  • Thermal transport from vertical heated surface to falling liquid film in a channel has been investigated experimentally. Air-flow is introduced into channel to make a counter flow against falling liquid film. This problem is of particular interest in the design of direct contact heat exchange system, such as cooling tower, evaporative cooling system, absorption cooling system, and distillation system. The effects of channel width and air flow rate on the heat transfer to falling liquid film are studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that heat transfer rate is gradually decreased with an increase in the channel width without air flow as well as with air flow in a channel. It is also found that heat transfer rate of air-flow is increased while heat transfer rate of falling liquid film is decreased with an increase in the air flow rate at a given channel width. However, total heat transfer rate from the heated surface is increased as the air flow rate is increased.

  • In the present study, a numerical investigation was conducted to analyze the effect of the distance between the adjacent injectors on the characteristics of flow structure, fuel penetration, and air/fuel mixing. Numerical results were validated with experimental data using a single injection. Subsequently, the same injector geometry and properties were applied on a non-reacting flow simulation with multiple injectors. Total pressure loss, penetration height, and mixing efficiency were compared with the distance between the injectors. The results showed that each injected gas merged into a single stream, resulting in the 2D-like flow fields under the condition of short distance and lower mixing efficiency along with higher total pressure loss. When the distance between the injectors increased, total pressure loss reduced and mixing efficiency increased due to the weakening of interactions between the injected gases.

  • In flip chip packaging, underfill process is used to fill epoxy bonder into the gap between a chip and a substrate in order to improve the reliability of electronic devices. Underfill process by capillary motion can give rise to unwanted air void formations since the arrangement of solder bumps affects the interfacial dynamics of flow meniscus. In this paper, the unsteady flows in the capillary underfill process are visualized and then the racing effect and merging of the meniscus are investigated according to the arrangement of solder bumps. The result is shown that at higher bump density, the fluid flow perpendicular to the main direction of flow becomes stronger so that more air voids are formed. This phenomenon is more conspicuous at a staggered bump array than at a rectangular bump array.

  • An analytical model was developed by Sim to estimate the two-phase damping ratio for upward two-phase flow perpendicular to horizontal tube bundles. The parameters of two-phase flow, such as void fraction and pressure loss evaluated in the model, were calculated based on existing experimental formulations. However, it is necessary to implement a few improvements in the formulations for the case of tube bundles. For the purpose of the improved formulation, we need more information about the two-phase parameters, which can be found through experimental test. An experiment is performed with a typical normal square array of cylinders subjected to the two-phase flow of air-water in the tube bundles, to calculate the two-phase Euler number and the two-phase friction multiplier. The pitch-to-diameter ratio is 1.35 and the diameter of cylinder is 18mm. Pressure loss along the flow direction in the tube bundles is measured with a pressure transducer and data acquisition system to calculate the two-phase Euler number and the two-phase friction multiplier. The void fraction model by Feenstra et al. is used to estimate the void fraction of the two-phase flow in tube bundles. The experimental results of the two phase friction multiplier and two-phase Euler number for homogeneous and non-homogeneous two-phase flows are compared and evaluated against the analytical results given by Sim's model.

  • The effect of placing a worktable in a vertical laminar flow clean room is invesgiated by a numerical simulation. The model clean room is assumed to be a rectangular square of 2m*2m, in which a worktable of 0.8m long and 0.1m thick is located at 0.7m above the floor. Major parameters are the horizontal position of the table and the inlet flow velocity. The flow is assumed to be laminar throughout the clean room. Navier-Stokes equations with the pressure terms are directly solved by the SIMPLE algorithm. Boundary conditions at the two exits are given in terms of pressure conditions. The flow pattern, pressure loss due to viscous friction, the ratio of flow rates through each exit and pressure imbalance at the exits are calculated. All of the flow characteristics are seen to vary substantially with the location of the table, but are quite insensitive to the inlet flow velocity(Reynolds number). As an example, the flow rate through each exit can very by as much as 30% depending on the location of the table.

  • This experimental study was carried out to examine the heat transfer characteristics of a 2-dimensional impinging air jet on a flat plate with a set of square rods. The objectives of the study were to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics caused by the square rods. Experiment was carried out first without using the rods to establish the baseline heat transfer performance. Then, rods of different widths and clearances were installed to cause the turbulence on the fluid flow. When rods are installed in front of the plate, the acceleration of the flow and the turbulence generation due to the rods and reattachment of the flow seem to contribute to the observed heat transfer augmentation and the heat transfer augmentation increases as the clearance decreases. With wider individual rod the heat transfer coefficient is higher, which is due to the increased acceleration and development of the eddies just before the rods.

  • Steady and unsteady numerical simulations are conducted for the comparison with the experiments performed to investigate the ram accelerator flow field by using an expansion tube facility in Stanford University. Wavier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flows are analyzed by fully implicit and time accurate numerical methods with Jachimowski's detailed chemistry model for hydrogen-air combustion involving 9 species and 19 reaction steps. Although the steady state numerical simulation shows a good agreement with the experimental schlieren and OH PLIF images for the case of $2H_2$$O_2$$17N_2$ fails in reproducing the combustion region behind the shock intersection point shown in the case of $2H_2$$O_2$$12N_2$ mixture. Therefore, an unsteady numerical simulation is conducted for this case and the result shows all the detailed flow stabilization process. From the result of unsteady numerical simulation, the experimental result seems to be an instantaneous state during the flow stabilization process. The combustion behind the shock intersection point is the result of a normal detonation formed by the intersection of strong oblique shocks that exist at early stage of the stabilization process. At final stage, the combustion region behind the shock intersection point disappears and the steady state result is retained. The time required for stabilization of the reacting flow in the model ram accelerator is found to be very long in comparison with the experimental test time.

  • This Paper deals with the experimental study of the axisymmetric air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface with and without swirl. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of flow, augmentation of heat transfer rate, turbulent intensity, and the comparison of heat transfer rate, the optimal swirling condition about the swirl and nonswirl axisymmetric air jet. In order to augment the heat transfer on the flat heating surface without introducing any additional power, the technique used in the present work was placement of twisted tape inserted pipe in front of the nozzle exit in order to make a swirl. The effect of swirl degree is investigated in case of S=0., 0.056, 0.111, 0.222 and the velocity of the jet was 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44m/s. The distance between the nozle exit and the stagnation point on the impinging plate was the H/D=$1{\sim}14$. In order to analyze of the flow structure which increase heat transfer, the velocity and the turbulent intensity of the axisymmetric jet was measured by a hot wire anemometer according to the swirl number and H/D.

  • The interpretation on the diffusion of radiation contaminants in air is usually to apply a Gaussian plume equation that obtains normal distributions in stable air flow conditions to draw a conservative conclusion. In this study, a numerical study using computational fluid dynamics methods was performed to interpret the air flow pattern and the diffusion of the radiation contaminants at the Wolseong nuclear power plants, and a more detailed solution can be obtained than the Gaussian plume equation, which is difficult to use to simulate complex terrains. The results show that a significant fluctuation of air flow in the terrain appears in the case of a northwester and southeaster because of the mountain located in the northwest and the sea located in the south-east. The northwesterly air flow shows the most unstable flow in the vertical direction when it passes over the terrain of mountain. The stable southeasterly air flow enters into the nuclear power plant from the sea, but it becomes unstable rapidly because of the interference by the building and the terrain. On the other hand, in the case of a northeaster and southwester, a small interruption of air flow is caused by the terrain and wake behind the buildings of nuclear power plants.

  • In this paper, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics that vary depending on the rotation axial distance between the upper and lower rotor, which is one of the design parameters of the coaxial rotor, is analyzed in the hovering condition using the computational fluid dynamics. Aerodynamic analysis using the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation and the aeroacoustic analysis using the Ffowcs Williams ans Hawkings equation is performed and the results were compared. The upper and lower rotor of the coaxial rotor have different phase angle which changes periodically by rotation and have unsteady characteristics. As the distance between the upper and lower rotors increased, the aerodynamic efficiency of the thrust and the torque was increased as the flow interaction decreased. In the aeroacoustic viewpoint, the noise characteristics radiated in the direction of the rotational plane showed little effect by axis spacing. In the vertical downward direction of the axis increased, the SPL maintains its size as the frequency increases, which affects the increase in the OASPL. As the axial distance of the coaxial rotor increased, the noise characteristics of a coaxial rotor were similar with the single rotor and the SPL decreased significantly.
