  • The field measurements on the shotcrete lining are usually performed during the tunnel construction. However, the credibility of the measurements is not certain because of the non-stress related strains occurring in the shotcrete, the uncertainty of the deformation modulus of the shotcrete, and the intrinsic difficulties involved in the strain measurements in the shotcrete. The problem related to the field measurements on the shotcrete is investigated using the review of the previous studies and the field measurement performed for this study. A method for the correction of stress measurements at the shotcrete lining, considering the non-stress related strains, is suggested using the literature review and the actual measurements obtained from the non-stress shotcretes. The deformation modulus used for the calculation of the stress acting on the shotcrete is also suggested.

  • The use of lattice girder is increased at the tunnel site in Korea because of the several advantages over the traditional H-steel rib. The lattice girder supports the ground with shotcretes, forming a combined support system. Therefore, stress measurements at the lattice girder are necessary to calculated the ground loads. However, field measurements at the lattice girder are rarely performed at the tunnel site. The proper way of stress measurements for the lattice girder is not fully established in Korea. The correction of stress measurements at the shotcretes is often disregarded even though the measured stresses include non-stress related strains. Results of the stress measurements obtained from the lattice girder and non-stress shotcretes are used to improve the credibility of the stress measurements at the primary lining.

  • Stress measurements of shotcrete lining were performed to evaluate the stability of the primary lining and to determine the thickness and the construction timing of the secondary lining. The current situation of stress measurements of shotcrete and problems related to judging the safety of shotcrete linings are presented, based on the results of several case studies. An improved method of performing stress measurements on shotcrete lining is also presented. In evaluating the safety of shotcrete lining, the use of absolute values of measured stresses would improve the reliability of the measurements.

  • This technical paper is a study on the unique displacements of Shotcrete Lining at the mined tunnel during excavation period through deep consideration with real time data from monitoring instrumentations correlation with the numerical analysis to identify the rock stresses and the rock spring points at the working face of the Conventional tunnelling by the Drill and Blast, based on the geological face mapping results of the project NS2, Transmission cable tunnel project in Singapore. The created geometry of numerical model was prepared to the real mined tunnel construction site including, vertical shaft, construction adit, tunnel junction area, and 2 enlargement caverns. The convergence measurements by the monitoring instrumentation were performed during the tunnel excavation and shaft sinking construction stages to guarantee the safety of complicated underground structures.

  • Recently, the proportion of long tunnel has increased for efficient use of land due to limited land area, driving convenience and high speed. RMR and Q-System of empirical methods has been mainly used for tunnel support design in domestic. Although shotcrete is the key to NATM tunnel, the related studies are insufficient. So, steel fiber reinforced shotcrete is applied to II~V grade rocks on domestic and foreign applications. And same amount of shotcrete is equally applied to tunnel roof and wall regardless of the applied rock load. Shotcrete is applied excessively rather than the original proposed value of RMR and Q-System. Thus, this study is to reevaluate the application part of plain shotcrete and steel fiber reinforced shotcrete of tunnel in Daebo granite, and to propose the reasonable application method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Field test and numerical back analysis using measurements were performed to verify stability. According to results, if RMR values are the upper class in the III grade, it can be designed in accordance with upper grade. In addition, if rock condition is good as a mountain tunnel in Daebo granite, it can be applied for plain shotcrete to III grade rocks because there is also no stability problems. And although steel fiber reinforced shotcrete is applied only crown of the tunnel in IV grade rocks, it is possible to secure stability for falling rock by key-block.

  • The use of lattice girder is increased rapidly as a substitute for H-steel ribs at the tunnel sites in Korea. Ground loads acting on the tunnel are supported by shotcrete and lattice girders. To assess the safety of the tunnel, it is essential to obtain field measurements for the lattice girders; however, lattice girder measurements have rarely been performed at tunnel sites, and the method of measurement is not well established. In the present study we suggest a load cell method for the instrumentation of tunnels with lattice girders. Actual measurements of ground loads acting on lattice girders are presented for a specific tunnel under construction.

  • In this study, the relationships between the displacement and stress of the tunnel using various analysis methods were compared with monitoring results carried out during construction and maintenance monitoring. The behavior of tunnel were measured in the subway tunnel passing comparative soft the weathering and analyzed both security and mechanical characteristics of the tunnel lining. With the results of simplified monitoring observed in top heading and bench excavation tunnel, it is confirmed that the crown settlement is larger than the surface settlement. it is interesting to note that the crown settlement and the crown shotcrete lining stress are widely used monitoring items for the back analysis. It is analyzed that the residual water pressure applied in the drainage type tunnel is reasonable.

  • In a shotcrete support system, the cooperation of the ground and the shotcrete lining makes it possible to transfer the shear stress to the shotcrete lining, which is dedicated to form a stable structure. In this study, a homogeneous model ground with constant strength was produced by using gypsum and the tunnel was excavated with a top heading method under the definite initial stress. During the excavation, the stress in the ground around the tunnel and the deformation of shotcrete lining were measured, The tensile stress was generated in tangential direction in the ground near the tunnel and in the shotcrete lining due to tunnel excavation. This shows the unified behavior of the ground and shotcrete lining, which is the most typical characteristic of the shotcrete support. As a result, the rates of in-situ stress during the excavation at a top boundary line was 9% and at top arch heading 15%. It was 48% right after excavating the heading and 94% before cutting the bench.

  • Currently, the shotcrete used as basic support in the tunnel excavation, has the advantages of maintaining high-level strength in condition of early shooting with thin thickness based on the excavation characteristics of rock mass. Therefore supreme equipment and materials were developed and the great strides have continued. Also, the development of measurement technology and the rocks behaviors of undergound are evaluated in detail and the designs of strength and thickness are made. The reinforcement materials development of new material is carried on. Most of the coal fly ash produced in Korea fire power plant is fly ash and bottom mash. Fly ash has been producing to be applied in many fields such as cement, aggregate, construction, civil, agriculture and fisheries. Also a lot of experiments are actively on the way. Therefore in this experiment, in order to use the fly ash mixed with concrete as a material of shotcrete, the experiment was performed in the best content to reduce the compression strength and the shooting rebound ratio of the excavated surface to use fly ash as a substitute material of concrete. As a result, when 15%.wt substitution was made to the fly ash, about 10% of compression strength and 6% of rebound ratio was reduced.
