Probability of Pipe Breakage for Pipe Network with Surge Tank regarding Unsteady Effect (부정류 효과를 고려한 조압수조가 있는 상수관망의 파괴확률)

  • Numerical model which can simulate the surge tank for unsteady flow was developed in the present study. Furthermore, reliability model which can calculate the probability of pipe breakage regarding unsteady effect was developed. For the risk estimation of pipe breakage and functional estimation of surge tank, probability of pipe breakage for pipe network with surge tank was calculated regarding unsteady effect. From the results, it was found that unsteady flow significantly increase the probability of pipe breakage and surge tank considerably decrease probability of pipe breakage as damping out the pressure oscillations.

Design of Tidal Basin Using Automatically Controlled Manifold System (분기관의 자동제어를 통한 조석수조의 설계)

  • The manifold designates a pipe system discharging or absorbing water through multiple holes installed along the finite length of the pipe. The proper design of the manifold requires the pre-analysis of the hydraulic characteristics such as system head and flow rate. head loss and hole discharges, etc. On the contrary to the general pipe systems. the head loss along the pipe is hardly quantified in an explicit way since it is complicately varied by the size and arrangement of the holes. In the present study, both energy and continuity equations are employed to analyze the hydraulic characteristics, constituting nonlinear simultaneous equations which are solved by Newton method. In addition, a hydraulic experiment utilizing the manifold system equipped with an automatically controlled valve is performed to reproduce model tide. The result shows that the manifold system can be effectively used in a tidal basin where water flow should be maintained uniformly over the basin width.

Determination of Surge Tank Scale for Dam Safety Management (댐 안전관리를 위한 조압수조의 규모 결정)

  • Phenomena of hydraulic transient such as water hammer should be analyzed to design the pipeline systems effectively in dam. Surge tanks generally are used to reduce change in pressure caused by hydraulic transient from load changes on the turbines. In this study, the appropriate scale of surge tank with chamber is investigated for dam safety management. The variation of water level in the surge tank are computed using governing equation. Using the Thoma-Jaeger's stability condition, static and dynamic stability are investigate for the cases of flood water level, normal high water level, rated water level and low water level. Finally appropriate diameters of shaft and chamber are determined in the surge tank with chamber.

A Study on the Environmental Factors Affecting the Population of the Wintering Waterbirds in Wonju-Stream (원주천의 월동수조류 군집에 영향을 미치는 환경요인 연구)

  • In order to understand the environmental factors affecting the waterbird community in winter, we divided the watershed into 6 sections and investigated the size of the stream, the water quality, benthic invertebrates, and fish including birds. The influences on the community of water birds in Wonju stream were river structure, temperature and water quality. Among the structure of the river, the factors affecting the waterbird community in winter were the width of the stream and the width of the flowing water. The wider the width, the more species and the number of the winter waterbirds were. As the width of river water was wide, the smaller the width and width of the waterway, the fewer the population. The temperature changes of the wintering season affected the community of water birds because it led to freezing of rivers. The sections that were not frozen showed a significant increase and decrease in the temperature drop and rise. The values of pH, water temperature, COD, BOD, TN, TP and total E. coli increased with the increase of the downstream waterbirds population in the water quality survey. The water quality of S6 was affected by the downstream sewage treatment plant The number of wintering waterbirds was also highest. The effluent from the sewage treatment plant seems to have a considerable influence on the water quality. The increase of several items such as TN promotes the nutrition of the river, which leads to the accumulation of organic matter and the proliferation of aquatic organisms. This may be the cause of the increase in winter waterbirds as a food source. The benthic macroinvertebrate communities and fish communities did not show any correlation with the wintering water-birds communities.

Measurement of Crack Depth and Weathering Degree Using Ultrasonic Velocity and Deterioration Evaluation of the Unhyungung Stone Water Container (운현궁수조의 손상평가와 초음파 속도를 이용한 풍화도 및 균열심도 측정)

  • The Unhyungung Water Container in the possession of the Seoul Museum of History in Korea is consisted of a calcareous marble developed laminated bedding and numerous argillaceous veinlets. This monument should need to conservation treatment because of black discoloration and seriously numerous cracks. Vertical and horizontal cracks in the monument are developed following stratification and argillaceous veinlets that are relatively low coherence between the rock materials. We have proved that the material inducing discoloration on the surface is carbon which is formed by deposited organic matters. As the result of the ultrasonic measurements, although highly surface weathering degree, the physical properties of the Unhyungung Water Container is confirmed slightly weathered state. The depths of cracks in the monument are calculated at maximum 60mm in some cracks completely penetrating into the wall and at minimum 9mm in the other crack. The cracks, developed following veinlet, are revealed that there penetrate from an outer wall to an inside wall for the monument. And most depths of cracks, developed following stratification, are calculated 20 to 30mm. This result will offer a significant data for conservation of the Unhyungung Water Container.

서안경계류 발생역학을 이해하기 위한 실험 장치 및 방법 개발

  • Stommel(1948)은 서안경계류의 원인이 베타효과($\beta$-effect)라 일컫는 코리올리 파라미터(f)의 위도 변화 때문인 것을 밝혔다. 서안경계류는 고등학교나 대학 교양에서 중요하게 다뤄지고 있다. 학생들은 보통 이론 수업만으로 서안경계류의 발생 과정, 이에 관련된 코리올리 힘, 베타효과 등을 이해해야 한다. 때문에 서안경계류와 관련된 실험이 있다면 이를 이해하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것이다. 또한 연구에서 검토한 6종의 고등학교 지구과학 2 교과서는 서안경계류를 본문과 더불어 삽화로 설명하고 있다. 그러나 이 중 3종의 교과서 삽화에서는 서안경계류의 발생 원인을 코리올리 힘만으로 지적하고 있다. 따라서 일부 학생은 서안경계류의 원인을 코리올리 힘으로 오해 할 수 있다. 위와 같은 이유로 우리는 서안경계류가 코리올리 힘의 작용과 베타효과에 의해 나타나는 것을 쉽게 확인 할 수 있는 실험 장치와 다양한 실험 방법을 개발하였다. 개발한 실험 장치는 직육면체의 수조와 회전 속도를 조절할 수 있는 테이블로 구성된다. (Fig. 1) 이와 같은 회전수조는 대기와 해양의 움직임을 실험실에서 모사하기 위해 자주 사용되었다(Beardsely 1969, 소선섭 등 1995; 1997). 우리의 수조는 경사진 바닥과 평평한 바닥으로 두종류를 제작하였다. 바닥이 경사진 수조는 베타효과를 구현하기 위한 것이다. 반시계 방향으로 회전하는 테이블은 중위도 어떤 위도에 접하는 가상의 평면이 지구 자전에 의해 회전하는 것을 나타낸다. 그리고 수조 상부에는 회전원판을 물에 접하여 시계방향으로 회전시킨다. 회전원판은 북반구 중위도 해양에 작용하는 바람 응력을 나타낸다. 우리는 테이블의 회전유무와 바닥의 경사유무에 따라 4개 실험을 수행하였다(Table. 1). 각 실험에서 물을 채운 수조를 원판에 올려놓고, 회전원판을 작동시킨 후 20분 동안 그대로 두어 수조안의 미세규모의 운동을 최소화 시킨 후 잉크를 떨어뜨리고 관찰하였다. 그 결과 실험 SB_f1은 베타효과와 코리올리 힘이 존재하여 서쪽 경계에서 좁고 빠른 흐름을 만들고 수조의 중간 부근에서 경계를 벗어나 동쪽으로 향하고 있다. 이 모습은 실제 해양의 서안경계류의 분리 현상과 비슷하다. FB_f1은 코리올리 힘만 존재하여 서쪽 경계에서 좁고 빠른 순환과 경계를 벗어나 동쪽으로 분리되는 흐름이 나타나지 않으며 전반적으로 크게 회전하는 모습을 보인다. SB_f0은 바람의 응력만 존재하는 경우로 잉크가 확산하는 모습을 보이며 나선팔의 모양으로 회전하면서 넓게 퍼져나간다. FB_f0의 모양도 이와 비슷하게 나타난다. 실험 SB_f1과 FB_f1을 비교하여 서안경계류는 코리올리 힘의 위도변화 효과인 베타효과가 있을 때 발생한다는 것을 알 수 있다(Fig. 2). 이 결과는 "단순히 코리올리 효과에 의해 서안경계류가 발생한다"는 생각을 바꾸게 할 것이다. 덧붙여 서안경계류 분리와 수조 바닥의 경사의 관계를 살펴보기 위한 실험을 실시하였다. 경사가 더 급하면 ($\alpha=20^{\circ}$) 서쪽 경계를 벗어나는 지점이 좀 더 북쪽에 나타났다. 현재 서안경계류는 개발한 실험 장치와 방법을 학교 현장에 적용하여 그 교육적 활용 가치를 평가하는 연구를 진행하고 있다.

Growth Comparison of Juvenile Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai in Different Culture Systems in the West Coast of Korea (서해안에서 사육시스템 종류별 참전복 치패의 성장 비교)

  • Comparisons of growth and survival rate in different culture systems for juvenile abalone were determined in the West Coast of South Korea from June, 2000 to April, 2001. Daily growth rate reached at the maximum by $148.6{\pm}48.96\;{\mu}m/day$ with a stagnant system and at the minimum by $95.3{\pm}21.45\;{\mu}m/day$ with a sprinkler culture system. Survival rate of the juvenile abalone was significantly higher than that in sprinkler culture with a rotary culture (P<0.05). The highest survival rate was 50.0% in the rotary culture and 38.3% was observed in the stagnant culture system. The results from this study indicate that effective survival and growth rate could be predicted in the rotary culture system.

  • We investigated the effect of salinity decrease, food supply and color of the rearing tank on the growth and survival of Amphiprion polymnus larvae. White tanks had the highest survival rate, followed by transparency, black and blue tanks(P<0.05). The transparency tank had the best growth, followed by black tank, white and blue tanks(P<0.05). Daily food intakes of larvae with $5.1{\sim}10.0mm$ in total length were $36.8{\sim}429.3$ Artemia nauplii. When salinity was lowered 5 psu per week from 32 psu, all the larvae died under salinity condition 17 psu. In lowered 2 psu per 3 days, its all died at 16 psu.

The Background of the Formation of the Elevated Water Storage Tank Landscape in the Western Region of Jeju Island (제주도 서부 지역 고가수조 경관의 형성배경)

  • The elevated water storage tanks highly crowded in the western region in Jeju island is an important landmark of Jeju island. This study examines the reasons that the elevated water storage tanks appeared in a high density. After examination, this study found that the elevated water storage tanks formed under the influences of climate, hydrogeologic structure, soil, topography and land use. In particular, the elevated water storage tanks in Jeju are closely related to the crapping system with which water has to be supplied using sprinkler due to well drained soil and hydrogeological characteristics. The results of this study show that elevated water storage tank landscape in the western region of Jeju island is an agricultural landscape particularly made in the course of farmers' adaptation to the natural environment of Jeju island.
