  • Experimental study on characteristics of direct contact condensation of steam discharged into a sub-cooled water pool has been performed using five different sizes of horizontal nozzle over a wide range of steam mass fluxes and pool temperatures. Steam condensation phenomena have been observed visually and by taking pictures of steam jets using a high speed video camera. Two different steam jet shapes such as ellipsoidal shape and conical shape were typically observed for a stable steam jet, depending on the steam mass flux and pool temperature. The steam jet expansion ratio and the steam jet length as well as the condensation heat transfer coefficients were determined. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter on these parameters were also discussed. Empirical correlations for the steam jet lengths and the condensation heat transfer coefficients as a function of steam mass flux and condensation driving potential were established. The axial and radial temperature distributions in steam jet and in surrounding water were measured. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter were also discussed. The condensation regime map, which consists of six regimes such as chugging, transient chugging, condensation oscillation, stable condensation, bubble condensation oscillation, and intermittent oscillation condensation, were established. In addition, the dynamic pressures at the pool wall were measured. The close relation of dynamic pressure and steam condensation mode, which is also dependent on steam mass flux and pool temperature, was found.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the Cherepnov water lifter that can pump or lift water without the use of external energy such as electricity. The energy used by the lifter is derived from the potential energy of the water itself. The liffter consists of three interconnected tanks, one of which is open and two others are hermetically sealed. The water level and the pressure in each tank were measured to improve the undestanding of the behavior and the operational charateristics of the lifter. The effects of varying operating parameters such as the inflow rate, tank and pipe sizes, the relative positions of the tanks were analyzed. As a results, factors that can maximize the efficiency, shorten the cycle time and increase the delivery rate were identified.

  • Based on the linear potential theory with the side wall reflection. the directional spectrum waves are numerically simulated by a source distribution method and these together with long-crested irregular waves are also generated at the towing tank of Pusan National University by considering the transfer function of the wave maker obtained from the regular waves. In the numerical simulation, the characteristics of the directional spreading function are investigated by changing the breadth of the wave-maker unit. the width of the towing tank and the wave period. In the experimental generation, the statistical properties and the power spectrums of the long-crested irregular and directional waves are compared along the towing tank length. The directional spreading functions are also investigated at various positions in the tank.

  • An experimental study on thermal mixing of steam jet condensation through the I-Sparger of APR1400 design using B&C (Blowdown and Condensation) test facility. Due to the limit of the steam supply capability of the pressurizer, transient thermal mixing experiments were conducted. Temperature distributions in the quench tank were measured using thermocouples located at various positions. From the experimental data, local temperature variations for various locations and vertically cross-sectional temperature distributions for several times were depicted and presented. The result shows the characteristics of thermal mixing of the I-Sparger depending on the design features of the I-Sparger.

  • In the advanced nuclear power plants including APR1400, the SDVS (Safety Depressurization and Vent System) is adopted to increase the plant safety using the concept of feed-and-bleed operation. In the case of the TLOFW (Total Loss of Feedwater), the POSRV (Power Operated Safety Relief Value) located at the top of the pressurizer is expected to open due to the pressurization of the reactor coolant system and discharges steam and/or water mixture into the water pool, where the mixture is condensed. During the condensation of the mixture, thermal-hydraulic loads such as pressure and temperature variations are induced to the pool structure. For the pool structure design, such thermal-hydraulic aspects should be considered. Understanding the phenomena of the submerged steam jet condensation in a water pool is helpful for system designers to design proper pool structure, sparger, and supports etc. This paper reviews and evaluates the steam jet condensation in a water pool on the physical phenomena of the steam condensation including condensation regime map, heat transfer coefficient, steam plume, steam jet condensation load, and steam jet induced flow.

  • This study develops 2-D analysis method of a base-isolated pool structure, and verifies the method through shaking table test using a scaled model. A wall of the pool structure is modeled as lumped mass, and added mass of the fluid is imposed on the nodes of the structure to consider the hydrodynamic effect of contained fluid. The equation of motion of base-isolated pool structure is obtained by coupling of two equations for superstructure composed of wall and fluid, and for bottom slab and isolator. The scaled model for shaking table test is made with transparent acryle, and 4-high damping laminated rubber bearings are used. The responses of the scaled model by the test are generally good agreement with those by the analysis. It is shown that 2-D analysis method gives somewhat conservative results.
