  • Skeletal muscle fatigue is often associated with diminished athletic performance and inability to maintain an expected force output as a function of time. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of duration of exercise on skeletal muscle fatigue between Weight Lifters(WL) and Non-Weight Lifters(NWL). There were twelve normal healthy adult volunteers, ranging in age from 18 to 35 years. The group consisted of six NWL and six WL. Randomized cross-over design was set up and work-rest cycle was 8 minutes work and 1 minute rest based on 15% MVC. Muscle fatigue was measured by the amount of force produced by the wrist flexor muscle and EMG amplitude over time. Repeated measures ANOVAs($2{\times}4$) were used to determine two types of subjects(WL, NWL) during four different duration of exercises(16, 32, 48, 64 minutes). The force decreased over time in NWL and WL, but there was no significant difference(F=2.83, p>0.05). However, the EMG amplitude increased in WL(0.8200) and NWL(0.6348). The WL exhibited an increase in EMG at the end of the period, especially at 48 minutes of exercises than did the NWL(F=9.58, p<.05). This suggests the WL were able to adjust to prolonged effort with adaptations in neural effect over time, resulting in higher EMG amplitude. That is, WL may be able to learn to recruit more motor units with training. It is important to the degree of neuromuscular fatigue and the time needed for recovery may differ considerably between WL and NWL, there is a need to plan proper strength training or rehabilitation protocols to match with the requirements in different characteristics of groups.

  • In this study, we apply the facial Facial Action Coding System for coding the muscular system anatomical approach facial expressions to be displayed in response to a change in sensitivity. To verify by applying the virtual character the Duchenne smile to the original. I extracted the Duchenne smile by inducing experiment of emotion (man 2, woman 2) and the movie theater department students trained for the experiment. Based on the expression that has been extracted, I collect the data of the facial muscles. Calculates the frequency of expression of the face and other parts of the body muscles around the mouth and lips, to be applied to the virtual character of the data. Orbicularis muscle to contract end of lips due to shrinkage of the Zygomatic Major is a upward movement, cheek goes up, the movement of the muscles, facial expressions appear the outer eyelid under the eye goes up with a look of smile. Muscle movement of large muscle and surrounding Zygomatic Major is observed together (AU9) muscles around the nose and (AU25, AU26, AU27) muscles around the mouth associated with openness. Duchen smile occurred in the form of Orbicularis Oculi and Zygomatic Major moves at the same time. Based on this, by separating the orbicularis muscle that is displayed in the form of laughter and sympathy to emotional feelings and viable large muscle by the will of the person, by applying to the character of the virtual, and expression of human I try to examine expression of the virtual character's ability to distinguish.

  • A 25-year-old man with viral cardiomyopathy and chronic active hepatitis successfully underwent dynamic cardiomyoplasty for the first time in Korea on July 30, 1996. The patient had been intermittently dyspneic for 5 years and was admitted to our center twice because of heart failure. For the past 2 years, he was NYHA functional class III status with a left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) of around 30%. The patient was born with scoliosis and showed a short stature. The liver function showed elevated liver enzymes, and hepatitis B antigen was positive. The liver biopsy revealed chronic active hepatitis. The preoperative echocardiogram showed decreased left ventricular function with grade II mitral and grade II tricuspid regurgitation with dilated left and right atrium. Recently his symptoms worsened and we decided to perform a dynamic cardiomyoplasty. The left latissmus dorsi muscle(LDM) was mobilized and tested with lead placement on his right lateral decubitus position. The patient was positioned into supine and, after median sternotomy, the heart was wrapped with the mobilized muscle. The Russian made cardiomyostimulator(EKS-445) and leads (Myocardial PEMB for heart and PEMP-1 for LDM) were used. The total operation time was 8 hours and there were no perioperative episodes. Postoperatively the LDM had been trained for a 10 week period and currently the stimulation ratio is maintained at 1:4. The postoperative LVEF did not increase with the value of 30-35%. However, the patient feels better postoperatively with slightly increased activity.

  • Background: It is not easy to surgically correct caustic pharyngeal strictures and a lot of effort is required to restore normal swallowing after the surgery. The authors reviewed the course in patients who underwent pharyngocolostomy. Material and Method: From August 1995 to March 1998, 6 patients with caustic stricture underwent esophageal reconstruction surgery. The time of injury to the replacement of the esophagus was from 3 months to 2 years and 4 months. The left colon was used in all patients. The surgical route was used under the sternum in 5 patients and through the esophageal hiatus in 1 patient. In the cervical anastomoses, the cervical pharyngocolic anastomosis was performed on the left pyriform sinus after a partial resection of the thyroid cartilage in 3 patients and on the posterolateral aspect of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor in 3 patients. Result: Postoperative complications consisted of a dysphagia in 3 patients and left vocal cord palsy in 1 patient. There was no cervical anastomotic stricture. Revisional procedures consisted of an esophageal dilation and free jejunal graft in 1 patient, supraglottic scar band resection in 1 patient, and colonic mucosal resection in 1 patient. Swallowing training was required in the 3 patients with dysphagia. Restoration of normal swallowing was obtained in all patients between the 9th and the 303rd day. Conclusion: Pharyngocolostomy is a satisfactory method of treatment for patients with intractable caustic stricture. Pharyngocolojejunostomy is an effective alternative for esophagocologastrostomy in cases where gastric outlets are involved.

  • This study aims to provide the basic data of the rehabilitation program for the schoolchild with intellectual disability by designing new framework of the features of postural control for the schoolchild with intellectual disability. For this, the study investigated what sensations the schoolchild are using to maintain posture by selectively or synthetically applying vision, vestibular sensation and somato-sensation, and how the coordinative sensory system of the schoolchild is responding to any sway referenced sensory stimulus. The study intended to prove the limitation of motor system in estimating the postural stability by providing the cognitive motor task, and provided the features of postural control of the schoolchild with intellectual disability by measuring the onset times and orders of muscle contraction of neuron-muscle when there is a postural control taking place due to the exterior disturbance. Furthermore, by comparatively analyzing the difference between the normal schoolchild and the intellectually disabled schoolchild, this study provided an optimal direction for treatment planning when the rehabilitation program is applied in the postural control ability training program for the schoolchild with intellectual disability. Taking gender and age into consideration, 52 schoolchild including 26 normal schoolchild and 26 intellectually disabled schoolchild were selected. To measure the features of postural control, CTSIB test, and postural control strategy test were conducted. The result of experiment is as followed. First, the schoolchild with intellectual disability showed different feature in using sensory system to control posture. The normal schoolchild tended to depend on somato-sensory or vision, and showed a stable postural control toward a sway referenced stimulus on somato-sensory system. The schoolchild with intellectual disability tended to use somato-sensory or vision, and showed a very instable postural control toward a sway referenced vision or a sway referenced stimulus on somato-sensory system. In sensory analysis, the schoolchild with intellectual disability showed lower level of proficiency in somato-sensation percentile, vision percentile and vestibular sensation percentile compare to the normal schoolchild. Second, as for the onset times and orders of muscle contraction for strategies of postural control when there is an exterior physical stimulus, the schoolchild with intellectual disability showed a relatively delayed onset time of muscle control, and it was specially greater when the perturbation is from backward. As for the onset orders of muscle contraction, it started from muscles near coax then moved to the muscles near ankle joint, and the numbers and kinds of muscles involved were greater than the normal schoolchild. The normal schoolchild showed a fast muscle contracting reaction from every direction after the perturbation stimulus, and the contraction started from the muscles near the ankle joint and expanded to the muscles near coax. From the results of the experiments, the special feature of the postural control of the schoolchild with intellectual disability is that they have a higher dependence on vision in sensory system, and there was no appropriate integration of swayed sensation observed in upper level of central nerve system. In the motor system, the onset time of muscle contraction for postural control was delayed, and it proceeded in reversed order of the normal schoolchild. Therefore, when use the clinical physical therapy to improve the postural control ability, various sensations should be provided and should train the schoolchild to efficiently use the provided sensations and use the sensory experience recorded in upper level of central nerve system to improve postural control ability. At the same time, a treatment program that can improve the processing ability of central nerve system through meaningful activities with organizing and planning adapting reaction should be provided. Also, a proprioceptive motor control training program that can induce faster muscle contraction reaction and more efficient onset orders from muscularskeletal system is need to be provided as well.

  • The fabrication of ceramic machine components by injection molding(CIM : Ceramic Injection Molding) is critically dependent on the shaping and binder extraction techniques. Injection molding is of keen interest to ceramic industries because CIM is suitable for making an intricate shape and manufacturing cost is lower than other process when production scale is large. The success of the molding process is dependent on the correct formulation of the organic vehicle and the achievement of optimum filler loading. Fine alumina powders and polyethylene binder systems were employed to prepare moldable blend then produce a simple specimen by compression molding. Flow characteristics of the mixture was evaluated by viscosity measurement. Optimum binder system and ceramic volume loading for injection molding were determind. A good debinding technique was utilized to improve the quality of debinded parts and save the debinding time. The simple ceramic part was successfully sintered after debinding and its microstructure examined with SEM revealed good consolidation.

  • The purpose of this study was myokine product and role with physical activity and literature review. There is accumulating epidemiological evidence that a physically active life plays an independent role in the protection against type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, dementia and even depression. And myokine has been regarded an important factor of exercise training and brain growth factor for the prevention of Alzheimier's disease. During exercise the release of anti-inflammatory myokine from contracting muscle controled the metabolic response, and IL-4, IL-6, IL-7, IL-10, and IL-15 controled muscle hypertrophy, myogenesis and angiogenenesis. IL-6 promoted the lipid metabolism through AMPK activation. IL-1Ra, IL-10 and sTNF-R inhibited $TNF-{\alpha}$ as the pro-inflammatory cytokine. IL-15 increased the releasing volume from contracting muscle, and promoted the anabolic factor of muscle growth. IL-7 and IL-8 activated the angiogenesis through the more activation of C-X-C receptor signal transmission.

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the power changes in eletrocenphalogram (EEG) detected from the tibialis anterior muscle, during repetitive contraction exercise in normal female adults. Methods: The subjects of this study were 24 normal adult females, with no musculoskeletal or nervous system disorders. The 24 female subjects were divided into two groups: 12 subjects comprised a voluntary stimulation training group, and the other 12 subjects comprised an electrical stimulation training group. A total of thirty contractions were made repetitively by each woman, with maximal voluntary contraction exercise for six seconds, and a resting time of three seconds. During the experiment, their EEG was measured at eight positions. The eight positions were Fpz, Fz, Cz, CPz, C3, C4, P3, and P4, in accordance with the international 10~20 system. Results: The relative alpha power and beta power showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups. But the relative gamma power of the CPz, C3, C4, P3, and P4 areas showed statistically significant differences between the two groups (p<0.05). The relative theta power of the C4 area showed statistically significant differences between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our findings show that tibialis anterior muscle contraction by electrical stimulation and by voluntary repeated contraction differentially affected brain activation. In particular, the CPz, C3, C4, P3 positions of relative gamma power showed brain activation in voluntary contraction. The C4 position of relative theta power showed different brain activation between the two groups.
