  • There are technical difficulties in measuring the numerical apertures of multi-mode gradient-index plastic optical fibers (GI-POFs) due to their strong speckle noise originating from dopants, non-uniformity of gradient-index profile, and multi-mode interference. Therefore, we propose a new method of obtaining the numerical aperture by controlling the size of the incident laser beam and measuring the numerical aperture of GI-POF. The results show that we can get a value for the numerical aperture of GI-POF very similar to that measured by the conventional method. We can also obtain the optimum launching condition of input beam and maximum coupling efficiency.

  • According to the paraxial diffraction theory, diffractions of optical systems which have the same wavelength and numerical aperture are always the same, independent of lateral magnification. But the diffractions for optical systems with different magnifications are varied due to the non-paraxial diffraction effect on the imaging of high NA optics. In this study, the non-paraxial diffraction effect is interpreted as a phenomena caused by curved principal planes. Pupil functions and modulation transfer functions of aplanatic conic mirrors are examined as a function of lateral magnification.

  • A plenoptic optical system for microscopy comprises an objective lens, tube lens, microlens array (MLA), and an image sensor. Numerical aperture (NA) matching between the tube lens and MLA is used for optimal performance. This paper extends performance predictions from NA matching to unmatching cases and introduces a computational technique for plenoptic configurations using optical analysis software. Validation by fabricating and experimenting with two sample systems at 10× and 20× magnifications resulted in predicted spatial resolutions of 12.5 ㎛ and 6.2 ㎛ and depth of field (DOF) values of 530 ㎛ and 88 ㎛, respectively. The simulation showed resolutions of 11.5 ㎛ and 5.8 ㎛, with DOF values of 510 ㎛ and 70 ㎛, while experiments confirmed predictions with resolutions of 11.1 ㎛ and 5.8 ㎛ and DOF values of 470 ㎛ and 70 ㎛. Both formula-based prediction and simulations yielded similar results to experiments that were suitable for system design. However, regarding DOF values, simulations were closer to experimental values in accuracy, recommending reliance on simulation-based predictions before fabrication.

  • The modulation transfer function is generally used as a method to estimate the characteristics of this kind of optical system because it cannot reappear or implement image of the object perfect. By the way, it is difficult to assess the optical system with existing MTF method since the reaction between diffraction and aberration of aperture is very complicate if the aberration is very small. The MTF has to be calculated considering the numerical aperture, defocusing, OPD and phase difference. We validate its feasibility using bessel function as an estimating method, and then realize it through illustration in this paper.

  • Heat regenerator occupied by regenerative materials improves thermal efficiency of regenerative combustion system through the recovery of heat of exhaust gaset. By using one-dimensional two-phase fluid dynamics model, the unsteady thermal flow of heat regenerator with spherical particles, was numerically simulated to evaluate the heat transfer and pressure drop and thereby to suggest the parameter for designing heat regenerator. It takes about 7 hours for the steady state of the flow field in regenerator, in which heat absorption of regenerative particle is concurrent with the same magnitude of heat desorption. The regenerative particle experiences small temperature fluctuation below 10 K during the reversing process. The performance of thermal flow in heat regenerator varies with inlet velocity of exhaust gas and air, configuration of regenerator (cross-sectional area and length) and diameter of regenerative particle. As the gas velocity increases, the heat transfer between gas and particle enhances and with the increase the pressure losses. As particle diameter decreases, the air is preheated higher and the exhaust gases are cooled more with the increase of pressure losses.

  • High NA objective design by using SELFOC materials was studied, and two kinds of objective for optical pick-up were designed. The SELFOC materials have radial gradient index distribution, and it gives additional degree of freedom in optical design. Therefore, we expect that optical design of high NA objective without aspheric surface will be possible. In this study, the variation of ms spot diameter was investigated as a function of quadratic constant and refractive index on axis for various combinations of axial thickness and entrance pupil diameter. For the survey, Code V was used for optimization and evaluation of the objective lenses. The result suggested that larger quadratic constant and higher refractive index on axis could give us better imaging performance for all combinations of axial thickness and pupil diameter. Based on the survey, we designed high NA objectives for DVR. There were two kinds of design solution consisting two spherical SELFOC lenses. The solution I had positive-positive lens configuration with short over-all-length, but it had poor off-axial performance compared with the solution II. The solution II had negative-positive lens configuration with good off-axial imaging performance. But the solution II had some disadvantages, long over-all-length and large diameter of the second lens.

  • We analyzed the aspheric and/or diffractive surface effects to the performance in the long wavelength infrared (8-12 $\mu$m). Also we investigated the dependence of the NA values for the fixed effective focal length 100 mm when the field angle was varied from 5 degrees to 30 degrees stepped by 5 degrees. We chose the merit function as a criteria to compare the performance of the different lenses. Based on the analysis of the aspheric and/or diffractive surface effects, we designed the optical system of F/l.0 for the uncooled thermal imaging system. As for detector the pixel size was 45 $\mu$m square and the number of pixels were a 320${\times}$240 pixels.

  • We theoretically investigated the far-field radiation pattern of epi-signal from a polystyrene sphere in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy with an objective lens of high numerical aperture. We calculated the field distribution of the incident laser beams under the tight-focusing condition and the far-field radiation pattern through coherent addition of radiation from the nonlinear polarizations (Hertzian dipoles) as the origin of CARS signal generation. The epi-radiation patterns for polystyrene spheres of different diameters are calculated, and the pattern of a sphere is also compared with that of a shell fer a diameter of 1100 nm. We finally show how the radiation pattern of the polystyrene sphere changes as the center of the sphere shifts from the focus of the beam.

  • The paper is concerned with the pre-arcing behavior of rapid current limiting fuselink using copper as a melting element. The phenomenon is faced by a numerical simulation(especially, FDM is applicated) of the melting element. Through the results, we can know the trends of the I-t characteristics and temperature distribution along the x axis for different fuselink shapes with circular, rectangular, and skew restriction type respectively, to be good for designing the optimal element.
