These studies was conducted to investigate the influence of ALLELOPATHIC effects of upland weeds on crops and soil microorganisms. The aqueous extract of weed residues were used to identify physiological controll of plant and microorganisms. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The aqueous extract of weeds controlled germination and growth of plant, especially the 5%-extract of Potulaca oleracea suppressed the growth of soybean about 8~12%. 2. The 5%-extract of Potulaca oleracea inhibited effect of phytosynthesis of soybean about 60%. 3. The move the concetration of phenolic compounds in soil, the less a number of actinomycetes and bacteria. 4. The number of soil microorganism(fusarium oxysporum spp.) were decresed as to the concentration of vanillic acid was increased.
Volatile terpenes responsible for allelopathic activity in four weed species were identified using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry. Artemisia asiatica Nakai contained 26 volatile terpenes, consisting of 16 monoterpenes and 10 sesquiterpenes, whereas there were only four terpenes in Trifolium repens L. and three terpenes each in Portulaca oleracea L. and Capsella bursa-pastoris (L,) Medik. Suspected allelochemics were ${\alpha}$-phellandrene, 1,8-cineole, limonene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, borneol, selinene, and caryophyllene in A. asiatica, ${\alpha}$-pinene and ${\beta}$-caryophyllene in T. repens, and ${\alpha}$-pinene in C. bursapastoris. No these compounds were found in P. oleracea.
The compatibility of herbicide use for soybean cultivation was evaluated from the field and pot trials. Comparing with the check plot, the effects of herbicides at their several doses on the phytotoxic stability of crop plants and on the weeding efficacy were studied. Statistically significant differences were found among the doses, and not among herbicides and interactions between herbicide and dose. Risks on the compatibility for crop plant and weeding efficacy were recognized from the excess-dosed treatments of herbicides tried.
About 140 weed species belonging to 42 families occurring in summer were observed in Ulreung island. The Compositae was the most wildely occurring family covering 27 weed species, followed by 21 species in Graminae, 9 in Polygonaceae, 7 in Leguminosae, and 7 in Labiatae etc. In terms of the lands classified, about 60 species in 26 families were observed in the cultivated and the medical crops grown areas, respectively, and 116 species in 40 families occurred in the non-cultivated land like the vicinity of the cultivated area and 94 species in 34 families in the valley. No. of species and families were much greater in the non-cutivated land than those of the cultivated one. The most dominant weed species in both the cultivated and its vicinity in Ulreung island were Digitaria sanguinalis, followed by Portulaca oleracea, Polygonum hydropiper, Equisetum arvensis, Artemisia princeps, Commetina communis, Setaria viridis in order. Community analysis was done by the method of Toyohara in two cultivated lands such as the general crop land and the medical herb crop grown land, and two non-cultivated areas such as the vicinity of the cultivated land and valley. The cultivated land consisted of the communites of P. hydropiper and Cyperus amuricus, including Bidens tripartita in P. hydropiper community. The medical crop grown land composed of three major communities like P. hydropiper, Amaranthus mangostanus and Sonchus asper in which A. mangostanus and S. media were presented in the ecoton, indicating community being transiting. In the non-cultivated areas like the vicinity of crop land, the communities of Erigeron annuus, P. oleracea, and Oxalis corniculata were dominant, and Dystaenia takeshimana was included in the community of E. annuus and Stellan'a aquatica in P. oleracea community. In the valley, Ranunculus quelpaertensis community was existed in between the communities of Sonchus asper and Plantago asiatica.

This study was conducted from March 21 to July 9 in 2004 at JeJu Island to investigate the effect of different particle sizes (0.3-0.5, 0.5-0.8, 0.8-1.0, 1.0-1.5 and 1.5-2.0mm) on creeping bentgrass vegetation. The results obtained were summarized as follows; plant height became shorter as particle size was increased from 0.3-0.5 to 1.5-2.0 n. Root length, Minolta SPAD-502 chlorophyll reading value, leave and root weight were directly proportional plant height response. Degree of land cover and density of creeping bentgrass decreased as the particle size was increased from 0.3-0.5 to 1.5-2.0nm, and degree land cover and density of weed increased. The number of weed species were increased as the sand particle size was increased. Then ranking of the dominant weeds were Portulaca oleracea, Trifolium repens and Cyperus amuricus (at 0.3-0.5 and 0.5-0.8mm particle size), Trifolium repens, Portulaca oleracea and Polygonum hydropiper (at 0.8-1.0mm particle size), Portulaca oleracea, Polygonum hydropiper and Poa annua (at 1.5-2.0mm particle size). Based on the these findings, the optimum sand particle size for growth of creeping bentgrass seems to be about 0.3-0.5m in volcanic ash soils of Jeju island.
In order to get basic information for establishing weed control methods in apple orchards, weed distribution was surveyed at 2 locations in Chungnam Province at 15 days intervals. In apple orchard 48 weed species (18 families) were distributed and Chenopodium album and Polygonum hydropiper were dominated and Digitana sanguinalis, Portulaca oleracea, and Erigeron canadensis were also abundant among them. Highest number of weeds emerged in April and dry weight of weeds were heavy in June and October, especially in summer broadleaf weeds and winter broadleaf weeds, and winter grasses were abundant in spring. Seasonal Shannon's diversity index(H'), maximum diversity(H max'), eveness (J') for the Shannon diversity index, and Simpson index were high in apple orchards. Interspecific competition was more severe than intraspecific competition.

This study was conducted to provide basic information for weed control by surveying the occurrence of weed species in upland crop fields in Gyeongnam province of Korea. The result of this survey, 55 weed species 21 families in barley fields, 56 weed species 22 families in garlic fields, 47 weed species 19 families in onion fields, 68 weed species 26 families in Chinese cabbage fields, 54 weed species 22 families in potato fields, 62 weed species 25 families in sweet potato fields, 87 weed species 29 families in red pepper fields, 79 weed species 28 families in corn fields, 84 weed species 29 families in soybean fields. The most dominant weed species in upland crop fields of Gyeongnam province were Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis 20.7% (barley fields), Cardamine flexuosa 12.3% (garlic fields), Chenopodium ficifolium 18.7% (onion fields), Portulaca oleracea 8.1% (Chinese cabbage fields), Chenopodium ficifolium 13% (potato fields), Digitaria ciliaris 12.6% (sweet potato fields and red pepper fields) and Digitaria ciliaris 11.3% (corn fields), 13.2% (soybean fields). This information could be useful for establishment of future weed control methods in Gyeongnam province.
A cultivar of taro(Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta Engl.), Tosutoran was cultivated with planting density 60×30 cm at the field of Kwang-ju located in Kyeong-ki province in 1989. The purpose of this experiment was to attain the basic information about the pattern of weed occurrence and the effect of weed control on yield by various treatments in taro field. Ethalfluralin(35 EC), Clomazone(47.1 EC), Paraquat(24.5 Lq.) fb Ethalfluralin and Paraquat fb Clomazone were treated except for untreated plot and hand weeding plot. Weeds occurred were 15 species in 12 families, the dominant weed species were Echinochloa crus-galli, Potulaca oleracea, Acalypha australis in taro field. Weed control effects were higher in combination treatments than in single treatments so the yield was higher in combination treatment than in single treatment. Yield of untreated plot was reduced to 91.8% by comparison with that of hand-weeding plot.
