The Status of Production and Usage of Bio-Jet Fuel (바이오항공유 생산 및 사용현황)

  • The usage of jet fuel has been increasing with increasing passenger and logistics movements under globalization. CO2, which is the main global warming gas from aircraft, was charged about 3.5% of total global CO2 emissions and 12% of transportation fuel emissions. For these reasons, a lot of governments and the international civil aviation organization (ICAO) are trying to reduce CO2 emissions via the introduction of bio-jet fuel. In this paper, we showed the jet fuel properties, specifications, and presentative production methods of bio-jet fuel such as alcohol to jet (ATJ), oil to jet (OTJ), gas to jet (GTJ) and sugar to jet (STJ). Also, we described the status of global and domestic bio-jet fuel usage and the policy plan for efficient distribution.

  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles(PHEVs) are gaining attention over the world due to their abilities to reduce $CO_2$ emission and gasoline/diesel consumption by using electricity from the grid. Lithium ion battery is one of the most suitable candidates as energy storage device for PHEVs applications up to 2030. This review focuses on the present status of lithium ion battery technology, then on comparison of the performance characteristics of the promising cathode materials.

An Evaluation of Heating Performance of the Heat Pump System Using Wasted Heat from Thermal Effluent for Greenhouse Facilities in Jeju (발전소 온배수 폐열을 이용한 제주 시설온실 냉난방용 열펌프 시스템의 난방성능 평가)

  • A heat pump system using wasted heat from thermal effluent to supply the heating energy can reduce energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases by greenhouse facilities nearby. The Jeju National University consortium constructed a heat pump system using the thermal effluent from the Jeju thermal power plant of KOMIPO to provide with cool or hot water to greenhouse facilities located 3 km from the power station. In this paper, the system configuration of the heat pump system was summarized, and the results of operations for demonstration of a heating performance carried out during the winter season in 2018 were investigated. The preoperational tests proved that the water temperature drop through the pipeline transporting extracted heat was less than $2^{\circ}C$. The COP (coefficient of performance) of the heat pump was higher than 4.0, and hot water with the maximum temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ could be supplied to greenhouse facilities by utilizing wasted heat from thermal effluent.

Region-wide Road Transport CO2 Emission Inventory (지역단위 도로교통 탄소배출 인벤토리구축 방법론)

  • Due to its excessive $CO_2$ emissions, road transport sector becomes a target for emission reduction strategies. Although precise and reliable emissions inventories are necessary for evaluating plans and strategies, developing the region-wide inventory is a difficult task mainly because of a lack of data including travel patterns and modal volumes in the reginonal context. Most existing inventory methodologies employ fuel sale data within the target region, which ignores actual regional traffic patterns and thus not suited to its geographical context. To overcome these problems, this study develops region-wide $CO_2$ emissions inventory methodology by utilizing the Korea Transport DB (KTDB). KTDB provides a number of useful information and data, such as road network with which one can identify in and out trips over the entire region, traffic volumes of various modes, distance of travel, travel speed and so on. A model of equations that allow the computation of volume of $CO_2$ emitting from the road transport activities within the target region is developed. Using the model, numerical analyses are performed for the case of Busan Metropolitan City to demonstrate the applicability of the developed model. This study is indeed exploratory in the sense that using the existing data, it develops the $CO_2$ emissions inventory methodology which can produce better results than those from conventional fuel sales methodology. This study also suggests further reresarch directions to develop more refined methodologies in region-wide basis.

Strategic Planning of Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) Infrastructure Considering the Uncertainty in the Operating Cost and Carbon Tax (불확실한 운영비용과 탄소세를 고려한 CCS 기반시설의 전략적 계획)

  • A carbon capture and storage (CCS) plays a very important role to reduce $CO_2$ dramatically in $CO_2$ emission sources which are distributed throughout various areas. Numerous research works have been undertaken to analyze the techno-economic feasibility of planning the CCS infrastructure. However, uncertainties such as $CO_2$ emissions, $CO_2$ reduction costs, and carbon taxes may exist in various impact factors of the CCS infrastructure. However, few research works have adopted these uncertainties in designing the CCS infrastructure. In this study, a two-stage stochastic programming model is developed for planning the CCS infrastructure under uncertain operating costs and carbon taxes. It can help determine where and how much $CO_2$ to capture, store or transport for the purpose of minimizing the total annual $CO_2$ reduction cost in handling the uncertainties while meeting the $CO_2$ mitigation target. The capability of the proposed model to provide correct decisions despite changing the operating costs and carbon taxes is tested by applying it to a real case study based on Korea. The results will help to determine planning of a CCS infrastructure under uncertain environments.

  • Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exists not only as a component of natural gas, biogas, and landfill gas, but also as a major combustion product of fossil fuels which leads to a major contributor to greenhouse gases. Hence it is essential to reduce or eliminate carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in order to obtain high fuel efficiency of internal combustion engine, to prevent corrosion of gas transportation system, and to cope with climate change preemptively. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in not only conventional membrane-based separation but also new adsorbent-based separation technology. Particularly, in the case of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it has been received tremendous attentions due to its unique properties (eg : flexibility, gate effect or strong binding site such as open metal sites) which are different from those of typical porous adsorbents. Therefore, in this study, stereotype of two MOFs have been selected as its flexible MOFs (MIL-53) representative and numerous open metal sites MOFs (MOF-74) representative, and compared each other for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation performance. Furthermore, varying and changeable separation performance conditions depending on the temperature, pressure or samples' unique properties are discussed.

Demonstration-scale Offshore CO2 Storage Project in the Pohang Basin, Korea (포항분지 해상 중소규모 CO2 저장 실증연구)

  • $CO_2$ storage is a very important technology for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and has been considered as almost the only viable and effective option for immediate large-scale $CO_2$ sequestration. Small-scale demonstration project for offshore $CO_2$ storage in the Pohang Basin is the transitional stage R&D program for technological preparation of large-scale $CO_2$ storage project in Korea. Through the extensive exploration research for prospective $CO_2$ storage sites, the offshore strata in the Pohang Basin was recommended for the storage formation of the small-scale demonstration project. The Pohang Offshore Storage Project launched at 2013, and has accomplished the technical demonstration and technological independence in a wide range of $CO_2$ storage technology, such as geophysical exploration, storage site characterization, storage design, offshore platform construction, injection-well drilling and completion, deployment of injection facility, operation of $CO_2$ injection, and $CO_2$ monitoring. The project successfully carried out $CO_2$ test injection in early 2017, and achieved its final goal for technical development and demonstration of $CO_2$ storage in Korea. The realization of $CO_2$ injection in this project is the measurable result and has been recorded as the first success in Korea. The Pohang Offshore Storage Project has a future plan for the continuous operation of $CO_2$ injection and completion of $CO_2$ monitoring system. The project has provided in-house technical and practical expertises, which will be a solid foundation for the commercial-scale $CO_2$ storage business in Korea. Additionally, the project will help to secure national technical competitiveness in growing international technology market for $CO_2$ storage.

A Study on Fuel Quality Characteristics of F-T Diesel for Production of BTL Diesel (BTL 디젤 생산을 위한 F-T 디젤의 연료적 특성 연구)

  • In order to reduce the effects of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the South Korean government has announced a special platform of technologies as part of an effort to minimize global climate change. To further this effort, the Korean government has pledged to increase low-carbon and carbon neutral resources for biofuel derived from biomass to replace fossil and to decrease levels of carbon dioxide. In general, second generation biofuel produced form woody biomass is expected to be an effective avenue for reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in road transport. It is important that under the new Korean initiative, pilot scale studies evolve practices to produce biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel. This study reports the quality characteristics of F-T(Fischer-Tropsch) diesel for production of BTL fuel. Synthetic F-Tdiesel fuel can be used in automotive diesel engines, pure or blended with automotive diesel, due to its similar physical properties to diesel. F-T diesel fuel was synthesized by Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process with syngas($H_2$/CO), Fe basedcatalyst in low temperature condition($240^{\circ}C$). Synthetic F-T diesel with diesel compositions after distillation process is consisted of $C_{12}{\sim}C_{23+}$ mixture as a kerosine, diesel compositions of n-paraffin and iso-paraffin compounds. Synthetic F-T diesel investigated a very high cetane number, low aromatic composition and sulfur free level compared to automotive diesel. Synthetic F-T diesel also show The wear scar of synthetic F-T diesel show poor lubricity due to low content of sulfur and aromatic compounds compared to automotive diesel.

A Study on the Thermal Conductivity Measurement for Planting Mats of Landscaping (조경용 식생매트의 열전도율 측정에 관한 연구)

  • Developed nations have implemented various policies to reduce greenhouse gases since the 1997 Kyoto Protocol in order to minimize the effects of global warming. Korea should also reduce energy consumption in the industrial sector, and the transportation and building sectors in order to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction target of 37 percent compared to the Business As Usual levels. The government implements various laws and regulations for reducing energy consumption. To reduce energy consumption in the building sector, in particular, the Energy Conservation Design Standards are enforced according to the 'Enforcement Support for Green Building Construction'. The amount of electricity used to maintain room temperature at $28^{\circ}C$ in these buildings have a 30% reduction (measured on the walls and rooftop) in power usage compared to buildings not required to meet these standards. Although the effect of these energy savings on landscaping is proven, this demonstration is not effective for energy saving since it is not a suitable method for the 'Energy Saving Design Standards of Buildings'. For landscaping to be effective as far as a component of energy reduction, the perfusion rate of the building should be calculated based on the thermal conductivity of the component materials for the energy saving designs with respect to the basis of Article 14 of the Green Building Act. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to ensure that the planting-based mats currently being widely used in the landscape industry can have insulating performance suitable for the 'Energy Saving Design Standards' of Buildings according to the 'Enable Green Building Construction Methods'.

  • 국제 원유가의 지속적인 상승에 따라 화석연료 고갈을 대비한 대체에너지 및 온실가스배출 감소를 위하여 바이오연료의 시용 및 상용보급은 전세계적인 추세이다. 우리나라의 경우 바이오디젤은 2002년부터 시범보급사업(Demonstration & disseminatio을 거쳐 2000년 7월부터 전국주유소를 통하여 경유 중에 바이오디젤 0.5%를 혼합한 BD0.5를 수송용 연료로 도입하여 아시아 최초로 상용보급화를 시행하고 있다. 또한 휘발유 중 바이오에탄올 혼합 연료유 도입을 위한 실증평가연구를 2006년 8월부터 2008년 7월까지 수행중이다. 자동차용 휘발유의 옥탄가 향상을 위해 함산소 기재로 사용되는 MTBE(Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether)를 바이오에탄올로 대체한 바이오에탄올 혼합연료유는 수분 혼입에 의한 상 분리(Phase separation)와 금속에 대한 부식성 문제를 야기 시킬 수 있다. 바이오에탄올을 서브옥란가솔린(Sub-octane gasoline)에 혼합하여 상 분리 모사실험, 금속류 부식시험, 고무류 침지실험 등 다양한 품질특성평가를 수행하였으며, 이런 결과들을 바탕으로 국내실정에 알맞은 최적의 혼합량(E3, E5)을 도출하였다. 또한 전국에 4개 시범주유소를 운영하여 바이오에탄올 혼합 연료유의 유통 및 보급을 통해 최적의 유통인프라(Distribution infrastructure) 보완 및 구축 방안을 도출 하고자 한다.
