The vertical profiles of natural 210Pb, 210Po and 234Th activities were measured for the upper 100 m of water column at three stations in the middle region of the Korean East Sea during May 1992. And the distribution of these radionuclides was discussed associated with the formation of warm eddy or water mass. The main thermocline was maintained between the depth of 50 and 100 m at the southern station (Sta. A1), and between the depth of 10 to 50 m at the coastal station of Sockcho (Sta. B10). Contrastingly, a main thermocline at Sta. A10, which locates near the center of warm eddy, was observed below 230 m depth. Between 50 and 220 m depth of Sta. A10 is there a relatively homogeneous water mass of 10.1${\pm}$0.5$^{\circ}C$, which is significantly higher in temperature and lower in nutrient than the other two stations. It seems to be due to sinking of the warm surface water in which nutrients were completely consumed. Both 210Pb and 210Po show the highest concentration at Sta. A1 and the lowest at Sta. B10 among the three stations. Also, the 210Pb activity is generally higher in the upper layer than in the lower layer, while 210Po activity represents the reversed pattern at all three stations. At Sta. A1 and Sta. B10, the activities of 210Po relative to its parent 210Pb were deficient in the water column above the main thermocline, but were excess below the thermocline. However, the station near the center of warm eddy(Sta. A10), shows no excess of 210Po in the depths below 50 m, although its defficiency is found in the upper layer like the other stations. At Sta. A1 and b10. 234Th activities are slightly lower in the surface mixed layer than in the deeper region However, at Sta. A10, 234Th activity in the upper 30 m is higher than below 50 m or in the same depth of the other stations, probably because of the high concentration of particulate matter. The residence time of 210Po in the surface mixed layer at Sta. A10 is 0.4 year, much shorter than at the other two stations(about one year). Above 100 m depth, the residence times of 234Th range from 18 to 30 other two stations(about on year). Above 100 m depth, the residence times of 234Th range from 18 to 30 days at all stations, without significant regional variation. The percentages of recycled 210Po within the thermocline are 39% and 92% at Sta. A1 and Sta. B10, respectively. Much higher value at Sta. B10 may be due to a thin thickness of the mixed layer as well as the slower recycling rate of 210Po in the main thermocline.

In order to see the oceanographic conditions, the observations of aquaculture farm of ascidian in Youngdeuk, the east coast of Korea were conducted through 6 times-23 February, 6 April, 8 June, 19 August, 6 October and 20 December-in 2010. Surveys were conducted in 20 stations bimonthly using SBE 19 CTD instrument. The mixed layer depth (MLD) was deep in winter and shallow in summer. The cold water below $5^{\circ}C$ in temperature was occupied below thermocline through all season. The temperature was high in the southeastern area. The salinity was increased from the coast to the open sea. The halocline was distinct at 20 m depth in August and at 40 m depth in October. The lowest value of salinity was appeared at the depth of 10 m in October. In addition the value of precipitation minus evaporation denoted negative in October. These low saline water seemed to inflow to the coast from the open sea. Therefore the low saline water moved to the east coast of Korea. The EKWC may play an important role to convey the low saline water. It may affect the aquaculture farm along the coast as the mass mortality of ascidian. It needs to clarify the role and pathway of EKWC to transfer the low saline water along the east coast of Korea.
A survey of CTD casting was taken in April 1991 in the eastern Yellow Sea. The vertical structure of water column consists of the upper mixed warm, the mid cold and the lower warm layers devised clearly by a seasonal thermocline and the temperature inversion. A strongest temperature inversion is found in the southern part of the survey area. Where the low-layer water is $3^{\circ}C$ higher than the mid-layer water. The area of the temperature inversion covers about $100{\;}km{\;}{\times}{\;}100{\;}km$ and it is observed 1.5 month later. The temperature and salinity of the low-layer water shows a core structure in vertical sections and the tongue-like distribution extending from the south to the north, implying that the warm and saline water found in the oceanic front south of the survey area in early spring is advocated to the north over 150 km underneath the Yellow Sea cold water.

We carried out a study on the marine environment, such as water temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$, and the distribution of phytoplankton community, such as species composition, dominant species and standing crops in the Southwestern Sea of Korea during early summer 2005. According to the analysis of a T-S diagram, three characteristics of water masses were identified. We classified them into Korean and Chinese coastal water, the cold water and the oceanic water. The first was characterized by high temperature and low salinity in the surface layer influenced by river run offs from China and Korea, the second by low temperature and salinity in bottom layer originated from the bottom cold water of the Yellow Sea, and the third by high temperature and high salinity influenced by Tsushima warm currents. The internal discontinuous layer among them was formed at the intermediate depth (about $10{\sim}20\;m$ layer). And the thermal front appeared in the central parts between Tsushima warm currents and Korean and Chinese coastal waters in the Southwestern Sea of Korea. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was high values in the Korean coastal waters and sub-surface layers. But It was low concentration in the Tsushima warm currents regions. The $Chl-{\alpha}$ maximum layers appeared in the sub-surface layer below thermocline. The phytoplankton community in the surface and stratified layers was composed of a total of 40 species belonging to 26 genera. Dominant species were 2 diatoms, Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum and a dinoflagellate, Scripsiella trochoidea. Standing crops of phytoplankton in the surface layer were very low with cell density ranging from 5 to $3.8\;{\times}\;10^3\;cells/L$. Diatoms were controlled by the expanded low salinity coastal waters of the low salinity with high concentrations of nutrients. Otherwise phytoflagellates were dominant in the high temperature regions where the Tsushima warm currents approches the Southwestern Sea of Korea in early summer.
The vertical profiles of the natural $^{210}Po,\;^{210}Pb\;and\;^{234}Th$, activities were measured at the upper 150 m or 200 m of water column from west-east intersection in the east-southern coastal area of the Korea Peninsula during the period from 26 to 29 April 1994 to compare the removal rates (residence time) and removal processes for $^{210}Po\;and\;^{234}Th$. At the inshore stations, the $^{210}Po$ activity was generally higher in the thermocline and its under layer than in the surface mixed layer, while represented the reversed pattern at the offshore stations. However, the $^{210}Pb$ activity decreased generally with depth. Also, the activity of $^{210}Po$ relative to its parent $^{210}Pb$ was deficient in the water column above the main thermocline, but was slightly excess or close to equilibrium in the thermocline and its under layer. The vertical profiles for the activity of $^{210}Pb$ relative to its parent $^{226}Ra$ showed the reversed pattern with the vertical variation of $^{210}Po$ excess (or deficiency). The $^{234}Th$ activity was significantly lower in the surface mixed layer and thermocline than in the deeper layer. The residence time of $^{210}Po$ ranged from 1 to 4 years at the five stations except station E8 that showed yet long residence time (approximately 10 years). The long residence time at the station E8 may resulted from the thicker surface mixed layer and subsequent the vertical mixing of $^{210}Po$ which was recycled in the lower surface mixed layer compared to at the other stations. Also, the residence time of $^{210}Po$ was shorter at the inshore stations than at the offshore stations. However, the residence time of $^{234}Th$ ranged from 52 to 74 days at all station without the significant variation, was very much shorter relative to the residence time of $^{210}Po$. The correlation between the removal rate of dissolved $^{234}Th$ and the concentration of total suspended matter (TSM) was generally positive. Therefore, it seems that the major route of the removal mechanism of $^{234}Th$ from seawater in the surface mixed layer is via adsorption onto suspended particle surfaces (most likely inorganic particles) and subsequent settling to the bottom layer. Between the removal rate of dissolved $^{210}Po$ and the concentration of chlorophyll-a was positively good correlation. Consequently, most likely the removal of $^{210}Po$ may be occurred by uptake to organisms (mainly such as planktonic debris or fecal pellets) and subsequent settling.
In this paper, the most important oceangraphic phenomena of the summer season in the East China Sea are reviewed. The hydrographic conditions in the suface layer above the seasonal thermocline are under great influence from solar heating, fresh water runoff mainly from the Yangtze River, and summer wind fields. In the lower layer below the thermocline, several distinct water masses e.g. the Kuroshio surface water, the Western North Pacific Central Water and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water are intruded in response to the adjustment of the field of mass to the various dynamical processes. The frontal mixing between the intruded Yellow Sea Bottom Cold. Water and the Western North Pacific Central Water takes place in the bottom layer over the continental shelf south off Cheju Is. This mixed water probably has mush influence on the water properties of the intermediate and bottom layer around Cheju Is. and the south coast of Korea.

In order to make clear the mechanism forming the fishing ground of anchovy drag net in connection with water temperature, catch and oceanographic data for the years of 1970-1988 in the Southern Sea of Korea were analyzed. The annual catch of anchovy drag net was about 21,000M/T in 1970 but it was increasing largely so far 100,000M/T in recent years. The fishing season of anchovy drag net is the whole year beside the prohibition season established in aims to protect the spawning group of anchovy, and then in the best season of the period from July to December, the fishing ground is made up in the coastal area joining Yosu, Namhaedo and Bangeojin. There were some evidences that the fishing condition was controlled by the oceanographic condition, especially water temperature, that is, when there was large difference in water temperature between the south area of the Eastern Sea and the west area of the southern Sea and the thermocline is formed strongly in the larger less than 20m, the fishing condition was good. On the other hand, there was a very effective correlation between the catch(X) of anchovy spawning group in Spring by other fishing gears, mainly drift net and that(Y) of the little size of anchovy by drag net in Autumn, expressed by the relative equation, Y=62,246+1.3X, r=0.63.

Temperature inversion off Wasaka Bay in the East Sea was studied using data measured on a CREAMS cruise in June of 1995 and 1996. Temperature inversion occurred mainly at the upper layer of the thermocline at a depth of no more than 20 m and around the thermal front between the TWC and the coastal waters of Japan. At some stations. temperature inversion had an influence un density inversion, while, in some other stations, high salinity water prevented density inversion.
The daily net primary production by phytoplankton and ammonium excretion by macrozooplankton (> $350{\mu}m$) were measured to understand the nitrogenous nutrient dynamics in the southern part of the East Sea of Korea. At most of the staions, water columns were well stratified and strongly developed pycnoclines and matching nutriclines could be found near the 20-60m. Total chlorophyll ranged between $1.22-3.24{\mu}g$ ChI/l and nano-fractions of chlorophyll ranged from 43.2 to 99.6% in the surface layer. The daily net primary production by phytoplankton ranged from 0.75 to 2.04 gC/$m^2$/d and averaged to be 1.5 gC/$m^2$/d. 1t is evidenced that the primary production and chlorophyll content are relatively high in frontal waters where the North Korean Cold Water meets with the East Korean Warm Water. The turnover time of nitrate in the euphotic zone ranged from 0.2 day to 1.6 day and averaged to be 0.8 day. The N:P ratio of the study area shows on the average 13.4 which indicates nitrogenous nutrient to be the limiting factor for phytoplankton growth. Ammonium excretion by macrowoplankton averaged out to 1.3mg at-N/$m^2$/d, and contributed 7.3% of daily total nitrogen requirement by phytoplankton in this area. Calculation of upward flux of nitrate to the surface mixed layer from the lower layer approximates 7% of nitrogen requirement by phytoplankton.
Temporal and spatial distributions of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity were investigated at seven sites in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa with a limited water exchange, from March to October 2005. During the study period, salinity and temperature varied $0.1{\sim}29.9\;psu$ and $4.7{\sim}28.1^{\circ}C$, respectively, depending on seasons and sites sampled. A distinct halocline profile showing the maximum density gradient (difference over $20\;psu\;m^{-1}$ between surface and bottom layers) was observed during the rainy season, due to the decrease of salinity in surface layers by freshwater inflow. This result implies that rainfall event is the important factor forming the halocline. On the other hand, the depth and location of haloeline varied with the amount of seawater through the sluice gates and the operation systems (inflow or outflow). High DO (over 300% saturation) was observed at surface layer above the halocline in April when red tide occurred, whereas low DO (below 20% saturation) was at the bottom layer below the halocline in the rainy season. Turbidity ranged $1.5{\sim}80.3\;NTU$ showing the maximum turbidity at the layers above or upper the halocline. As a result, the distributions of DO and turbidity in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa were largely affected by the variation of salinity. Also, when the halocline was formed, the water quality between upper and lower water layers may be expected completely different. This study suggests that the physicochemical characteristics of water in the brackish regions are closely associated with the causes of eutrophication such as red tide and DO deficit.
