  • Long-term solar irradiance data are required for reliable performance evaluation and feasibility analysis of solar photovoltaic systems. However, measurement data of the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) are only available for major cities in Korea. Neither the direct normal irradiance (DNI) nor the diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) are available, which are also needed to calculate the irradiance on the tilted surface of PV array. It is a simple approach to take advantage of the decomposition model that extracts DNI and DHI from GHI. In this study, we investigate variations of solar PV power estimation due to the choice of decomposition model. The GHI data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were used and different sets of typical meteorological year (TMY) data using some well-known decomposition models were generated. Then, power outputs with the different TMY data were calculated, and a variation of 3.7% was estimated due to the choice of decomposition model.

  • We measured a solar irradiation of vertical and horizontal surface per azimuth in southern area of Korea using pyrheliometer. In comparison with the provided data from ASHRAE and CIBSE, the average amount of solar irradiation has much variation of 10 to 150% in reference with north direction. In the clear day, the measured value has much difference with the value of ASHRAE and there is similar trend in case of CIBSE. The reason why amount of irradiation of clear day is differ from the average value, is able to be assumed that the value of ASHRAE and CIRSE is made of assumption based on clear days. The result of analysis of ASHRAE and CIBSE values according to the amount irradiation value for vertical and horizontal surface per azimuth using the MBE, RSME, and t-Statistic show that the CIBSE value has more reliability for the MBE, RMSE, and t-Statistic values than ASHRAE value.

  • The main thrust of this paper is to investigate a practical way of generating the monthly averaged daily horizontal solar radiation in Korea. For estimating the horizontal solar radiation, the clearness index($K_T$) and the clearness number($C_N$) which are required for the use of Liu and Jordan's model and ASHRAE Clear Sky model were derived based on the measured weather data. Third-order polynomials returning $K_T$ and$C_N$ for a given location were derived as a function of cloud amount, month, date, latitude and longitude. The predicted monthly averaged daily horizontal solar radiation values were compared with those acquired from the established design weather data. The MBE(Mean Bias Error) and RMSE (Root Mean Squares for Error) between the predicted values and the measured data were near zero. It means that the suggested third-order polynomials for $K_T$ and $C_N$ have good applicability to Liu and Jordan's model and ASHRAE Clear Sky model.

  • In order to analyze the observational environment of solar radiation stations operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), we used the digital elevation model (DEM) and the solar radiation model to calculate a topographical shading, sky view factor (SVF) and solar radiation by surrounding terrain. The sky line and SVF were calculated using high resolution DEM around 25 km of the solar stations. We analyzed the topographic effect by analyzing overlapped solar map with sky line. Particularly, Incheon station has low SVF whereas Cheongsong and Chupungryong station have high SVF. In order to validation the contribution of topographic effect, the solar radiation calculated using GWNU solar radiation model according to the sky line and SVF under the same meteorological conditions. As a result, direct, diffuse and global solar radiation were decreased by 12.0, 5.6, and 4.7% compared to plane surface on Cheongsong station. The 6 stations were decreased amount of mean daily solar radiation to the annual solar radiation. Among 42 stations, eight stations were analyzed as the urgent transfer stations or moving equipment quickly and more than half of stations (24) were required to review the observational environment. Since the DEM data do not include artifacts and vegetation around the station, the stations need a detail survey of observational environment.

  • Site elavation is one of the major factors which is influencing the incoming insolation. Because nonpermanent gases like ozone, water vapor are unmixed components of the atmosphere and their concentrations are function of height, the site elevation effects the relative proportion of the atmospheric constituents. We have measured solar radiation on Sobaek(1,350m) and in Poonggi area(280m). These values were compared to investigate the their charateristics and the potential for the solar utilization as an alternative energy for both high altitude area and low altitude area. From the results, we conclude that 1) Yearly mean 4,093 $kcal/m^2$. day of the horizontal global radiation in Mt. Sobaek was evaluated for clear day. 2) Insolation on Mt. Sobaek is $6{\sim}7%$ higher than Poonggi area during summer and winter seasons. 3) A significant difference of atomospheric clearness index is observed between Mt. Sobaek and Poonggi area at the same latitude.

  • Images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. For the validation, estimated direct normal Insolation is compared with observed direct normal Insolation at 16 sites over the Korean peninsular from January 1982 to December 2010. Estimated direct normal Insolation shows reliable results with average deviation of -5.4 to +5.9% from the measured values and the yearly averaged direct normal Insolation of Korean peninsula was turned out to be 2.93 $kW/m^2/day$.

  • This study examined the electric power quantity derived from solar radiation after installing a photovoltaic power generation system on the rooftop of building adjacent to a greenhouse with a view to reducing the operating expenses of the greenhouse by securing electric energy required to run it. Results of the study can be summed up as follows: The maximum, mean, and minimum solar radiation on the horizontal plane was $26.1MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, $14,0MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, and $0.6MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, respectively and individual the daily electric energy generated was about 6.1 kWh, 3.7 kWh, and 0.01 kWh. The cumulative total amounts of solar radiation and electric energy was about $4,378.2MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and 1,163.2 kWh, respectively. Maximum, mean and minimum cumulative electric energy consumed through each load respectively was 4.5 kWh, 2.4 kWh, and 0.0 kWh and the cumulative electric energy were 739.2 kWh, which accounted for about 63.5% of generated power. In case of the mean amount of power consumption of the system used for this study, the small capacity of heater and the short operating hours meant there was enough power; while big capacity of heater led to a shortage, and if the array surface temperature increased relatively, the energy became proportionate to solar radiation and generated power does not increase. The correlation coefficient between the two factors was 0.851, which indicates a high correlation coefficient.

  • The growing global interest in energy saving is particularly evident in the building sector. The transmitted solar irradiance is an important input in the prediction of the building-energy load, but it is a value that is difficult to measure. In this paper, a calculation method, for which the total horizontal irradiance that can be easily measured is employed, for the measurement of the transmitted solar irradiance through windows is proposed. The method includes a direct and diffuse split model and a variable-transmittance model. The results of the proposed calculation model are compared with the TRNSYS-simulation results at each stage for the purpose of validation. The final results show that the CVRMSE over the year between the proposed model and the reference is less than 30 %, whereby the ASHRAE guideline was achieved.
