  • The relationship between summer hypoxia in bottom water layer and benthic community structure was discussed at forty sampling stations in semi-enclosed Youngsan River estuarine bay, Korea. The oxygen deficient layer less than $2.0 mg/\ell$ was widely developed in the inner estuarine stations in summer due to the summer stratification. A total of 141 species was occurred, with a mean density of $1,923 ind./m^2$ and biomass of $79.44\;g/m^2$ in summer season. The species number was significantly increased with the increment of the bottom dissolved oxygen, whereas density and biomass were partially correlated within the low oxygen level of $2.0\;mg/\ell$. These results imply that benthic community structures are affected by bottom oxygen depletion in summer. Cluster analysis showed that the benthic community could be classified into three station groups. These station groups from the species composition coincided with the groups based on the environmental factors. This fact suggests that the overall spatial distribution of macrozoobenthos in Youngsan River estuarine bay in summer should be controlled by the summer hypoxia and clay content of the area. Group-I was located the innermost estunrine bay from Mokpo Harbour to near the dike, where summer hypoxia was developed and one bivalve Theora fragilis, two polychaetes, Tharyx sp. and Lumbrineris longifolia were dominated. Group-II, the central transitory area of the estuarine bay between two another stational groups, where two bivalves Theora fragilis, Raetellops pulchella and a polychaete Tharyx sp. predominated with relatively low density compared to that of Group-I. Group-III, the mouth part of the estunrine bay exposed to the open sea, where a polychaetes Poecilochaetus johnsoni and a bivalve Yoldia Johanni predominated.

  • 저서동물은 생태계 내에서 여러 가지 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있다. 저서생물은 유용저서어류나 유용 무척추동물의 먹이로서 매우 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. (Dean, 1973: McIntyre, 1978; McIntyre and Eleftherion,1968) • In order to understand the seasonal change of phytoplankton as well as the effect of water physico-chemical parameters, we investigated 18 stations in coastal areas of the East Sea in February, May, August and November in 2009. The taxa of phytoplankton observed in this study were classified as 37 Bacillariophyceae, 22 Dinophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 3 Dictyophyceae and 1 Cryptophyceae. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from $1.2{\times}10^3cells/L$ to $246.6{\times}10^3cells/L$(with a mean value of $24.8{\times}10^3cells/L$), the highest biomass was observed in May. The dominant species were Leptocylindrus danicus, Chaetoceros affinis, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Thalassionema nitzschioides and etc. Pearson's correlation co-efficient between phytoplankton abundance and other water parameters showed the positive relationships with pH, DO, Secchi-disk depth, and SS, the negative relationships with $SiO_2-Si$. Seasonal patterns of phytoplankton dominant species were affected by the characteristics of water masses based on T-S diagram analysis. In particular, phytoplankton distributional patterns were related with water temperature in May and salinity in August, respectively. According to the result of MDS(Multi-dimensional scaling) using the phytoplankton abundance and species composition, the spatial distribution of phytoplankton were characterized with Ganwon(Group A) and Gyeongbuk(Group B) at the coastal areas of Jukbyeon or Uljin.

  • In order to study the formation and structure of tidal fronts and their influence on the distribution and productivity of phytoplankton in the outer of Kyonggi Bay, analyses on the water temperature data from 1977 to 1986 and 3 surveys from 1981 to 1986 were carried out in the mid0eastern coast of the Yellow Sea. Temperature gradients and dissolved oxygen gradients were implied that the tidal fronts are formed at the outer of the Kyonggi Bay along the western side of Tae-An peninsula from spring to summer. the formations of tidal fronts in this study area influence the distribution of phytoplankton and primary productivity. The standing stocks, chlorophyll concentrations and primary productivity of phytoplankton in the frontal area are higher than those of the outer stratified waters and the inner coastal mixed waters. These high production in the frontal area are resulted from good light condition and rich nutrient within the water columns. With a boundary of frontal area, there are relatively high chlorophyll concentrations and primary productivity in the coastal mixed waters while there are low chlorophyll concentrations and relatively high primary productivity in the stratified waters. These relatively high primary productivity in the outer area are resulted from the high potential production by nanoplankton in the surface layer and the high production of tychopelagic diatoms under the thermocline with the deep transparency.

  • In order to investigate the seasonal variation of watermass in the adjacent sea of Naro Island, oceanographic observation on the fishing grounds were carried out by the training vessel of Yosu National University on winter, spring, summer, and autumn in 2000. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) the watermass in the fishing ground were divided into the coastal water (30.0∼31.4psu), mixing water (31.5∼32.9psu) and the offshore water (33.0∼35.0psu) according to the distribution of salinity from T-S diagram plotted all salinity data observed on winter, spring, summer, and autumn in 2000. 2) the ranges of temperature and salinity were from 4.$3\circ_C$ to 10.1$^{\circ}C$ and from 33.1psu to 34.9psu in winter, from 8.$1\circ_C$ to 13.$7\circ_C$ and from 33.1psu to 34.3psu in spring, from 14.5$^{\circ}C$ to 24.$2\circ_C$ and from 30.5psu to 34.1psu in summer, and from 14.$5\circ_C$ to 18.$6\circ_C$ and from 30.1psu to 34.0psu in autumn, respectively. 3) the distribution of watermass in the fishing ground varied largely each seasons, but a general tendency on the distribution was obtained. That is, in winter and spring the offshore water was distributed most widely and in summer the coastal and mixing water occupied the fishing ground but in autumn the mixing water prevailed. 4) variation of temperature and salinity were appeared between the surface and 20m layer in the sea aduacent to Naro Island. Therefore, in the summer the thermocline were made between surface and 20m layer with vertical gradients of 4.$0\circ_C$/7m.

  • This study investigated the mesozooplankton community and the related environmental factors in the Nakdong River Estuary in May and early October shortly after passage of the typhoon "DUJUAN" in 2015. The mesozooplankton community was dominated by barnacle nauplii, foraminiferans, and Noctiluca scintillans, and the environmental characteristics were characterized by freshwater inflow through the Nakdong River barrage, the intrusion of warm currents, and the effect of typhoon passage in October. In May, cladocerans, such as Evadne nordmanni and Podon polyphemoides, as indicator species of brackish water, prevailed throughout the study area. The surface salinity was lowest on the inner side of the barrier-islands and increased gradually to the outer side during the study. The average concentration of total suspended solids in October was higher than that in May, while the averaged concentration of nitrate and chlorophyll-a in May was higher than those in October. On the other hand, there was no temporal difference in the total averaged abundance of mesozooplankton. In contrast, the distributional pattern of the mesozooplankton community was associated with the salinity gradient in both seasons. These results suggest that the temporal difference of the mesozooplankton community depended on the extent of freshwater inflow by barrage opening, the intrusion intensity of warm currents, and typhoon passage in the Nakdong River estuary in 2015.

  • Process of resuspension and accumulation well explaines the characteristics of surface sediment size distribution and suspended material in Deukryang Bay. Most of the surface sediments of the bay show asymmetric unimodal size distribution, which is found also in sediments from western part of the inner shelf mud area between Keomundo and Yokchido islands. Investigation of the size curves indicates that surface sediment in Deukryang Bay is a deposit of suspended coastal sediment transported east along southern coast of Korea. The distribution pattern of coarse sit fraction content in the surface sediment is very similar to that of computed current velocity (Lee, 1994), suggesting that fine sediment on the bed may reassumed and accumulate repeatedly due to shallow depth and strong tidal current in Deukryang Bay. The process of repeated resuspension and accumulate repeatedly due to shallow depth and strong tidal current in Deukryang Bay. The process of repeated resuspension and accumulation seems to be responsible not only to the asymmetric size distribution of the surface sediment, but also to the amount of suspended material in the bay. The difference of suspended material concentration between surface and near bottom water in summer is two times as large as that the in winter. This seems to derive from the fact that stratification of water mass prevails in summer, while total water mass is vertically mixed in winter. It was found that the most important factors to decide distribution of suspended material in Deukryang Bay are the physical properties of water mass such as current velocity and stratification, and water depth, in part with the supply of suspended sediment by rivers.

  • In this study, Helikite, Low Altitude Remote Sensing (LARS) platform, was used to acquire coastal images. In the obtained image, the land and water masses were divided using four types of region clustering algorithms, and then waterline was extracted using edge detection. Quantitative comparisons were not possible due to the lack of in-situ waterline data. But, based on the image of the infrared band where water masses and land are relatively clear, the waterlines extracted by each algorithm were compared. As a result, it was found that each algorithm differed significantly in the part where the distinction between water masses and land was ambiguous. This is considered to be a difference in the process of selecting the threshold value of the digital number that each algorithm uses to distinguish the regions. The extraction of waterlines through various algorithms is expected to be used in conjunction with a Low Altitude Remote Sensing system that can be continuously monitored in the future to explain the rapid changes in coastal shape through several years of long-term data from fixed areas.

  • The community structure and micro-scale distribution of plankton in relation to hydrography were investigated in Masan Bay, Korea in October 1989. Warmer and less saline waters with stratification was located in the inner part of the Pudo Strait, and chlorophyll-a and nutrients were higher. Both phytoplankton biomass and nutrients was changed dramatically around the Strait. Offshore/oceanic species in phytoplankton i.e., Chaetoceres decipiens, Rhizosolenia stolterforthii, Rhizosolenia styliformis and Ceratium trichoceros and zooplankton i.e., Sagitta enflata, Oncaea uenusta and Oikopluera longicaudata occurred mainly in well mixed waters of the outer part. This suggests that discontinuous layer seems to play an important role as an approximate border for the plankton population. This layer was located between Station 3 and Station 4 near the Pudo Strait, since the layer consisted of a series of micro-scale discontinuties of salinity and dissolved inorganic nutrients gradient. Phytoplankton patchs of more than 801e1 were found only in the inner part of the bay. Depletion of silicate caused by a rapid assimilation of phytoplankton in the inner part of the bay seemed to be responsible for the decline of blooms.

  • Goal of this study is estimating of validity of calculated vertical diffusion coefficient for Masan bay is semi-enclosed bay by using eco-hydrodynamic model that is used to analysis of physical structure of coastal waters and calculates the vertical diffusion coefficient. physical structure of coastal waters is calculated by EFDC model, vertical diffusion coefficient calculated as the density gradient is bigger, the vertical diffusion coefficient as density gradient is increases, the vertical diffusion coefficient is decreased. Validity of vertical diffusion coefficient estimated by reproducibility of concentration of dissolved oxygen that calculated in ecosystem model is constructed by Stella program. The Results of model in 2008~2009 were $R^2$ value of 2008 is 0.529~0.700 and $R^2$ value is 0.542~0.791. This results were similar to observed data and simulated to hypoxia at that time. The 'vertical diffusion coefficient' represents stratification and physical stable of a water body, and will be useful for prediction of Hypoxia outbreak.
