  • The IMO has adopted emission standards that strictly restrict the use of bunker C oil for vessels. Accordingly, research and bunkering pilot projects for LNG fueled ships are being actively carried out, which is expected to substantially reduce environmental pollution. In this study, we have adopted the turret moored Floating LNG Bunkering Terminal (FLBT) designed to receive the LNG from LNGCs and to transfer LNG to LNG bunkering shuttles in ship to ship moored condition. Numerical simulations have been performed with a 1-year return period of wind, wave, and current. Damping values of numerical model were adjusted from the results of model tests to obtain accurate simulation results. The results confirm safe berthing operation during the 1-year return period of environmental condition. Safety depends on the direction of environment, with increasingly stable operation facilitated by the application of heading-control function of FLBT to avoid beam-sea conditions.

  • Jeju island has a special ground layer called 'Sumgol' due to the geological characteristics. The terminology 'Sumgol' is generally defined as the rain fall flows through the Sumgol without blocking and smaller size than cave, which men cannot enter. This paper presents the influence of the Sumgol on ground stability under various loading conditions using numerical simulations when the airport is constructed. The results showed that the vertical settlements of each section are within the allowable settlement.

  • Recently, as earthquakes have occurred in Gyeongju, interest in the stability of structures against vibration from earthquakes has increased. In Korea, the capacity of load resistance is mainly considered in the design of anchors. However, the vibration resistance characteristics of anchors have not been fully elucidated. The traditional type of anchor, which is a frictional resistance anchor, is often reported to fail due to vibration in construction procedures, such as blasting. The expansion type of anchor, on the other hand, could have more resistance to vibration but its capability of demonstrating vibratory resistance has to be investigated. In order to verify the vibratory resistance characteristics of expansion anchors against blasting and earthquake vibration, field tests and numerical analyses for seismic wave were performed. Field blasting test results show that the expansion anchor has better capability against vibratory load than does the frictional type anchor. Numerical analysis to earthquake also show that the expansion type anchor provides more resistance than does the frictional type anchor.

  • When a borehole is drilled, the load distributed by the removal is taken to re-establish equilibrium. As a result, the stresses around the borehole is redistributed. If there is no hydrostatic support pressure by drilling fluid (mud) introduced into the borehole, failure in the formation may take place. The mud pressure boundary that keeps the borehole stable is defined as a mud window. To predict the potential for failures around the borehole, a series of numerical analysis were performed and compared with a mud window. The effect of failure criterion and the intial stress ratio adopted on the mud window was also studied.

  • The tilting-train being operated in pre-existing rail road has a different running mechanism compared to currently operated trains. Therefore, it needs to investigate the evaluation of the track performance, the stability of the tilting-train in operating condition, and the stability of the roadbed. In this study, when the tilting train is operated in the rail joint with the allowable velocity limited by the track performance and the stability of the tilting-train, the settlement of the roadbed has been evaluated by using numerical analysis. The loading on the ground surface generated by the operating tilting-train generates the settlement of the roadbed. The settlement induced by the tilting-train loading has been compared to the allowable settlement and the factor of safety defined by the ratio of the allowable settlement to the settlement generated by the applied loading is evaluated.

  • Behavior of a rock block consisting of rock joints during excavation of an underground opening is an important factor for the mechanical stability of the opening. In this study, the behavior of a rock block under different geostatic stress and joint property conditions was analyzed quantitatively. The behavior of the rock block analyzed by 3DEC numerical analysis was compared with that of the theoretical calculation, and the error between the theoretical value and the numerical analysis result was analyzed under various geostatic stress and joint property conditions. The result of the stability analysis of a rock block showed less than 5% of error with numerical simulation result, which verified the applicability of the purposed analytic solution.

  • 1-D hydrodynamic numerical models have been most widely used in the field of flood analysis. The model's input data are upstream/downstream boundaries, roughness coefficients, cross-sections, and so on, and computational distance step and time step are the most important factors in order to guarantee the computational accuracy, stability, and efficiency. In this study, a theoretical explanation is presented for the basis of the previous empirical selection criteria of cross-section's location; also, the estimation technique of computationally variable distance step is proposed to reflect the properties of flow at every computational time step. Combining this technique with 1-D unsteady numerical model, it was applied to two events of Teton dam failure flood and the Han River flood. The numerical experimental results demonstrate that the accuracy and stability is increased when used more interpolated cross-sections and show that the proposed technique of computationally variable distance step has the same order of accuracy with smaller numbers of cross-section than previous empirical selection criteria. The practical use of this technique will be possible to analyze the river floods with high efficiency as well as accuracy and stability.

  • Recently, the mining methods are changing from surface mining to underground mining because of the increment of the environmental issues and legal regulations. Therefore, the stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity of mining operations. In this paper, a survey of structural geology and discontinuities were carried out at a limestone mine. The relevant mechanical properties of rocks were determined by the laboratory tests and rock mass classifications (RMR and Q-system) for the mine design and input data for the stability analysis. The dimensions of unsupported span for underground openings and pillar were decided based on the RMR values of rock mass classifications. The stability analysis for the suggested mine design was examined through the empirical methods (stability graph method and critical span curve) and 3-D numerical analysis (Visual-FEA).
