The Effect of Dispersion Medium on Intensity of Volatile Flavor Components and Recovery of Essential Oil from Capsella bursa-pastoris by Steam Distillation (수증기 증류시 분산매의 조성이 냉이의 휘발성 향기성분의 강도 및 정유 회수율에 미치는 영향)

  • Along with the increased necessity for an efficient utilization of Korean wild edible plants growing in fields and mountains, attempts were made to investigate the patterns of flavor changes accompanied hy various conditions of dispersion medium. The effect of various pH values and concentration of sucrose or NaCl of dispersion medium on volatile flavor patterns was investigated to evaluate the applicability of flavor components extracted from Capsella bursa-pastoris for food industry. Essential oils from this wild plant were isolated by simultaneous steam distillation-extraction (SDE) method using diethyl ether as solvent. Concentrated samples were analyzed s chromatography (GC) and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Most volatile flavor components of Capsella bursa-pastoris showed good recovery when steam distilled at pH 7 by SDE method. Increasing concentration of sucrose and 15% by NaCl, resulted in greater numbers of identified flavor components from Capsella bursa-pastoris.

Study on the Change of Strength and Water Vapour Diffusion Resistant of Stone by Soluble Salt (수용성 염에 의한 암석의 강도와 수증기확산저항도 변화에 관한 연구)

  • The change of strength and water vapour diffusion resistant by soluble salts was investigated in the tuff and granite used in many stone monuments of Gyeongju area. With $Na_2SO_4$ and $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ were treated the rock samples to understand the difference of solubility. The densities of the tested rocks were increased by the impregnation of $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ and $Na_2SO_4$. The flexural strength was increased in the tuff samples but decreased in the granite as the salts increased in the pore. In the tuff, the uniaxial compressive strength was increased by $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$, but decreased by $Na_2SO_4$. In the granite, it was decreased slightly by $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$, but increased by $Na_2SO_4$. The water vapour diffusion resistant was increased by the salts in both rocks. As results, it was cleared that the mechanical strength colud be increased in early stage of weathering by the accumulation of salt and water vapour diffusion resistant.

Comparison between Total Least Squares and Ordinary Least Squares for Linear Relationship of Stable Water Isotopes (완전최소자승법과 보통최소자승법을 이용한 물안정동위원소의 선형관계식 비교)

  • A linear relationship between two stable water isotopes, oxygen and hydrogen, has been used to understand the water cycle as a basic tool. A slope and intercept from the linear relationship indicates what kind of physical processes occur during movement of water. Traditionally, ordinary least squares (OLS) method has been utilized for the linear relationship, but total least squares (TLS) method provides more accurate slope and intercept theoretically because isotopic compositions of both oxygen and hydrogen have uncertainties. In this work, OLS and TLS were compared with isotopic compositions of snow and snowmelt collected from the King Sejong Station, Antarctica and isotopic compositions of water vapor observed by Lee et al. (2013) in the western part of Korea. The slopes from the linear relationship of isotopic compositions of snow and snowmelt at the King Sejong Station were estimated to be 7.00 (OLS) and 7.16(TLS) and the slopes of stable water vapor isotopes were 7.75(OLS) and 7.87(TLS). There was a melting process in the snow near the King Sejong Station and the water vapor was directly transported from the ocean to the study area based on the slope calculations. There is no significant difference in two slopes to interpret the physical processes. However, it is necessary to evaluate the slope differences from the two methods for studies for example, groundwater recharge processes, using the absolute slope values.

Physical Properties of Mixed ${\kappa}/{\lamda}$- and ${\kappa}/{\iota}$-carrageenan Films ((${\kappa}/{\lambda}$${\kappa}/{\iota}$-carrageenan 혼합 필름의 물성)

  • The physical properties of ${\kappa}/{\lamda}$- and ${\kappa}/{\iota}$-carrageenan films, mixed with ${\lamda}$- or ${\iota}$-carrageenan (${\kappa}:{\lamda}$ or ${\kappa}:{\iota}$ = 2:1, 1.5:1.5, 1.2:1.8) and with polyethylene glycol, were compared to those of ${\kappa}$-, ${\lamda}$-, or ${\iota}$-carrageenan films. The tensile strengths of the ${\kappa}/{\lamda}$- and ${\kappa}/{\iota}$-carrageenan films decreased with increasing mixing ratios of ${\kappa}/{\lamda}$- or ${\kappa}/{\iota}$-carrageenan, respectively, and were lower than those of the ${\lamda}$- and ${\iota}$-carrageenan films. The elongations and water vapor permeabilities of the ${\kappa}/{\lamda}$- and ${\kappa}/{\iota}$-carrageenan films increased with increasing mixing ratios of ${\lamda}$- and ${\iota}$-carrageenan, respectively, and were higher than those of the ${\lamda}$- or ${\iota}$-carrageenan films.

A Kinetic Study of Steam Gasification of Woodchip, Sawdust and Lignite (나무칩, 톱밥 바이오매스와 갈탄의 수증기 가스화반응 특성 연구)

  • Biomass and low-grade coals are known to be better potential sources of energy compared to crude oil and natural gas since these materials are readily available and found to have large reserves, respectively. Gasification of these carbonaceous materials produced syngas for chemical synthesis and power generation. Woodchip, sawdust and lignite were gasified with steam in a thermobalance reactor under atmospheric pressure in order to evaluate their kinetic rate information. The effects of gasification temperature ($600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure of steam (20~90 kPa) on the gasification rate were investigated. The three different types of gas-solid reaction models were applied to the experimental data to predict the behavior of the gasification reactions. The modified volumetric model predicted the conversion data well, thus the model was used to evaluate kinetic parameters in this study. The observed activation energy of biomass, sawdust and lignite gasification reactions were found to be in reasonable range and their rank was found to be sawdust > woodchip > lignite. The expression of apparent reaction rates for steam gasification of the three solids was proposed to provide basic information on the design of coal gasification processes.

  • 수소의 소규모 분산 생산 기술은 본격 적 인 수소 인프라가 도입되기 전에 연료전지 자동차의 수소 충전용이나 분산 발전형 연료전지의 수소 공급을 위해 필요하다. 생산 용량은 수소 기준으로 $20{\sim}100 Nm^3/hr$ 정도로 현재로선 천연가스의 수증기 개 질법이 가장 경제적인 공정으로 알려져 있다. 소규모 생산에 따른 열효율 저하를 줄이 기 위해 단위 공정들이 통합된 컴팩트 개질 시스템의 개발이 필요하다. 연료전지 자동차용 수소 인프라 조기 구축을 위하여 수소충전소 구축과 국산화 천연가스 수증기 개질기 개발을 병행하여 진행하였다. 수소 충전소 구축 부분은 충전소 부지 확보, 건물 건축, 각종 유틸리 티 설치의 토목 부분과 천연가스 개질형 수소 제조 유닛 설치, 수소 압축, 저장, 디스펜싱 시스템 설치를 포함하고 있으며 고압 설비에 대한 인허가 대응 및 안전대책 작업도 진행하였다. 구축된 수소충전소는 향후 연료전지 자동차 연계 실증 프로그램에 활용할 수 있다. 국산화 핵심 기술 개발을 위하여 열 및 시스템 통합 설계에 의 해 천연가스 수증기 개질기를 제작하고 내부 열교환 구조에 따른 개질기의 성능을 평가하였다. 개발된 개질기는 개질온도 $720^{\circ}C$, 수증기 대 카본 비 2.7의 운전조건에서 $23Nm^3/h$ 이상의 수소 생산이 가능하였으며 73% 이상의 개질 효율을 나타내었다. 개발된 천연가스 수증기 개질기는 향후 수소 정제용 PSA(Pressure Swing Adsorption) 시스템과 연계하여 수소충전소 국산화 엔지니어링 설계 패키지 개발의 핵심 기 술로 사용할 계획이다.시간 정도 운전한 후 시스템을 정지하였다 메탄 전환율과 일산화 탄소 농도, 열효율을 모니터링 하고 있으며, 현재까지 초기 성능을 그대로 유지하고 있다. 앞으로 일일시동-정지 운전 시험을 지속하면서 초기 시동 특성 및 부하 변동에 따른 응답 특성 개선, 그리고 연료전지와의 연계 운전을 실시할 예정이다 한다. 단위 전지 운전 온도 $130^{\circ}C$, 상대습도 37%의 운전 조건에서도 상당히 우수한 전지 성능을 보임에 따라 고온/저가습 조건에서 상용 Nafion 112 막보다 우수한 막 특성을 나타냄을 확인하였다.소/배후방사능비는 각각 $2.18{\pm}0.03,\;2.56{\pm}0.11,\;3.08{\pm}0.18,\;3.77{\pm}0.17,\;4.70{\pm}0.45$ 그리고 $5.59{\pm}0.40$이었고, $^{67}Ga$-citrate의 경우 2시간, 24시간, 48시간에 $3.06{\pm}0.84,\;4.12{\pm}0.54\;4.55{\pm}0.74 $이었다. 결론 : Transferrin에 $^{99m}Tc$을 이용한 방사성표지가 성공적으로 이루어졌고, $^{99m}Tc$-transferrin의 표지효율은 8시간까지 95% 이상의 안정된 방사성표지효율을 보였다. $^{99m}Tc$-transferrin을 이용한 감염영상을 성공적으로 얻을 수 있었으며, $^{67}Ga$-citrate 영상과 비교하여 더 빠른 시간 안에 우수한 영상을 얻을 수 있었다. 그러므로 $^{

Relationship between gross primary production and environmental variables during drought season in South Korea (가뭄 기간 총일차생산량과 환경 변수 간 상관관계 분석)

  • Water stress and environmental drivers are important factors to explain the variance of gross primary production (GPP). Environmental drivers are used to generate GPP in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) algorithm and process-based model. However, MODIS algorithm only consider the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) data while the process-based biogeochemical model also uses limited data to express water stress. We compared the relationship between environmental drivers and GPP from eddy covariance method, MODIS algorithm, and Community Land Model 4 (CLM 4) simulation in normal years and drought years. To consider water stress specifically, we used VPD and evaporative fraction (EF). We evaluated the effects from environmental drivers and EF towards GPP products using the structural equation modeling (SEM) in South Korea. We found that GPP products from MODIS algorithm and model simulation results were not restricted from VPD data if VPD was underestimated. We also found that in the cropland area, irrigation effects can relieve VPD effects to GPP. However, GPP products derived from MODIS and CLM 4 had limitation to explain the irrigation effects to GPP. Overall, these results will enhance the understanding of GPP products derived from MODIS and CLM 4.

Interpretation of volcanic eruption types from granulometry and component analyses of the Maljandeung tuff, Ulleung Island, Korea (울릉도 말잔등응회암의 입도와 구성원 분석으로부터 화산분화 유형 해석)

  • We have carried out granulometry and component analysis on pyroclastic deposits of the Maljandeung Tuff, Ulleung Island, to interpret the eruption types and prime dynamic mechanisms. It is divided into three members in the extracaldera area, each of which comprises the lithofacies of coarse tuffs and lapillistones in the lower part, and pumice deposits in upper one. The lithofacies present quantitative evidences in the granularity and component distribution patterns. As compared to the pumice deposits, the coarse tuffs and lapillistones exhibit a relative increase in both the lithic/juvenile and the crystal/juvenile ratios, and a preferential fragmentation of the juvenile fraction. The abundance of lithics and crystals in the tuffs and lapillistones can be attributed to preferential fragmentation of the aquifer-hosting rocks due to explosive evaporation of ground water, and indirect enrichment in lithics and crystals due to removal of juvenile fines from eruptive cloud. The above data exhibit that early phreatopmagmatic phase was followed by purely magmatic fragmentation phases. The coarse tuffs and lapillistones suggest phreatoplinian eruption derived from explosive interaction of magma with ground water near the conduit, while pumice deposits indicate magmatic eruption by magmatic explosion from juvenile gas pressure. In early stage, phreatoplinian eruption occurred from explosive magma/water interaction in connecting confining water with drawdown of the magma column in the conduit; Later it shifted to plinian eruption by explosive expansion of only magmatic volatiles in intercepting water influx due to higher magmatic gas pressure than confining water pressure with rising of the magma column in the conduit.

Research Trends of Ni-based Catalysts on Steam Reforming of Bio-oils for H2 Production: A Review (수소 생산을 위한 바이오오일 수증기 개질 반응에서의 니켈계 촉매 연구동향)

  • Hydrogen has been gaining a lot of attention as a possible clean energy source that can aid in reaching carbon neutrality. Currently, hydrogen production has relied on the steam reforming of fossil fuels. However, due to the carbon dioxide emissions caused by this process, hydrogen production based on the steam reforming of bio-oil derived from biomass has been proposed as an alternative approach. In order to use this alternative approach efficiently, one of the key issues that must be overcome is that the complexity of bio-oil, which has a large molecular weight and diverse functional groups of hydrocarbons, promotes the catalytic deactivation of nickel-based catalysts. In this review, research efforts to improve nickel-based catalysts for the steam reforming of bio-oil have been discussed in terms of the active phase, support, and promoters. The active phases are involved in activating C-C and C-H bonds of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, and noble and transition metals can be utilized. In terms of the support and promoters, the catalytic deactivation of Ni-based catalysts can be inhibited by utilizing reactive lattice oxygen for support or by suppressing the acidity. The development of active and stable Ni-based reforming catalysts plays a critical role in clean hydrogen production based on bio-oils.

GOCI-II Capability of Improving the Accuracy of Ocean Color Products through Fusion with GK-2A/AMI (GK-2A/AMI와 융합을 통한 GOCI-II 해색 산출물 정확도 개선 가능성)

  • Satellite-derived ocean color products are required to effectively monitor clear open ocean and coastal water regions for various research fields. For this purpose, accurate correction of atmospheric effect is essential. Currently, the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI)-II ground segment uses the reanalysis of meteorological fields such as European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) or National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) to correct gas absorption by water vapor and ozone. In this process, uncertainties may occur due to the low spatiotemporal resolution of the meteorological data. In this study, we develop water vapor absorption correction model for the GK-2 combined GOCI-II atmospheric correction using Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) total precipitable water (TPW) information through radiative transfer model simulations. Also, we investigate the impact of the developed model on GOCI products. Overall, the errors with and without water vapor absorption correction in the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance at 620 nm and 680 nm are only 1.3% and 0.27%, indicating that there is no significant effect by the water vapor absorption model. However, the GK-2A combined water vapor absorption model has the large impacts at the 709 nm channel, as revealing error of 6 to 15% depending on the solar zenith angle and the TPW. We also found more significant impacts of the GK-2 combined water vapor absorption model on Rayleigh-corrected reflectance at all GOCI-II spectral bands. The errors generated from the TOA reflectance is greatly amplified, showing a large error of 1.46~4.98, 7.53~19.53, 0.25~0.64, 14.74~40.5, 8.2~18.56, 5.7~11.9% for from 620 nm to 865 nm, repectively, depending on the SZA. This study emphasizes the water vapor correction model can affect the accuracy and stability of ocean color products, and implies that the accuracy of GOCI-II ocean color products can be improved through fusion with GK-2A/AMI.
