  • Spiritual direction is not a product created and developed by an individual, but a historical product that includes the church, believers, society, and the contexts of the times. Among the social changes related to spiritual direction, this study pays attention to monasticism and the Reformation. Focusing on these two social changes, this study analyzes the social dimension of spiritual direction indicated by the occurrence and change of spiritual direction and discusses its meaning. Around the time Christianity was officially recognized by the Roman Empire, monasticism began its long history, and Athanasius spread his ideal of monastic life and at the same time pursued the unity of the church and the monastic movement. Through this process, spiritual disciplines and educational models interacted and changed. During the Reformation period, Protestantism began to form new spiritual education and training. The Catholic Church pursued renewal through new concepts and practices of spiritual direction. Spiritual direction is being formed and recognized as a means of helping the spiritual life of individual Christians. The origin and change of spiritual direction mean that spiritual direction can be understood and applied differently reflecting the contexts and situations due to social interaction. Also, it should not be overlooked that spiritual direction can act as a cause of integration or division of the Korean Protestant churches.

  • Certosa, a representative Monastic Architecture of Renaissance era, has been well preserved. And it has worked as a symbol of the space form & style revealed by monad, sell, arcade and court, which are characteristic of a monastery. A court is divided into large court and small one, and it connects each units and each sells through the annex with clarifying each space identities. And arcade and pillar is not only to derive a unitary space from entire space, but also to try openness and extension applying a different height in spite of physical closure of style. Especially planned by monad and cell, the routine space of monks, a structure of rational space is a yardstick of moderation and frugality, showing affluent space which occupy essential areas without extra space. And the space appears self-sufficiency, honest poverty, and affluence with order and eternity based on elementary principles of the Cartusio order in composition and plan of the space. Keeping strong linking with entire sells in the monastery, Each sell symbolizes entire sells, and the inverse is the same. And it is the universe advocating eternity and it is also a small city which provides the monks with accurate modules and scales in the very recluse space.

  • In this paper, we consider relationship of the monastic mathematics and the arts of the middle ages. Because mathematics and arts are effects of the spirit of the ages. Here, we concern with the Rome and the religion of Christ. Next, we think of the bible and Christian doctrine and then compare with Christian arts and arts of the customs of the middle ages. The middle ages is the period of women's inequality according to the feudal system. So we investigate the correlation of the christianity, arts of the middle ages, women's inequality and monastic mathematics which is worthless in mathematics history.

  • The background of this study was the fact that the religious spaces require sacred space devices in addition to aesthetic aspects. This study began with the definition that 'philosophical phenomenology provides one of the theoretical frameworks for religious phenomenology'. Seeing that 'philosophical phenomenology has limitations in drawing out the characteristics, this study attempted to study religious spaces through the method of specialized and refined religious phenomenology for the religious spaces alone. The purpose of this study was to understand the characteristics of religious spaces and the fact that the religious spaces are divided into 'profane' domains and 'sacred' ones and to analyze the characteristics of space and light in terms of religious phenomenology through Dutch religious architect Dom Hans van der Laan's architectural projects of monasteries. The study method was to present the relationship between space and light in terms of religious phenomenology and to summarize Van der Laan's interpretational method of the religious spaces through the architect's life and architectural philosophy. The conclusion of this study was that Dom Hans van der Laan's entire works were judged to have sufficient research value in studying the religious spaces as they were all created in the special category of 'religion'. With his project, it is possible for us to study 'hierophany' as experience of space and light through the methodology of religious phenomenology. This study has significant meaning in that it introduced an architect of religious spaces and a related new view on architecture.

  • In the past, holy sites were mainly designated on a basis of archaeological norms and endowed with a specific fixed identity according to historical, religious, and contextual interpretations. However, approaches to these sites are more flexible in recent times. These locations transcend the boundaries of space and time to enable the experience of diverse transformation and reveal multiple religious identities which are embedded in the complex interaction between power and authority. In this regard, the dynamic meanings of the religious symbology of Daesoon Jinrihoe's temple complexes, imagery, and the spatial structures enable us to grant them a new identity by re-establishing these structures as World Heritage sites. Temple complexes (dojang) correspond to the outstanding universal values identified by UNESCO in that the spiritual activities conducted at these holy sites draw the same attention as would be drawn by historical value. In this context, this study aims to explore the potential for Daesoon Jinrihoe's temple complexes to be designated UNESCO world heritage sites. To carry out this study, existing religious heritage sites such as Mount Athos Monasteries in Greece and Lumbini in Nepal are examined as case studies, and the operational plan, conservation, protection of relics, and interaction with its neighboring community and tourists are likewise closely examined in this study.
