The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of handwork oriented learning in home economics subjects on the brain function and creativity of elementary and middle school students. To achieve these purposes, 134 elementary school students and 49 middle school students were sampled and assigned to the experimental group and control group. The 12 sessions of handwork oriented learning program were treated to the experimental group. And the 'Brain Function Test' developed by Gordon(l978), and the 'Creativity Test' developed by Korean Educational Development Institute(1990) were administered to them for pretest and posttest. The collected data were analyzed by t-test. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1. It was found that the handwork oriented learning in home economics subjects could develop the brain function of students. 2. It was found that the handwork oriented learning in home economics subjects could develop the creativity of students.

This study is a background for developed woodworking educational program. To achieve the propose of this research, related to handwork to figure out the concept, changes and characteristics of handwork and the products of handwork. The areas of woodworking needs basic hand function of gripping and hooking, strong hands and stability of hand operation. Activities of this area can enhance the ability of controlling the strength of hand and the stability of hand operation. The use of both hands in woodworking promotes the coordination of both hands and handling ability. In the woodworking, diverse functions of hands are used with various tools. Each hand may be move differently, and the hand operation is elaborated. These features of woodworking help growing coordinations and hand function, and developing brain and creativeness.

In order for young people to be interested in tradition, a specialized experience program that can be frequently encountered is needed. We have developed an after-school traditional gift-wrapping design program in relation to the subject of home economics for the purpose of enabling students to become interested in tradition and deepen their traditional knowledge. The research process was comprised of analysis, development, and evaluation. We analyzed the home economics curriculum, authentic designs from blogs and department stores along with books published by gift-wrapping associations, and interviews with three gift wrapping specialists. Contemporary traditional packaging design is not limited to the reproduction of the traditional design but also creates designs that strongly express unique Korean identity using traditional symbol patterns, colors, traditional decorations, and small items along with modern materials. A 16-week after-school program was developed based on the analysis results. After the implementation of the after-school program in a middle school, survey results showed students who were indifferent toward tradition showed interest and acquired a positive image towards tradition.
