  • Physicochemical and morphological characteristics of biopellets produced in "control" and modified UASB reactor were investigated to compare the reactor performance with regard to the hydrogen partial pressure. The characteristics of biopellet produced in modified UASB reactor operated with high hydrogen partial pressure were better than those of "control" reactor operated with relatively lower hydrogen partial pressure, therefore the hydrogen partial pressure effected greatly on the formation and stability of the biopellet. Furthermore, pellets from the UASB system with modified settler showed a better settleability and biomass holding capacity. The chemical composition of biopellet was distinctively different from that of common bacterial formula, $C_5H_7O_2N$. Biopellets was composed the large fraction of nitrogen in comparison with common anaerobic microbes. These results implicated the existence possibility of polypeptide-type extracellular polymer. The morphological characterization with SEM showed that microorganisms observed at surface of biopellet produced in modified UASB reactor operated with high $P_{H_2}$ condition were very similar in shape and size to the Methanobrevibactor arboriphilus-$H_2$ utilizing methanogen. The microorganisms was distinguished from those of "control" reactor operated with low $P_{H_2}$ condition. From these results, it could be explained the hydrogen partial pressure effects on pelletization mechanism.

  • Hydrogen reduction technique was used to form the nickel layer onto alumina powders in nickel sulfate solutions. The reduction rate and precipitation states of nickel ions were investigated at various experimental conditions such as hydrogen pressure, temperature, $PdCl_{2}$ addition, particle size, and so on. Uniformly nickel coated alumina composite powders were obtained at such condition as reduction temperature of $165^{\circ}C$, hydrogen pressure of 300 psi, and $PdCl_{2}$ amount of $2\;mg/\ell$.

  • In this study, dynamic simulation of membrane reactor was performed for water gas shift reaction and temperature, hydrogen concentration, etc. were investigated as a function of time and position. Simulation results indicated that differences of hydrogen concentration, hydrogen partial pressure, and temperature in the radial direction, were larger in the entrance than in the exit. In addition, the hydrogen flux was the largest in the entrance, where the hydrogen partial pressure difference was the largest, and the conversion of carbon monoxide in the exit was about 0.65.

  • The effect of gas sparging on continuous fermentative $H_2$ production was investigated using external gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$) with various flow rates (100, 200, 300, 400 ml/min). Gas sparging showed a higher $H_2$ yield than no sparging, indicating that the decrease of $H_2$ partial pressure by gas sparging had a good effect on $H_2$ fermentation. Especially, $CO_2$ sparging was more effective in the reactor performance than $N_2$ sparging. The composition of butyrate, the main metabolic product of $H_2$ fermentation by Clostridium sp., was much higher in $CO_2$ sparging. $H_2$ production increased with increasing flow rate only in $CO_2$ sparging. The best performance was obtained by $CO_2$ sparging at 300 ml/min, resulting in the highest $H_2$ yield of 1.65 mol $H_2/mol$ hexoseconsumed and the maximum $H_2$ production of 6.77 L $H_2/g$ VSS/day. Compared to $N_2$ sparging, there could be another beneficial effect in $CO_2$ sparging apart from lowering down the $H_2$ partial pressure. High partial pressure of $CO_2$ had little effect on $H_2$ producing bacteria but inhibitory effect on other microorganisms like lactic acid bacteria and acetogens which were competitive with $H_2$ producing bacteria.

  • The culture conditions and cell composition of a hydrogen bacterica, Alcaligenes eutrophus ATCC 17697. were investigated. Optimum pH and temperature for cell growth under autotrophic condition ($H_2$ as energy source, $CO_2$, as crabon source) were around 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Effect of oxygen partial pressure in the range of 0.059 atm and 0.27 atm on cell growth was also studied. Maximum specific growth rate $({\mu}max=0.31hr^{-1})$ was observed at 0.11 atm of oxygen partial pressure $(H_2:O_2:CO_2=7:1:1)$. The contents of crude protein, nucleic acid and ash in cells were 69.2%, 17.6%, and 3.62%, respectively.

  • In a previous research, it has been found that it could be possible to increase the partial pressure of hydrogen and hydrogen yield by scavenging the $CO_2$ from the heads pace of reactor. In this research, the positive and negative effects of the $CO_2$ scavenging especially on the fate of by-products were investigated by a batch experiment. Production and conversion of by-products had critical relationships with hydrogen evolution and consumption. The maximum hydrogen fraction in the headspace was increased from 66.4 to 91.2% by removing the $CO_2$ in the headspace and the degradation rate of glucose was also enhanced. The removal of $CO_2$ effectively hindered the homoacetogenesis but caused several negative phenomena. The degradation of ethanol, one of the main products, was inhibited by the high partial pressure of hydrogen and/or the absence of $CO_2$. Also it was observed that other by-products such as propionate, propanol, acetone, etc. could not be degraded further after produced from glucose. On the other hand, solventogenesis was not observed in spite of the high hydrogen partial pressure apart from previous researches and it might hinder the excess production of acetate, which could cause overall inhibition. From this research, it could be implicated that the $CO_2$ scavenging method could be recommended if the fermentation was purposed to produce hydrogen and ethanol.

  • Gasification characteristics and gas produced from a sewage sludge char were analyzed by using a thermobalance reactor, which is used for a reaction kinetic analysis by measuring weight change of materials at a desired temperature. Gasification reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and steam partial pressure due to the promotion of gasification reaction. Three models of gas-solid reaction were applied to the reaction kinetics analysis and modified volumetric reaction model was an appropriated model for the steam gasification of the sewage sludge char. Apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factors were evaluated as 155.5 kJ/mol and $14,087s^{-1}atm^{-1}$, respectively. The order of reaction on steam partial pressure was 0.68. Gas analysis was performed at $900^{\circ}C$ and hydrogen concentration was highest in the gas concentrations, which increased with increasing the steam partial pressure. Hydrogen concentration increased the most and hydrogen concentration in the produced gas was 2-4 times higher than that of carbon monoxide due to the gasification and water gas shift reaction.

  • Naphthalene hydrogenation reaction was performed as a model reaction for coal liquefaction. Product distributions of tetralin and decalin are sensitive to reaction temperature and hydrogen pressure. At 380$^{\circ}C$, hydrogenation reaction using sulfided pellet catalysts gives poor reproducibility and several experimental methods are tried to examine its cause. It was inferred that H$_2$S had, most possibly, a great effect on this phenomena and the effect of H$_2$S was systematically investigated at 250$^{\circ}C$. It is possible that the intermediate hydroaromatic compound (tetralin) is maximized by changing the partial pressure of H$_2$S. It was identified that the partial pressure of H$_2$S could be another important factor in addition to the reaction time and temperature in coal liquefaction using sulfided catalysts.
