  • The effects of aqueous extract and volatile substances of 2 Angelica plants on seed germination and seedling growth were investigated. The seed germination of Angelica gigas showed increase in proportion to increase in aqueous extract concentration of A. gigas, while that of Angelica acutiloba was reduced proportionally to the extract concentration. The seed germination of A. gigas and A. acutiloba treated with aqueous extract of A. acutiloba was inhibited. The seedling elongation of A. gigas and A. acutiloba was slightly increased at lower concentration of aqueous extract of A. gigas, whereas it was proportionally decreased at higher concentrations. The seedling elongation of 2 Angelica plants was decreased by the aqueous extract of A. acutiloba. The aqueous extract of A. acutiloba caused significant inhibition in seedling growth of 2 Angelica plants. The seed germination of Lactuca sativa was not affected by volatile substances emitted from 2 Angelica plants. The radicle elongation of L. sativa treated with volatile substances of 2 Angelica plants was inhibited slightly and it was not suppressed according to the concentration of volatile substances.

  • This study investigated the growth of five phytopathogenic fungi including Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Diaporthe citri, Phytophthora capsici and others according to different concentrations of water extract in order to provide reference data for developing environment-friendly agricultural materials using five native Fagaceae species including Quercus acuta, Quercus salicina, Quercus glauca, Quercus gilva and Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. As the concentration of aqueous extracts of Fagaceae increased according to donor plants, the mycelial growth of phytopathogens showed a decreasing tendency. Differences were found in the degree of inhibition according to types of donor plants and pathogenic fungi. Diaporthe citri, Phytophthora capsici, Pythium graminicola on the water extract of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii inhibited mycelial growth by 84% in 25% of the treatment group and by 87% in more than half of the treatment group. The water extract of Quercus acuta was found to have no inhibitory effect against the mycelial growth of Diaporthe citri. The aqueous extracts of Quercus salicina, Quercus glauca and Quercus gilva insignificantly inhibited mycelial growth by approximately 15%. The total phenolic content of receptor plants exhibiting antifungal activity was highest in Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii with a content of 22.32 mg/g phenols, followed by Quercus salicina with 8.32 mg/g, Quercus glauca with 6.83 mg/g, Quercus gilva with 5.95 mg/g, and Quercus acuta with 5.24 mg/g. The aqueous extracts of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii among the five Five Fagaceae Plants of were the most effective antifungal activity.

  • The study researched germination of the plants and growth of Fungus according to concentration of aqueous extracts in order to provide basic data for developing natural agricultural resources by using Persicaria longiseta. The seed germination of Amaranthus spinosus was inhibited at 25% P. longiseta extract, while Agrostis stolonifera ssp. palustris was not affected at all concentrations tested. Especially, the seed germination rate and fresh weight of Trifolium incarnatum at 20% P. blumei extract were higher than those of control plot. The early growth of most receptor plant seedlings was promoted at 25% and 50% of P. blumei extracts, but the radicle growth of all receptor plants was significantly inhibited at > 25% of P. longiseta extract. The response of receptor plants to P. longiseta extract was different according to the plant species and the plant parts. The growth of plant pathogenic fungus in PDA medium showed an increasing inhibition tendency with increasing concentrations of P. longiseta extract. Especially, P. longiseta extract showed the greatest antimicrobial activity against Phytophthora infestans, Phythium graminicola, and Pythium venterpoolii. The content of total phenolic compound in P. longiseta was higher in leaves (1082.3 mg/L) but lower in roots (228.6 mg/L) and stems (207.8 mg/L), which is an allelopathic chemical. As these results are summarized, P. longiseta have competitive advantage because they release phenolic compounds with allelopathic effect and affect on germination, growth and fungi growth on underground flora compared to native plants and they have eligibility for natural herbicide and germicide.

  • The growth of weeds and some other plants has been considered to be inhibited by sicklepod(Cassia tora L.) sharing the habitat. The study was conducted, for the first time, to propose that this phenomenon is not only due to competition for physical and nutritional conditions but also due to allelopathy. In addition, autotoxicity of sicklepod was examined. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Rice sheath length reduced progressively from 18 % to 36 % with increasing the concentration of treating aqueous extracts of sickle pod seeds, but rice germination was not affected. In contrast, radish hypocotyl length was not reduced by the aqueous extract treatment but radish germination was significantly reduced by 66 % at 1 : 10 and 1 : 5 treatment. 2. Total chlorophyll contents in rice seedling decreased from 50 % to 65 % by treatment of seed aqueous extracts diluted from 1 : 50 to 1 : 5 ratio. 3. Aqueous extracts of sicklepod leaves significantly reduced hypocotyl length and fresh weight in radish and germination in rice, but mung bean was slightly affected by aqueous extracts only in fresh weight. 4. Volatiles from fresh, immature seeds with husk reduced the radish germination and seedling growth and radish root growth appeared to be more sensitive to the exposure to volatiles from fresh immature seeds than both germination and hypocotyl growth. 5. Volatiles from sickepod leaves inhibited germination and growth of radish, rice and mung bean, and seedling growth was more sensitive to volatiles from leaves than germination. 6. Volatiles from sicklepod leaves reduced germination and radicle length of sicklepod itself. 7. Collectively, it is concluded that there are water-soluble and volatile substances responsible for allelopathy in sicklepod.

  • In order to evaluate the physicochemical properties of sludge compost and to identify the effects water-extracts from sludge compost in 2, 6, 8, 12 weeks of decomposing process on seed germination and root elongation in cabbage, lettuce, soybean and barley plants was investigated. The content of total nitrogen in sludge compost increased slightly in 6 weeks decomposing process, and then decreased gradually. Organic matter content decreased continuously overall decomposing process. As decomposition was processing, pH of sludge compost decreased slightly, and EC increase within 6 weeks decomposing process, and then decreased. The content of nitrogen in water-extracts from sludge compost increased within 8 weeks decomposing process and decreased in 12 weeks decomposing process. The content of ammonium nitrogen was similar with that of total nitrogen, and the ratio of ammonium and nitrate increased within 8 weeks, and then decreased. Cation content and EC decreased the late of decomposing process and pH didn't change. The water-extracts from sludge compost during decomposing process inhibited seed germination and root elongation in cabbage (Brassica campestris), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), barley (Hordeum vulgare) and soybean (Glycine max). The inhibition of root elongation in cabbage was greater than that of relative seed germination, whereas relative seed germination in lettuce was more inhibit than root elongation. Relative seed germination and root elongation in soybean were inhibited slightly, but those of in barley was inhibited strongly. In this study, we would identify the effects of water-extracts from sludge compost on seed germination and root elongation was different to the species of seed. The inhibition of seed germination and root elongation treated with the water-extracts which extracted from sludge compost in the early stage of decomposing process was greater than that of in the late stage of decomposing process.

  • To evaluate the potential of Hypochoeris radicata L. for the development of environment-friendly organic materials, its growth characteristics, allelopathic effects and antifungal activity was investigated. The growth characteristics of H. radicata L. was investigated by measuring comparative number of shoot and flower, and the diameters of clones in mowing areas and non-mowing areas, respectively. As a result, the number of shoot and flower, and diameters of clones of H. radicata L. grown in mowing areas were much higher than those grown in non-mowing areas. Water extracts of H. radicata L. inhibited seed germination, and shoot, root and root hair growth of 14 test plants including Trifolium pratense, Festuca myuros, Bidens bipinnata and finally reduced heir biomass remarkably. The inhibitory effect of the extract was different depending on the kind and the part of tested plants. The extracts showed high antifungal activity against Pythium spp. and Phytophthora However, it showed comparably less antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani than Pythium spp. and Phytophthora. In conclusion, cutting H. radicata L. resulted increase of its vegetative and seed propagation and helped it to form large colony. Also it had an effect on growth of microbes and germination and growth of other plants. Therefore H. radicata L. holds the competitive dominant position in plant ecosystem in Jeju Island and it can be used as candidate of environment-friendly organic materials.

  • Ginseng extracts were fractionated into several fractions with various organic solvents, and the effects of these fractions on the activity of RNA polymerase were examined. Fractions which showed positive effect on the activity of RNA polymerase were obtained both from white ginseng and red ginseng. For white ginseng the components which hare shown a positive effect on RNA polymerase roue found in total methanol extracts, the residual aqueous solution from ethyl acetate extraction and the methanol insoluble fraction of the above solution, whereas for red ginseng the positive components roue found in total methanol extracts and in ethyl ether extracts. These finding suggest that the ginseng components which have Positive effect on RNA polymerase be composed of Polar and nonpolar moieties, which may be cleaved into the ports during the processing the of red ginseng.
