  • The efficient dynamic modeling of a satellite with flexible solar arrays is established by using the component mode synthesis technique. A flexible satellite model can be defined as the assembly of two sub-structures, central body and solar array. The reduced models of each substructure, which are expressed in each local frame, are coupled with respect to the satellite reference frame. The dynamic modeling method is applied to the numerical example of a satellite with a single solar array, and is verified by investigating the transfer function results with considering the solar array rotation.

  • Cavitation on an axi-symmetric hemispherical head-form body was studied using an Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. To consider compressibility effects on the vapor phase and cavity interface, a pressure-based compressible flow CFD code was developed. To validate the developed CFD code, cavitating flow around the hemispherical head-form body was simulated using pressure-based incompressible and compressible CFD codes and validated against existing experimental data in the three-way comparison. The cavity shedding behavior, length of re-entrant jet, drag history, and Strouhal number of the hemispherical head-form body were compared between two CFD codes. The results, in this paper, suggested that the computations of cavitating flow with compressibility effects improve the description of cavity dynamics.

  • The performance of the wind turbine is determined by wind speed and unsteady flow characteristics. Unsteady wake flow causes not only the decline in performance but also structural problems of the wind turbine. In this paper, conceptual designs for the wind turbine tower are conducted to minimize unsteady wake flow. Numerical simulations are performed to inspect the shape effect of the tower. Through the installation of additional structures at the rear of the tower, the creation of Karman vortex is delayed properly and vortex interactions are reduced extremely, which enhance the stability of the wind turbine. From the comparative analysis of lift and drag coefficients for each structure, it is concluded that two streamwise tips with a splitter plate have the most improved aerodynamic characteristics in stabilizing wake flow.

  • A nonlinear dissipative dynamical system can often have multiple attractors. In this case, it is important to study the global behavior of the system by determining the global domain of attraction of each attractor. In this paper we study the global behavior of a forced beam with two mode interaction. The governing equation of motion is reduced to two second-order nonlinear nonautonomous ordinary differential equations. When .omega. /=3.omega.$_{1}$ and .ohm.=.omega $_{1}$, the system can have two asymptotically stable steady-state periodic solutions, where .omega./ sub 1/, .omega.$_{2}$ and .ohm. denote natural frequencies of the first and second modes and the excitation frequency, respectively. Both solutions have the same period as the excitation period. Therefore each of them shows up as a period-1 solution in Poincare map. We show how interpolated mapping method can be used to determine the two four-dimensional domains of attraction of the two solutions in a very effective way. The results are compared with the ones obtained by direct numerical integration.

  • The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model twisting and flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various twisting angles and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle($20^{\circ}$). And the effects of the twisting on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.

  • Thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena of piezolaminated plates are investigated by applying an are-length scheme to Newton-Raphson method. Based on the layerwise displacement theory and von Karman strain-displacement relationships, nonlinear finite element formulations are derived for the thermopiezoelastic composite plates. From the static and dynamic viewpoint, nonlinear thermopierzoelastic behavior and vibration characteristicx are stuied for symmetric and eccentric structural models with various piezoelestric actuation modes. Present results show the possibility to enhance the performance, namely thermopiezoelastic snapping, induced by the excessive piezoelectric actuation in the active suppression of thermally buckled large deflection piezolaminated paltes.

  • Natural convective flow and heat transfer characteristics in a partially opened enclosure fitted with a horizontal divider are investigated numerically. The enclosure is composed of a lower hot and a upper cold horizontal walls and adiabatic vertical walls. A divider is attached perpendicularly to the vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations have been carried out by varying the length of divider, the opening size, and the Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height for air(Pr=0.71). As result, when the opening size is fixed, the intensity of the secondary flow is weaken as the length of divider increases. The maximum heat transfer rate over the upper cold wall occurs at a position bounded on the opening. However, when the length of divider is increased considerably, its maximum occurs at the right wall. The stability and frequency of oscillation are affected by the Rayleigh number and length of divider. The Nusselt number is increased with the increase of the opening size and the increase of Rayleigh number.

  • To analyze the flow distribution formed by multiple acoustic sources, the distribution of acoustic streaming speed caused by an ultrasonic transducer composed of two identical piezoelectric vibrators was examined for various angles between the sound sources. In order to measure the distribution of the speed along the acoustic axis of the transducer, a simple measurement method using a droplet indicator having density similar to that of water is suggested. The simulation results calculated by a numerical method and experimental results showed a similar tendency, and the change of flow speed distribution with the intersection angle between acoustic beams radiated from two acoustic sources was analyzed.

  • The accuracy of the uniform WKB solution for a two-turning point problem is examined in comparison with the corresponding numerical solution. It is found that the uniform WKB solution is extremely accurate. Various Franck-Condon factors for a model system are calculated as an example of applications of such approximate wavefunction. The accuracy of the factors thus calculated is very good. By using the uniform WKB wavefunctions, we have examined the asymptotic limit of the Frank-Condon factors and derived the condition for the frequencies of the transitions, $E'_{n'J'}-U'_{eff}(r_s)=E"_{n"J"}-U"_{eff}(r_s),$, which was obtained by Mulliken using physical arguments.
