  • Dendrite boundaries and γ/γ' structure of a second generation single crystalline superalloy CMSX-4 almost disappeared during solution treatment above 1310℃. γ' size in the dendrite core was uniform and fine, however, that in the interdendritic region was coarse and nonuniform. With increasing solutionizing temperature and time, γ' size in the interdednritic region became fine and segregation of alloying elements between dendrite core and interdendritic region diminished. Segregation of solid solution strengthening elements such as W, Co, Re in the dendrite core was not fully removed through the heat treatments, especially that of Re still remained to some extent. Tensile properties at room temperature at which does not cause precipitaion of harmful phases, were improved with increasing solutionizing temperature and time.

  • Eutectic composition phase with low melting point which solidifies at the final stage affects the solidification cracking at the intercellular or interdendritic area of welds and castings. If sufficient amount of eutectic composition liquid does not exist between the solidifying phases, the discontinuities remain as cracks. However, abundant amount of liquid eutectic composition existing in the final stage can flow into the discontinuities easily and heal the cracks. By flowing of liquid eutectic and healing of discontinuities, the possibility of cracking can be reduced when the amount of eutectic liquid is sufficient. For the solidification of pure metals, liquid eutectic does not exist and the interlocking of growing solid phases can be realized without interruption of liquid film. Therefore there is little possibility of solidification cracking in the case of welds and castings of pure metal. In a practical sense, the effective way to reduce or prevent the solidification cracking is making the composition of molten pool or melts near to the eutectic composition.

  • Creep properties of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy CM247LC under various temperature and stress conditions have been investigated. In the heat-treated specimen, some portion of eutectic γ-γ' remained, and uniform cubic γ' was observed in the dendrites. At low temperature (750℃) and high stress condition, a large amount of deformation occurred during the primary creep, while the tertiary creep region accounted for most of the creep deformation under high temperature and low stress condition. γ' particles are sheared by dislocation dissociated into super lattice partial dislocations separated by stacking faults at 750℃. No stacking faults in γ' were found at and above 850℃ due to the temperature dependence of the stacking fault energy. Raft structure of γ' was found after creep test at high temperature of 950℃ and 1000℃. At 850℃, the deformation mechanism was shown to be dependent on the stress condition, and so rafting was observed only under low stress condition.
