  • The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the laminated rubber bearings (LRBs) for the seismic isolation. The evaluations of the proposed equations of the LRB horizontal stiffness are carried out and these equations are extended to the visco-elastic problems to investigate the damping amplifications of LRBs. The stability evaluation of LRBs is also performed. For investigation of the dynamic characteristics of LRBs, the horizontal stiffness equations of the LRBs considering the P-delta effects are applied to the modeling of a seismically isolated structure and the earthquake response time history analyses are carried out. From this research, the proposed simple equation of the horizontal stiffness of LRB is so useful for the design loads and easily extended to the visco-elastic problems. Through the stability evaluation of LRB, the increasing ratio of the total rubber thickness of the LRB severely decrecises the bucking load than the increasing ratio of unit rubber thickness. From the comparison of the dynamic shear deflection of LRB, the analysis results are in good agreement with those of the experiments.

  • Though stiffnesses of joints in precast concrete(P.C.) large panel structures are known to be generally less than those in monolithic reinforced concrete wall structures, designers have very little information on the quantitative values with regards to these stiffnesses. The aim of this paper is to provide this quantitative information, in particular, on the compressive stiffness of horizontal joints, based on the analytical results derived from several experiments. Also, it is shown that the approach from the contact problem to determine this stiffness gives a value very simlar to those obtained above.

  • In this study, a torsional test for U-type steel box girders was performed to observe the effects of the kind of panel for top lateral walateral bracings on the torsional behavior of the U-type steel girder system. For the structural tests, the test specimen with a two-thirds scale of the system actually constructed in the field was used. In the torsional test to observe the efects of top lateral bracings, the most economical arrangement of the top lateral bracing was found to be the panel width to length ratio of 1:1.5 with the inclined angle of $40^{\circ}$.

  • This research aimed to propose the more proper equation than the leading and existing equations to predict the optimum location of offset outrigger. In this study, a 79 existing models of offset outrigger system were examined. And the key factors in the existing offset outrigger models were the stiffness of shear wall and offset outrigger system, the stiffness of exterior column connected in offset outrigger, the frame stiffness, the ratios of lateral stiffness of frame in shear wall-frame structures, and all that. This paper proposed the modified equation of predicting the optimal location of offset outrigger system. Additionally, the findings of this study provided the important structure engineering materials of the optimal offset outrigger position in tall building.

  • A series of model tests was performed to find the characteristics of lateral behavior of single rigid pile. This paper shows the results of model tests on the lateral behavior of single rigid driven pile in non-homogeneous(two layered) Nak-Dong River sands. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length, the coefficient ratio of the subgrade reaction and the pile construction conditions(driven & embedded piles) on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. The results of model tests show that the lateral behavior in non-homogeneous soil depends upon drop energy considerably, that is, in the case of H/L=0.75, as the drop energy increases three times the decrease percentage increases about 2.12 times. In the driven pile with non-homogeneous soil of $E_{h1}/E_{h2}=5.56$, the effect of upper layer with large stiffness on the decrease of lateral deflection is remarkably smaller than embedded pile. In non-homogeneous soil, the maximum bending moment of driven pile is in the range of 100 132% in comparison with embedded pile. The reason is that the stiffness of soil around pile increases with drop vibration and so the pile behavior is similar to the flexible pile behavior by means of the increase of relative stiffness of pile, In this paper, the experimental equations for lateral load and H/L on $y_D/y_E \; & \; MBM_D/MBM_E$ are suggested from model tests.

  • This paper presents results from a series of model tests on laterally loaded single piles with both free-head and free-tip conditions. Model tests, using a centrifuge apparatus (middie size, Mark II in 7.1.7.) were carried out in sand based on the variation of different gravity acceleration and flexural stiffness of the pile and relative density of the soil. The aims of this study are to estimate the effect of gravity acceleratioil, flexordis stiffness, and relative density on the behavior of the pile embedded in Toyoura sand and to evaluate the applicability of a family of the p-y curves which was presented by several reseachers(Mur chison & O'Neill, neese et n., scott, Det worske veritas, nondner). The Program is deviloped by using p-y curves, and it can be used for the calculation of the displacement distri bution, bending moment distribution, and soil reaction distribution. By comparing meas ured responses with predicted one it is shown that the results of the p-y curve equation presented by Murchison & O'Neill and Kondner agreed with the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests much better than the numerical solutions predicted by the other sets of p -y curves.

  • This paper presents an experimental study to investigate enhanced performance of the masonry walls strengthened in shear and ductility using honeycomb steel mesh. The performance of masonry walls strengthened with steel mesh will compare with unreinforced masonry walls to show the performance of reinforced masonry walls. According to the experiment, it is expected that this system is effective to enhance the shear strength and ductility of the masonry walls.

  • A parametric study for varying the radii of curvature is performed with a curved tub girder bridge having three continuous spans. The bracing forces of top lateral bracings from the results of numerical equations are compared to those of 3-dimensional finite element analyses. New modifying factors applicable in computing the nominal member forces of top lateral bracings were suggested. The numerical equations were derived based on one girder system, and it is shown that the numerical equations exhibit some errors compared with 3D FEA results. The main reason for this phenomenon lies on the number of girders. The twin girder system has an external cross-beam between inner and outer girder. It also has larger lateral stiffness than the single girder system. Finally, the distributions by the torsion, bending, distortion, and lateral loading of the top lateral bracing forces were presented in this paper.

  • This paper describes a systematic way of identifying the horizontal coefficient of consolidation of clayey soil by applying an optimization technique to the early part of dissipation data measured from the self-boring pressuremeter strain holding test. An analytical solution developed by Randolph & Wroth (1979) was implemented in normalized form to express the build-up of excess pore pressures as a function of the rigidity index and subsequent dissipation of excess pore pressures around a pressuremeter Horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical and measured excess pore pressure curves over 50% degree of dissipation range using optimization technique. The effectiveness of the proposed back-analysis method was examined against the real fled performances obtained from pressuremeter strain holding tests at Gimje and Yangsan site. It is shown that the proposed back-analysis method can evaluates the rational horizontal coefficient of consolidation, which is similar to those obtained from the piezocone dissipation test. Furthermore, proposed method can evaluate appropriate coefficient of consolidation for soil under partially drained condition.
