  • Vertices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. Most of investigations, however, are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LIF technique are discussed fur the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • CTD and current observation were taken to investigate the structure of the cold water in the Western Channel of the Korea Strait in October 1993. Thickness of the cold water in the deep trough of the strait changes from 20 m to 70 m according to the water depth. Thermocline between the Tsushima Warm Water and the cold water deepens from north to south with 0.00057 in slope. Temporal variation of the thickness appears to be related with the tidal current. The maximum variation is 20 m for 48 hours. Mean velocity of the cold water for 72 hours is 17 cm/sec southward. A simple model was used to understand dynamically the southward flow of the cold water and the return flow at the upper part in the lower layer. Calculated maximum southward flow and eddy viscosity coefficient are 7 cm/sec and 0.038 $m^2$/sec respectively in the model. Southward transport is $0.032$\times$10^6㎥/sec$ at the northern part in the trough and decreases from north to south due to the presence of the return flow. Southward transport increases with the increase in the upper layer transport but is not affected by the density of the upper layer or the interface slope.

  • Permeation grouting effectively enhances soil strength and decreases permeability of soil; however, the flow of grout is heavily affected by anisotropy of hydraulic conductivity in layers. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of permeability anisotropy on the effective radius of horizontal permeation grout using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We modeled the horizontal permeation grout flow as a two-phase viscous fluid flow in porous media, and the model incorporated the chemical diffusion and the viscosity variation due to hardening. The numerical simulation reveals that the permeability anisotropy shapes the grout bulb to be elliptic and the dissolution-driven diffusion causes a gradual change in grout pore saturation at the edge of the grout bulb. For the grout pore saturations of 10%, 50% and 90%, the horizontal and vertical radii of grout bulb are estimated when the horizontal-to-vertical permeability ratio varies from 0.01 to 100, and the predictive model equations are suggested. This result contributes to more efficient design of injection strategy in formation layers with permeability anisotropy.

  • The multiphase simulation of a liquid jet in a lab-scale ramjet combustor with a plain orifice type injector was studied with a commercial CFD tool, a FLUENT program. The objectives of the current study are to analysis the breakup characteristics of a hexane liquid jet in a cross flow and to derive the correlation between flow conditions and drag force coefficients in a test section. From the result of a numerical simulation, we concluded that a DPM and Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model with an enhanced wall treatment were available to simulate the multiphase flow simulation. And the calculated distribution of a hexane vapor concentration was well-matched with experimental results.

  • The study of nonlinear gas transport in rarefied condition or associated with the microscale length of the geometry has emerged as an interesting topic in recent years. Along with the DSMC method, several fluid dynamic models that come under the general category of the moment method or the Chapman-Enskog method have been used for this type of problem. In the present study, on the basis of Eu's generalized hydrodynamics, computational models for diatomic gases are developed. The rotational nonequilibrium effect is included by introducing excess normal stress associated with the bulk viscosity of the gas. The new models are applied to study the one-dimensional shock structure and the multi-dimensional rarefied hypersonic flow about a blunt body. The results indicate that the bulk viscosity plays a considerable role in fundamental flow problems such as the shock structure and shear flow. An excellent agreement with experiment is observed for the inverse shock density thickness.

  • Aircraft fuel efficiency is one of main concerns to aircraft manufacturers and to aviation companies because jet fuel price has tripled in last ten years. One of simple and effective methods to increase fuel efficiency is to reduce aircraft induced drag by using of wingtip devices. Induced drag is closely related to the circulation distribution, which produces strong wingtip vortex behind the tip of a finite wing. Wingtip devices including winglets can be successfully applied to reduce induced drag by wingtip vortex mitigation. Winglet design, however, is very complicated process and has to consider many parameters including installation position, height, taper ratio, sweepback, airfoil, toe-out angle and cant angle of winglets. In current research, different shapes of winglets are compared in the view of vortex mitigation. Appropriately designed winglets are proved to mitigate wingtip vortex and to increase lift to drag ratio. Also, the results show that winglets are more efficient than wingtip extension. That is the reason B-747-400 and B-737-800 chose winglets instead of a span increase to increase payload and range. Drag polar comparison chart is presented to show that minimum drag is increased by viscous drag of winglet, but at high lift, total drag is reduced by induced drag decrease. So, winglets are more efficient for aircraft that cruises at a high lift condition, which generates very strong wingtip vortex.

  • An accurate analysis procedure to solve the flow about a flat plate at various incidences has been developed. The Navier-Stokes equations of stream function and vorticity form are solved in a sufficiently large computational domain, in which the grid lines are mutually orthogonal. The details of the flow near the singularity at the tip of the plate is well captured by the analytic solution which is asymptotically matched to the numerically generated outer solution. The solution for each region is obtained iteratively : the solution of one (inner or outer) region uses that of the other as the boundary condition after each cycle. The resulting procedure is accurate everywhere and also computationally efficient as the singularity has been removed. It is applied to the flat plate for a wide range of Re : the results agree very well with the existing computation and experiment.

  • Vertical structures of wind-driven and tidal currents in a rectangular shaped uniform-depth basin of homogeneous water have been investigated using a mode-splitted, multi-level grid-box, hydrodynamic numerical model. The model was verified using analytical solutions for various vertical eddy viscosity profiles such as: a constant eddy viscosity, a linearly decreasing or increasing variation with depth, a quadratic variation with depth and an exponential variation with depth. Particular attention has been paid on the effects of "near-surface wall layer" on vertical shear of velocity. In numerical calculations, the whole water depth was divided into 13 levels with an unequal grid spacing. the model satisfactorily reproduces the velocity profile, but in case the eddy viscosity decreases rapidly with depth as in quadratical or exponential variation with depth, the vertical gradient of velocity near the bottom became very steep, and analytical solutions and numerical results showed some discrepancy. The vertical structures of horizontal velocity vary with both the depth-averaged value of eddy viscosity and its profiles. the velocity near the sea surface and near the bottom responded sensitively to the eddy viscosity of wall layer. For wind-driven current, the strong velocity shear was generated near the sea surface as eddy viscosity near the surface became small. For tidal current, the velocity above the sea bottom layer was almost constant regardless of the profiles of vertical eddy viscosity, but velocity in the sea bottom layer showed strong shear as eddy viscosity became small.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the laminated rubber bearings (LRBs) for the seismic isolation. The evaluations of the proposed equations of the LRB horizontal stiffness are carried out and these equations are extended to the visco-elastic problems to investigate the damping amplifications of LRBs. The stability evaluation of LRBs is also performed. For investigation of the dynamic characteristics of LRBs, the horizontal stiffness equations of the LRBs considering the P-delta effects are applied to the modeling of a seismically isolated structure and the earthquake response time history analyses are carried out. From this research, the proposed simple equation of the horizontal stiffness of LRB is so useful for the design loads and easily extended to the visco-elastic problems. Through the stability evaluation of LRB, the increasing ratio of the total rubber thickness of the LRB severely decrecises the bucking load than the increasing ratio of unit rubber thickness. From the comparison of the dynamic shear deflection of LRB, the analysis results are in good agreement with those of the experiments.
