  • This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Fraxinus rhynchophylla extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, the Fraxinus rhynchophylla was extracted with methanol at room temperatures, and fractionation of the methanol extracts from Fraxinus rhynchophylla was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and methanol respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Fraxinus rhynchophylla extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The ethyl acetate extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The synergistic effect has been found in combined extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Portulaca aleracea as compared to each extracts alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The ethyl acetate extract of Fraxinus rhynchophylla showed strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of ethyl acetate extract from Fraxinus rhynchophylla retarded the growth of S. aureus more than 24 hours and Shigella dysenteriae up to 36 hours. The ethyl acetate extracts of Fraxinus rhynchophylla has been shown the antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae.

  • Establishment of mechanized soybean production system without herbicide is required for organic soybean production in recent. Effects of mechanized soybean planting with partial tillage between growing rye living mulch, which was sown in April or early May, on weed suppression, soybean early growth and yield were investigated with different rye sowing dates and locations in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Effect of rye living mulch on weed suppression at 40~50 days after soybean planting was high as much as 70~90% regardless of rye sowing dates. In particular, a strong suppression effect on the occurrence and growth of Echinochloa crus-galli which occupied 60~80% of total weed biomass was observed. Rye living mulch sown on April 9, of which biomass was more than that sown on April 27, inhibited soybean early growth severely and reduced soybean grain yield in 2007. However, soybean grain yield was no t reduced despite suppression of early growth of soybean plant by living mulch sown during from late April to early May compared with conventional planting. Rye sowing before late April was not proper considering tendency of weed occurrence in spring because of unfavorable changes in weed suppression, early growth and grain yield of soybean according to amount of living mulch.

  • The objective of this study was to find herbicidal compounds in the essential oil of palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini). Of essential oils from basil (Ocimum basilicum), blackpepper (Piper nigrum), clary sage (Salvia sclarea), ginger (Zingiber pfficinale), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), nutmag (Myristica fragrance), palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), sage (Salvia leucantha), and spearmint (Mentha spicta), the herbicidal activity of palmarosa essential oil, which was determined by a seed bioassay using rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), was highest ($GR_{50}$ value, $201{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$). In palmarosa essential oil, 11 volatile organic chemicals were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectometry with solid-phase micro-extraction apparatus and the major constituents were geraniol (40.23%), geraniol acetate (15.57%), cis-ocimene (10.79%), and beta-caryophyllene (8.72%). The $GR_{50}$ values of geraniol, citral, nerol, and geranyl acetate were 151, 224, 452, and $1,214{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, respectively. In greenhouse and field experiments, foliar application of palmarosa essential oil at the level of $80kg\;ha^{-1}$ controlled weeds effectively. Overall results of this study showed that the herbicidal activity of palmarosa essential oil could be due to geraniol and citral which had lower $GR_{50}$ values.

  • BACKGROUND: The field margins, which are uncultivated area of permanent vegetation located adjacent to field, play an important role in enhancing biodiversity in the agricultural ecosystem. This study focused on floristic characteristics on dry field margins in Korea Peninsula. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study was conducted at margins of 196 dry fields in 32 areas in 8 provinces in May and September 2013. The vascular plants of the dry field margins were listed 347 taxa which contain 73 families, 219 genera, 311 species, 1 subspecies, 30 varieties and 5 forms. Of these 347 taxa, 48 taxa were woody plants and 299 taxa were herbaceous plants. Among total 73 families, Compositae (17.6%) was the most dominant family, and followed Gramineae (15.9%), Polygonaceae (5.8%), Leguminosae (4.9%) and Cyperaceae (3.8%). Based on relative frequency values of survey fields, the appearance frequency of Digitaria ciliaris (89.8%) was the highest, and followed Acalypha australis (86.2%), Artemisia princeps (82.1%), Commelina communis (80.6%) and Portulaca oleracea (80.6%). Disturbance index of dry field margins was 55.0% at national level, and Gangwon region was the highest among the 8 regions at regional level. Life form spectrum was determined to be $Th-R_5-D_4-etype$. CONCLUSION: These results will be used fundamental data for studies to improve or even stabilize the current state of plant biodiversity in agricultural environments.

  • The objective was to know if corn growers at Hongchcel County, Kangwon-do, where corn is the major agricultural product, control weeds effectively and use herbicides properly to control weeds. Sixty-eight corn growers at Hongchon were participated in this survey. Corn growers have noxious weeds, such as hairy carbgrass, common purslane, lambsquarters, Asiatic dayflower, mugwort and barnyard grass in their corn fields. Forty-four percents of the answered corn growers control weeds by hand weeding, and the others by a combination of physical and chemical methods. Corn growers have a preference of paraquat and alachlor for a pre-emergence treatment (94% of the answered) and of paraquat, glufosinate, glyphosate and fluazifop-P-butyl for a post-emergence treatment (87% of the answered). Corn growers did not select and use herbicides in a proper manner. fifty-four percent of the answered corn fevers selected herbicides by their own experience and 18 percent by neighbors recommendation. Herbicides were not selected and used in a proper manner by corn growers: 54 percent of the answered selected herbicides by the experience of growers and 18 percent by the recommendation of neighbors. In addition, a half of the answered applied over two-fold higher amounts of herbicides than the recommended rate. With these improper- selection and use of herbicides, 37 percent of the answered have experienced the crop damage and 42 percent the herbicide poisoning. We conclude that the development of the educational program for the proper selection and use of herbicides is needed for corn growers in Kangwon-do.

  • The phenolic compounds identified from rye and wheat residues seemed to be p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, ferulic, salicylic and syringic acids. Total phenol content of rye and wheat straw determined at heading stage was 0.1803% and 0.1702%, respectively. Total phenol content in straw was higher than that of root at all growth stages. The germination and growth of plants, such as Oryza sativa, Echinochloa creugalli, Cyperus serotinus, Portulaca oleacea, Amaranthus retroflexus, Digitaria saguinalis, and C. album were inhibited by treatments of authentic phenolic compounds as the concentrations increased. However, at the early stage, the germination and shoot growth of P. distinctus were markedly stimulated by them, and then the further growth of shoot and root was markedly inhibited by the prolonged treatment of phenolic compounds. The aqueous extracts from rye and wheat straw completely inhibited the germination of A. retroflexus and C. album at a high concentrations. The content of starch and protein in bulbs of P. distinctus was lower in the p-hydroxybenzoic acid treated plot, at $10^{-2}M$, than the untreated control.

  • Weed flora and floristic composition were reviewed in lowland rice field and upland crop area. For lowland rice field weed flora was not much changed since 1971. About 29 weed species belonged to 18 families were occurred. However, floristic composition of dominant weed species has greatly changed mainly due to introduction of herbicides. The predominant weed species in 1971 when herbicide was not used were Rotala indica, Eleocharis acicularis, Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli, while these for in 1991 were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagittaria pygmaea, S. trifolia, Echinochloa crus-galli and M, vaginalis, respectively. In 1981 weed survey, E. crus-galli was no longer troblesome weed. However, this species became important again thereafter by introduction of herbicide mixtures with pyrazolate, bensulfuron-methyl or pyrazosulfuronethyl. For upland crop area, 216 weed species belonged to 46 families were recorded. One hundred and sixtyfive of these were grown in winter crop area while 189 weed species occurred in summer crop area, respectively. Among these, 138 weed species were grown in both crop seasons. In general, summer crops had less number of weed species compared to winter crops. Even though the dominant weed species varied by crop the most common weeds were Chenopodium album, Alopecunrs aqualis, Stellaria alsine and S, media for winter crops and Digitaria sanguinalis, Portulaca oleracea, Chenopodium album and Acalypha australis for summer crops, respectively.

  • To elucidate occurrence patterns of $C_4$ plants in agroecosystems, we surveyed flora inside fields and embankments in 222 sites in farming lands in summer and fall, 2013. We also observed Kranz anatomy and analyzed carbon stable isotope to classify photosynthesis types. Our study observed total 54 species of $C_4$ plants in 33 genera and 9 families of vascular plants besides cultivated crops occurring in farming fields. The most common species was Portulaca oleracea L. followed by Digitaria ciliaris and Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) P. Beauv. var. crusgalli among the $C_4$ plants. The ratios of $C_3$ and $C_4$ species number to total number of species tended to maintain constant regardless of survey times and habitat types. The proportion of $C_4$ species to the total number of species were more influenced by the number of $C_3$ species than those of other types in the surveyed sites. Sizes of cultivation areas did not affect the proportions of $C_4$ plants. Increasing number of simultaneous weeding methods, especially with cutting method, appeared to decrease the number of $C_3$ plants. On the other hand, as the number of cultivated crops increased, both $C_3$ and $C_4$ plants increased but the proportions of $C_4$ species remained. We interpret our results that proportion of $C_4$ species in agroecosystems, appear to be dependent on the number of $C_3$ species, which in turn, appear to be affected by cultivation methods.
