillation experiment was conducted using small-size packings and a horizontal distillation column. The 6.7 mm Raschig ring type packings of stainless steel and a 40 mm glass column were used, and five independent electric heaters were installed in the axial direction to adjust the column inside temperature separately. The temperature was continuously distributed along the column length to provide equivalent equilibrium to the temperature for the separation. From the experimental results, a larger HETP of the column than the vertical distillation column was obtained, but it was found that the practical separation with proper processing capacity and separation efficiency was available.

Investigation of the changes in texture of soybean sprout depending on the heating conditions in sous-vide and conventional hot water cooking (Sous-vide가열과 열탕가열 조건에 따른 콩나물 머리와 줄기의 조직감 변화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of thermal treatments, such as a sous-vide and a conventional hot water cooking, on the texture changes of soybean sprout. A novel method to measure texture properties of soybean sprout have been determined because of the irregular geometry of soybean sprout. The shape of cotyledon of bean spout was accurately analyzed using an image processing and a geometry model. To minimize the effect of the contact area on the texture measurement, a blade type of probe was selected for the measurement. True stress was evaluated to reflect the shape changes during deformation, and demonstrated that the measurement accurately distinguished the effect of thermal treatment on the texture. Different heating time (i.e., 0, 10, 20, and 30 min) was applied for both sous-vide and conventional cooking. Thermal processing caused hardening of textures for both cotyledon and hypocotyl of soybean sprout. The conventional cooking method showed higher stress values than those of sous-vide cooking. Sprouts cooked by sous-vide released the moisture after thermal processing while sprout cooked by a conventional water bath method could hold the moisture content during thermal processing. The soybean sprouts treated by conventional cooking method showed a higher score in sensory evaluation.

A Study on the Confirmation of non-flammabikity of the Cast Resin Mold Transformer in Subway Substation (지하철 변전실용 진공주형형 몰드변압기의 난연성 확인에 관한 연구)

  • This dissertationhas confirmed the non-flam mability of cast mold transformer that is increasingly used lately. As a research progress, the investigation has been performed on the installation status and each line of the subway system which have the most mold transformer accidents, and the impediment status of the transformer for rectifier and the high-voltage distribution transformer per each manufacturer. Then, a high voltage mold of the actual mold transformer has been installed in the horiwntal heating furnace and the heat has been applied by the standard heating temperature curve of KSF 2257(Fireproof testing meth od of the construction structures: 1993). Accordingly, the combustibility of the mold transformer based on the test results has been found that 78 minutes has been required for the complete burning per the KSF 2257 combustion test curve and that, after stopping the heat application of the horizontal furnace after ignition, the flame progress has not been made but shown as the self-extinguishing characteristics when the flame progress has been checked. Thus, the non-flammability and self-extinguishability of the mold transformer have been confirmed. The result of this dissertation has indicated that the accident involving mold transformer has been progressed and expanded by the dielectric breakdown or void due to the crack in the mold rather than a fire accident caused by a short-circuit or an overload.r an overload.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of heat storing processes in paraffin-filled horizontal circular cylinder is studied. The unmelted solid paraffin is allowed to fall on the bottom wall under gravity. In the upper liquid phase, natural convection is considered to take place while in the lower liquid film between the solid paraffin and the wall conduction is thought to take place instead. Experimental analyses are also carried out. The amount of the latent heat stored is obtained by recording the time wisely changing side area of the solid paraffin photographically. The mass of paraffin melted in the upper section is obtained by substracting the amount of melted mass in the lower section from the total mass melted and therefrom variation of heat transfer rate in each section is studied.

  • The investigation of the fuel cladding temperature behavior and heat transfer mechanism during the reflooding phase of a LOCA plays an important role in performance evaluation of ECCS and safety analysis of water reactors. Reflooding experiments were performed with horizontal and vertical flow channels to investigate the effect of coolant flow channel orientation on rewetting process. Emphasis was mainly placed on the CANDU reactor which has horizontal pressure tubes in core, and the results were compared with those of vertical channel. Also to investigate the rewetting process visually, the experiments by using a rod in annulus and a quartz tube heated outside were performed. It can be concluded that the rewetting velocity in horizontal flow channel is clearly affected by flow stratification, however, the average rewetting velocity is similar to those in vertical flow channel for same conditions.

울진 1,2호기 Cavity에 대한 노심용융물 고압분출 실험 연구

  • 프랑스 가압경수형 원전인 울진 1,2호기 cavity의 격납용기 직접가열에 대한 특성을 분석하기 위하여 노심 용융물 고압분출 실험 연구를 수행하였다. 울진 1,2호기 격납건물은 국내의 Westinghouse와 CE형 원전과 달리 원자로용기 하부 cavity내 수평통로에 의한 출구가 없어 원자로용기 외곽의 환형통로를 통해 cavity와 격납건물 상부 대기와 직접 연결되어 있는 특성을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 환형통로 면적, 파손 직경 용융물 질량 등에 따라 원자로용기 압력을 변화시키면서 용융물을 물, 증기를 질소기체로 각각 모의하여 실험을 수행하였다. 실험결과, 노심용융물 고압분출에는 원자로용기 파손 직경이 많은 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고 환형통로 면적과 용융물 질량은 큰영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 환형통로 면적의 감소는 노심용융물 고압분출시 cav의 압력을 다소 상승시키는 결과를 보여주었다. 본 실험 연구에서 노심용융물 고압분출에 많은 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타난 환형통로 면적에 대해서는 종합적으로 분석하는 추가 실험 이 필요하다.

Numerical Study of Mixed Convection Nanofluid in Horizontal Tube (수평원형관내 나노유체의 혼합대류에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Laminar mixed convection of a nanofluid consists of water and $Al_2O_3$ in a horizontal circular tube has been studied numerically. Two-phase mixture model has been used to investigate hydrodynamic and thermal behaviors of the nanofluid with variables physical properties. Three dimensional Navier-Stokes, energy and volume fraction equations have been discretized using the finite volume method. The Brownian motions of nanoparticles have been considered to determine the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of $Al_2O_3$-Water nanofluid, which depend on temperature. The calculated results show good agreement with the previous numerical data. Results show that in a given Reynolds number (Re), increasing solid nanoparticles volume fraction and Richardson number (Ri) increases the convective heat transfer coefficient and wall shear stress.

Deployment test of shape memory polymer specimens for space antenna design (우주 안테나 설계용 형상기억 폴리머 시편의 전개 시험)

  • In this study, we performed the deployment test of shape memory polymer specimens for space antenna design. Poly(cyclootene) was cross-linked by dicumyl peroxide to make a PCO shape memory polymer. A miniature specimen with 120 mm diameter for a deployable antenna was fabricated with the PCO shape memory polymer. To investigate the deployment performance, the folded specimen as a temporary shape was heated by two heaters to the $15^{\circ}C$ higher temperature than the glass transition temperature of shape memory polymer. Firstly, the specimen was installed horizontally and tested. The deploying motion was captured by a digital camera and analyzed by a Tracker program. To reduce the effects of gravity, the specimen was installed vertically and tested again. The deployment performance of a shape memory polymer was investigated by comparing the results of horizontal and vertical installation tests.
