  • This paper presents the results of recent nutrients measurement and analysis in relation to other environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, AOU and pH in the South Sea, Korea. In summer, temperature showed stronger correlation with nutrients than salinity and also did the parameters related to biological activities such as pH and AOU. Implications of above results exemplify that primary producers in the vicinity of salt front actively consumed nutrients so that nutrients-salinity correlation is strongly modified in the salt front. Nutrient in winter showed significant correlation only with temperature. Nutrient distribution seems governed by the location of thermal front between vertically mixed cold water in northern area and warm waters flowing north. Due to weak biological activity in winter pH-nutrients correlation, which was strongest in summer ($R^2$ >0.6) dropped sharply in winter ($R^2$ <0.5). Depth integrated nitrate+nitrite, phosphate and silicate values are 321 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 23 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 637 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in summer and 261 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 31 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$, 742 $mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in winter, respectively. NIP values in summer exhibit phosphorus deficiency, however, winter situation is reversed for nitrogen. Nitrogen input via precipitation and riverine discharge in wet season seems potentially critical for maintaining the South Sea ecosystem.

  • The Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system that collects, stores, analyzes and processes geographic object data existing in space. The GIS is widely used in application fields related to geography such as city planning, land-register management, forest resources management, etc. The importance and necessity of the GIS have been well demonstrated, and therefore many studies on this system have been carried out. However, most of those studies have just treated geographic information as spatial information, but have not considered or have overlooked changes of spatial data dependent on time. For example, transportation information management and atmospheric phenomena forecast, have not exactly reflected the actual world which changes with the flow of time. In this thesis, a temporal GIS is established to effectively and precisely process information on space objects changing with time and a database is built up in reference to changes in water temperature and salinity. And the isotherm and isohaline forecast system implemented to support graphical tool.

  • In order to understand the seasonal and geographical characteristics of environmental factors and distribution of Escherichia coli by salinity gradient due to precipitation, we investigated abiotic and biotic factors during four seasons from February 2013 to November 2015. The study area was divided into three different zones based on salinity gradient and geo-oceanographic characteristics. During the study period, water temperature, salinity, Chlorophyll a, and secchi-depth varied in the range of $8.5-26.1^{\circ}C$, 13.5-34.4 psu, $0.4-74.0{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and 0.5-10.0 m, respectively. Salinity was low at Zone I, which was influenced by water flux from Tae-hwa River, especially in 2014. Salinity was gradually increased (one-way ANOVA; p < 0.05) toward Zone III located offshore of the bay. The highest colony form of E. coli was detected at Zone I. E. coli maintained a relatively low level at Zone III during all seasons. E. coli was correlated with transparency (r = -0.36; p < 0.05) and salinity (r = -0.53; p < 0.01), implying that those parameters might play important roles in the proliferation of E. coli. These results indicated that E. coli were strongly affected by frequent rain (< 50 mm) around inner stations in Ulsan Bay of Korea.

  • Growth tests on the Wando and Baengnyeongdo cultivars of Saccharina japonica were performed at the Myeongcheon and Gyedo aquafarms, Goheung in Jeollanamdo, from February to July in 2003. Five environmental conditions and 2 traits were measured monthly. The data were used to analyze the growth patterns, relationships between traits and principal component. Box plots were used to display the growth patterns. Scatter plots and regression and correlation coefficients were used to determine the strength of relationships between the traits. A principal component analysis revealed that the first principal component explained more than 91.4% and 90.5% of the total sample variance in the Myeongcheon and Gyedo aquafarms. From the viewpoint of the economic traits (blade length, blade weight), the growth of populations from the Gyedo aquafarm was stronger than that of those from the Myeongcheon aquafarm, and the growth of the Baengnyeongdo cultivar was superior to that of the Wando one.

  • Observations by CTD castings, moored current meters and satellite imageries reveal some physical characteristics of the area around the tidal mixing front found in the mid-Yellow Sea off Korea. Tidal mixing is the greatest at the promontory of Taean Peninsula with a front around it. The front appears in April with the start of solar heating, becomes most clear in August and disappears in November with the start of surface cooling. In the north of the front, tidal fluctuations of temperature and salinity induced by tidal currents manifest the existence of the front, Differently from the usual tidal mixing front, the front in Kyunggi Bay is formed by presence of the water discharged from the Han River which meets the offshore water at the front. Near the surface cold center, vertically well-mixed zone extends to about 50 Km offshore from the coast, Farther south, this structure is generally retained but with lesser degree of vertical mixing. Within the relatively well-fixed coastal zone, the fresh water discharged from the Kum River makes another salinity front of smaller extent. At some places around this salinity front, an Upwelling-like feature is remarked.

  • The impact of freshwater discharge on plankton was investigated in a semi-closed Cheonsu Bay during the rainy season. Field observations for environmental factors (seawater temperatures, salinities, chlorophyll a concentrations and nutrient concentrations) and zooplankton sampling were carried out from June 27 to September 1, 2012 at about 10 days interval. The relationship between the measured parameters and estimated values of zooplankton abundance were examined. After freshwater discharge, nutrient concentrations increased up to about twice and resultant increase of chlorophyll a followed within about 10 days. Both positive and negative impacts on zooplankton were observed. Positive one was the numerical response of zooplankton on this increased food supply, and negative one was the increased mortality caused by sudden changes in salinity. Maximum mortality of copepods was found to be up to 40%, although fast sinking of carcass made it difficult to estimate reliable mortality caused by salinity shock.

  • This study was determined to analysis marine environmental and phytoplankton monitoring in Wando coastal waters in August during the period of 2009-2010 and provided the basic environmental data against Southwest Sea of Korea. In August, 2009, the distribution of water temperature and salinity showed an unique characteristics for all of stations, which was associated with a long duration of rainfall after July, 2009 and a lack of sunshine. In the lower of August, 2010, the stratification of water temperature and salinity was shown, which was caused by an intensive sunshine after the middle of August, 2010. Gangjin Bay and Gogeundo waters showed a highly different water temperature and transparency. It is thought that two regions have a distinct water mass and characteristics. In dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation were higher according to higher water depth regardless of stations. In August, 2009, different dominant species occurred that Gangjin Bay showed a higher cell density of diatom, but Gonyaulax polygramma played an important role in dominant species in Gogeundo waters. It is associated with the introduction red tide water of G. polygramma occurring to southern coastal water in August, 2009. In August, 2010, diatom was extremely higher cell density compared with that of dinoflagellate that regarded as adaptive microrganism against higher quantity of suspended solid in Wando waters. Although Wando has a record of Cochlodinium red tide, this species may be difficult to grow and persist. Dominant species, diatom, play an important role in food organism for shellfish and forming a ecological lineage.

  • To understand differences of environmental factors and planktonic communities in closed (CS) versus open (OS) enclosed experimental systems, we performed a study on a 100-L indoor-type artificial marine microcosm. For environmental factors, including water temperature, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, and dissolved silica, there were no significant differences between CS and OS; however, salinity was higher in CS than that of OS due to the evaporation effect. The concentration of dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic nitrogen was lower in CS than in OS. The abundance of phytoplankton was lower in CS than in OS. However, abundance of autotrophic nanoflagellates and heterotrophic bacteria varied inversely with that of phytoplankton abundances. In particular, the abundance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliates increased with bacterial growth after a time lag. Therefore, environmental factors and planktonic communities in CS gradually changed over time and characterized a different artificial ecosystem than in OS.

  • In order to investigate the distribution characteristics of polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) at the southern of Korean East Sea, vertical measurements of temperature, salinity, DO and PCBs were performed by each depth of 5 stations during August - October 1996. Thermocline and salinocline were generally existed at depth of 30 m and water mass current of midwater in the southern of Korean East Sea was distributed below 30 m depth. The distribution of surface water mass in this area was extended to Tsusima area from the southern offshore of the Korean last Sea. In August 1996, concentration range of PCBs had $0.22\~0.36\;ng/\ell$ at surface layer and their concentrations at near Tsusima offshore were relatively decreased. Total mean concentration of PCBs was $0.29\;ng/\ell$ in the sea surface and $0.31\;ng/\ell$ in the middle layer. PCBs seemed to correlate well with suspended particles. And vortical and horizontal distribution of their concentrations showed comparatively uniform pattern. Relatively high compositional ratio of Di- and Tri-PCBs could be found at the sea surface, while compositional ratio of Penta-PCBs dominates over other congener at deep layer.
