  • The purpose of this study was to compare the skeletal maturation of cervical vertebrae according to vertical skeletal patterns in the adolescents. Lateral cephalograms of 198 subjects(10 years old), 216 subjects(12 years old), and 138 subjects(14 years old) were reviewed, and subjects were classified according to vertical skeletal patterns. The 30 subjects were selected with the greatest predominance of vertical growth, and the other 30 subjects, with the greatest predominance of horizontal growth; these subjects comprised the vertical and horizontal groups, respectively. For evaluating of skeletal maturation, the concavity of inferior border and verticohorizontal ratio of cervical vertebrae were observed and measured according to age. The measurements were analyzed statistically by SPSS computerized program. The results were as follows : In general, the concavity of the inferior border of the cervical vertebrae was greater in the horizontal group than the vertical group in all of the 10, 12, 14 year olds, but was not statistically significant. The vertico-horizontal ratio of the 3rd and 4th vertebra of the horizontal groups was a significantly larger than the vertical groups in 12 year olds but did not show any statistical significance in 10 and 14 year olds. There were a weak negative correlations between SUM, FMA and the vertico-horizontal ratio for each groups at 12 ages.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the morphology of mandibular symphysis and location of lower incisor under the influence of the craniofacial skeleton in skeletal Class III malocclusion. The sample consisted of 132 adults who have severe Class III malocclusion(prognathism group, 33 males and 33 females), and who have normal occlusion(normal group, 33 males and 33 females). They had not received any orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery. The lateral cephalograms were evaluated. The results were as follows : 1. Prognathism group were larger than normal group in comparison of facial skeleton (p<0.05) with the exception of ${\angle}FH-Pal$, ${\angle}SNA$. 2. In the morphology of symphysis, measurements of anteroposterior width(LaABBW, LiABBW, SW) of prognathism group were significantly less than that of normal group(p<0.001). 3. In the correlative analysis between the craniofacial skeleton and symphysis measurements of prognathism group, vertical measurements in relation with cranial base and mandibular plane showed reverse correlationship with anteroposterior width of symphysis(LiACBW, LaACBW, LiABBW, SW)(p<0.05). But, there was not distinct difference between horizontal skeletal measurements and symphysis measurements(p>0.05). 4. The probability by regression test between vertical measurements(${\angle}SN-Mn,\;{\angle}FMA,\;{\angle}Pal-Mn,\;{\angle}LFH$) and symphysis measurements(LiACBW, LiABBW, SW, ${\angle}LISA$) were very high(p<0.001).

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine differences of mandibular anterior alveolar bone thickness and symphysial cross sectional area in 9 different horizontal and vertical facial types. Methods: By using the initial cephalometric radiographs of 270 adult patients (male 135, female 135), the authors measured the buccolingual thickness of anterior alveolar bone on the basis of the root axis and symphysial cross sectional distance. Results: The high angle group showed significantly thinner buccolingual alveolar bone width except for the CEJ area and lingual alveolar bone width ($p$ < 0.05). The low angle group and Class I, II average group showed similar or significantly thicker alveolar bone width than the Class I average group ($p$ < 0.05). The Class III average group showed significantly thinner buccolingual and lingual alveolar bone width than Class I and II average groups ($p$ < 0.05). The Class III high angle group showed minimal alveolar bone width in all facial skeletal types. No significant difference was found in the symphysial cross sectional area of the different vertical facial skeletal types ($p$ > 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study found that Class III high angle patients have thinner mandibular anterior alveolar bone thickness; therefore, more attention will be needed to determine the incisor position during orthodontic treatment for this group of patients.

  • To extract or not to extract permanent teeth for the correction of malocclusion has been a great debate in the history of orthodontics, and there is a variety of analytic methods and criteria to aid in the diagnosis. Extraction formulas that has been presented are many analytic methods that depend on arch length discrepancy, dental prominence, and skeletal pattern of the each patients. Of these analysis, the most important diagnostic factor is patient's skeletal pattern. Because the behavior of the dentition is closely dependent upon the skeletal pattern of each patient, dentition must be arranged within that person's skeletal frame. EI(Extraction Index) is composed of CF, interincisal angle, and lip position. CF is made of ODI and APDI that differentiate vertical and horizontal component of the skeletal pattern. So, EI not only represents patient's skeletal pattern, but also takes facial appearance into consideration. This study was undertaken to investigate EI and related cephalometric variables on the cephalogram of Korean adolescents which consisted of 153 persons with normal occlusion, harmonious skeleton and pleasing face. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The mean value of the ODI is $73.5^{\circ}$, APDI $82.5^{\circ}$, CF $156.3^{\circ}$ 2. The mean value of the interincisal angle is $123.6^{\circ}$ 3. The mean distance of upper lip to E-line is 0.0mm, lower lip to E-line is 1.4mm. 4. The mean value of the EI is $153.8^{\circ}$.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphology of the mandibular symphysis and anterior alveolar and skeletal relationship under the influence of the rotational growth pattern of mandible in skeletal Class III malocclusion. A total of U untreated adult subjects were divided into two groups-forward rotational growth pattern group, backward rotational growth pattern group-according to the suggestion of Skieller et al.. The antero-posterior position, vertical relationship, mandibular symphysis and anterior alveolar and skeletal relationship were assessed on lateral cephalometric radiographs. Mandibular symphysis and anterior alveolar and skeletal relationship in each subject were studied and the following conclusions were drawn : 1. Concerning the antero-posterior position, forward rotational growth pattern group showed significantly larger SNA, SNB. Conceming the vertical relationship, all measurements showed statistically significant differences. 2. Forward rotatioal growth pattern group showed significantly larger IMPA, MnAD, backward rotational growth pattern group showed significantly larger MxABH. 3. There was no statistically significant difference in symphysis ratio to mandibular plane between forward and backward rotational growth pattern group. 4. In the correlative analysis of rotational growth pattern of mandible and mandibular symphysis, anterior alveolar and skeletal relationship, statistically significant correlations in overbite, IMPA, MnAD, symphysis width were showed.

  • Interest in orthodontic treatment has increased. Consequently, the percentage of the orthodontic treatment in pediatric dentistry has also increased. Given this background, the purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics and the trends of pediatric orthodontic patients of Chonnam National University Dental hospital. A total of 670 patients (349 male, 321 female) diagnosed with orthodontic problems during the period from January 1st, 2004 to December 31st, 2014, were analyzed. The number of pediatric orthodontic patients was high in January, February, July and August. When it comes to age, the percentage of the patients who were eighty-years old accounted for the largest age group with 19.6%, followed by seven-year, nine-year, ten-year, eleven-year, and six-year old age groups. Skeletal class 1 accounted for 48.1% of the total cases, followed by class 2 (28.7%) and class 3 (23.3%). Mesofacial type accounted for 65% of the total cases, followed by dolichofacial type (19.3%) and brachyfacial type (15.8%). The period of the first phase orthodontic treatment was steadily shortened from 30.4 months in 2004 to 11.5 months in 2013. The result of this study is expected to provide information of the pediatric orthodontic patients.

  • The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the skeletal and dental maturity according to the vertical facial type and sex in Korean children in the developmental stage. In total, 184 participants aged 8 - 14 years were selected and divided into three groups based on the mandibular plane angle. For the comparison between the sexes, the three groups were each divided into male and female subgroups. The skeletal and dental maturity were assessed using lateral cephalograms, hand-wrist radiographs and panoramic radiographs. The vertical growth group showed significantly greater cervical vertebral and hand-wrist maturity than that in the horizontal growth group. Dental maturity was the highest in the vertical growth group. Girls showed greater skeletal maturity than boys, and no distinct difference was observed between the dental maturity of the sexes. Analysis of the vertical facial type in children can provide ancillary indicators that may help determine the optimal timing for orthodontic treatment initiation. Earlier initiation of orthodontic treatment may be considered for patients with vertical facial growth patterns.

  • Enlow's counterpart analysis explains the complex with anatomic and developmental characteristics where craniofacial aspect of individuals has been developed. The analysis does not compare individual measurement with the normal value from the average of majority but analyzes by comparison of values that each individual has. This study was to clarify the Korean craniofacial skeletal pattern using Enlow's counterpart analysis considering the fact that the craniofacial skeletal pattern has racial and regional variations. This research will be helpful in the future for growth research and research of the orthognathic surgery. For this study, the samples were consisted of 100 Korean adult subjects(50 males and 50 females) who had normal occlusion and pleasing face. Measurement points and lines were established using Enlow's counterpart analysis and they were statistically evaluated. The results indicated that : 1. The average angle between PCF and PMV was $38.54^{\circ}$ in males and $38.43^{\circ}$ in females, and the average Wits' appraisal was -2.51 in males and -2.3 in females. The ramus alignment(R4) was 1.89 in males and 2.36 in females. 2. It shows that females have a longer ramus than the PCF compared to the males, because there was a significant difference in Ramus/PCF horizontal dimensions (Skeletal A3-B3) between female and male subjects 3. It shows that males have a longer mandibular corpus than the maxilla compared to the females, because there was a significant difference in Maxillary/Mandibular arches(Skeletal A4-B4) between male and female subjects 4. In cranial floor+maxilla/ramus+corpus at A and B points(Al-Bl), which represents difference in total horizontal length between the maxilla and mandible, there was no significant difference between males and females. In conclusions, compared to Caucasian, Korean have more depressed midface, prognathic mandible, and ramus that rotates inferioposterior. Also, we observe that Korean women have target ramus posterior cranial base, as compared with Korean men. Consequently, the total length of maxilla and mandible does not show any difference, because man's mandible is longer than maxilla in comparison with woman's one.
