A Critical Analysis of Literature for Consumer Health Information Services in Public Libraries (문헌분석을 통해서 도출한 공공도서관 소비자건강정보(CHI) 서비스 연구)

  • Due to the growth of people's use of the Internet as well as interests in health, people's needs of health information have rapidly increased in public libraries. Nevertheless, there are few studies in Korea about users' needs for health information and services that public libraries can offer to support these user groups. In the current study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted in order to understand the role of public libraries and librarians in serving users with health information and to identify the types of consumer health information(CHI) services available to users in public libraries. As for the CHI services that public libraries can offer for users, the current study emphasizes and discusses the directions and guidelines for improving the following six approaches: 1) CHI collection and information resource building, 2) CHI reference services, 3) CHI user education and training program development, 4) CHI services for minority/disability/cultural diversity groups of users, 5) CHI outreach program development, and 6) CHI network development with medical libraries, academic libraries, hospital, and medical institutions and associations. Although most of the discussion in the current study centers on cases and services provided in the United States or other countries, findings would be used to inform the importance of CHI services in public libraries, and to design and develop CHI services in Korea.

A Study on the Effectiveness of CHI-Related Education for Public Librarians (공공도서관 사서대상 소비자건강정보(CHI) 관련 교육전후의 인식변화 연구)

  • Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Librarians should improve their health literacy as well as that of their users' in order to help library users make well-informed decisions. In this study, we developed educational programs related to CHI (Consumer Health Information) suitable for Korean public librarians' professional development. We measured the effectiveness of the training after its administration and found areas in which improvement was necessary. As a result, this study found the following effects on public librarians after they completed the training: improved the public librarians' familiarity with CHI-related terms; increased education for users and diversification of resources; diversification and specialization of information sources which librarians used to perform CHI-related services; reduced time for reference services; increased professional knowledge in this area. However, this research represented the first time CHI-related education for public librarians was performed in Korea, and therefore many limitations were present in the education instructor, the diversity of subjects, and the methodology. Development of more advanced CHI-related education programs is required.

  • 기능성 꿀 및 그 생산에 대하여 관심이 있다면 우선 벌과 꽃과 꿀의 등식관계(벌=꽃=꿀)를 이해하고 벌꿀의 이용역사를 고찰하여 향후 이용 변화추위에 따라 소비자을이 선호하는 꿀을 생산하여야 할 것으로 본다. 인간에 대한 의학이 발달은 꿀에 대한 소비자들의 인식을 변화시키고 있으며, 건강 증진 및 장수를 위한 well-being 생활의 추구에 따라 식생활도 변화하고 있기 때문에 꿀에 대한 재평가가 요구되고 있다. 따라서 수명과 관련하여 건강증진에 유익한 기능성 꿀 생산은 매우 적절한 대응전력이라고 생각한다. 기능성 꿀벌 생산하려면 꿀에 대한 성분과 특성을 이해하고 기능성물질의 탐색과 더불어 벌을 통한 생산방법을 개발하여 가치 있는 기능성 꿀을 생산하여야 함으로 기능성 꿀 및 생산에 관한 정보를 제공하고자 한다.

Analysis of Confidence and Satisfaction Degrees for Korean Health Information Web-Sites (국내 건강정보 웹사이트의 신뢰성과 만족도 현황 분석)

  • We analyzed 18 representative Korean health information related web-sites for assessing confidence and satisfaction. The 18 representative web-sites are selected by rank information of a ranking web-site for Korean web-sites. In order to analyze confidence and satisfaction degrees on the 18 web-sites, we used 19 assessment criteria and 5 important elements of our former research paper. In the results, we found out the present states of confidence and satisfaction degrees of Korean health information web-sites and we presented methods for utilizing these results for web-site administrators and health consumers.

Undergraduates' Use of Social Media for Health Information (대학생들의 소셜 미디어를 이용한 건강정보 추구행태에 관한 연구)

  • The present study surveyed 225 undergraduates to examine their social media use behaviors and their perceptions of usefulness, trustworthiness, and privacy of social media for seeking and sharing health information. 151 respondents reported using social media for health information while 74 reported not using it for health matters. Results show that the most popular medium were social Q&As, followed by blogs and social networking sites. Age, gender, school year, and the presence of a health problem were associated with the social media use behaviors. This study suggests the potential of social media as a desired channel for providing health information to undergraduates.

Restaurateur's Willingness to Participate in the Healthy Restaurant Program in Seoul (서울시 외식경영자의 건강식당사업 참여의지)

  • This study examined the restaurateur's willingness to participate in the healthy restaurant program. Using a structured self-administered questionnaire, data on subjects' personal, business and management characteristics, willingness to participate in the healthy restaurant program and the perception of healthy restaurant program were collected from 145 restaurateurs in Seoul. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression were used in the analysis. Half of respondents (50.3%) were willing to participate in the healthy restaurant program. Years of business (OR = 2.584, 95% CI = 1.049-6.369), consideration of food quality (OR = 0.321, 95% CI = 0.147-0.702), and awareness of importance of nutrition or health information (OR = 2.416, 95% CI = 1.082-5.391) were significant indicators for restaurateur's willingness to participate in the healthy restaurant program. Hence, strategic activities to inform the benefit of healthy restaurant program for both restaurateurs and consumers are necessary.

The Consumer Information Improvement for Teens' Oral Health (청소년의 구강건강을 위한 소비자정보 개발)

  • Health is the most important factor in the Quality of life. Without appropriate treatment, dental caries could have serious effects on self-esteem, nutrition, and health of a person throughout his/her life. The purpose of this study was to investigate ways to develop a consumer information program that could help improve teens' oral health. To develop an effective information program, we surveyed 1) how teens feel about oral health information in the market, 2) how judiciously they use their information, and 3) how they actually apply the information to practice. On the other hand, we investigated relationships between dietary patterns and dental caries among middle school students. The results indicate a serious lack of oral health information for middle school students. Moreover, we found that the intake of vegetables, fruits and legumes prevents dental caries. Using these results, we developed a system for organizing and conveying the oral health information for teens.

A Model for Evaluating Confidence and Satisfaction of Health Information Web-Sites (건강정보 웹사이트의 신뢰성과 만족도 평가 모델)

  • In this paper, we proposed a model to evaluate confidence and satisfaction of health information web-sites visited by general health consumers. In order to propose the evaluation model, lots of foreign and domestic researches are investigated and analyzed. Based on these analyses, confidence and satisfaction standards for the model are proposed. A process for evaluation and a method for calculation of evaluation value by the standards are proposed, too. The proposed model can be utilized as a tool for analyzing conventional health information web-sites and can be utilized as check lists for developments in case of health information web-sites under construction.

Usability and Accessibility Evaluation of South Korean and American Health-Related Websites for the Elderly (노인들을 위한 건강관련 웹사이트의 사용성과 접근성 평가)

  • 연구목적: 노인을 위한 건강정보 웹사이트들이 사용성과 접근성을 높이기 위해 지켜야 할 디자인 요소를 어떻게 반영하고 있는지 평가·비교함으로써 개선 방향을 제언하고자 하였다. 연구방법: 국내 및 미국에서 개발된 노인 대상의 건강정보 웹사이트를 각각 9개씩 선정하였다. 근거 기반의 웹디자인 지침서인 Make Your Website Senior Friendly: Checklist와 Research-based Web Design & Usability Guideline을 통합 수정하여 얻은 4개 영역의 평가 항목 48개를 적용해 두 명의 평가자가 선정된 총 18개 웹사이트를 평가하였다. 연구결과: '가독성' 영역 중 서체 선택, 줄 간격, 배경색과 글자색 선택 등은 양호하였으나 국내 웹사이트들 중에는 글자 크기가 조절되지 않는 경우가 빈번하였다. '정보의 표현과 구성' 영역에서 다수의 웹사이트들은 정보 배치 등이 우수하고 소비자 용어를 사용하는 노력을 보였다. 그러나 일부 국내 웹사이트들은 프린트 기능을 제공하지 않거나, 노인들의 저하된 인지 능력을 배려하려는 노력이 부족하였다. '미디어 사용' 영역에서 국내 웹사이트들은 글자 외에 다른 매체를 사용하는 빈도가 미국 웹사이트들에 비해 낮았고, 시청각 매체를 사용할 때는 동일한 내용을 문자로도 볼 수 있도록 하라는 권고안을 준수하지 않았다. '내비게이션과 검색의 용이성'에서는 메뉴나 링크의 명칭이 명확하며, 이용 중에도 쉽게 홈페이지로 돌아갈 수 있도록 구성되었다. 그러나 다수의 국내 사이트들이 사이트맵을 제공하지 않거나, 검색어의 철자오류 등에 대한 배려가 부족하였다. 결론: 국내 웹사이트들은 미국 웹사이트들에 비해 노인들의 사용성과 접근성을 높이는 것으로 밝혀진 연구 근거들을 제대로 반영하지 못하고 있었다. 노인 대상의 인터넷과 웹을 활용한 교육이 지속적으로 증가할 것이므로, 그 효과성을 높이기 위해 간호사들은 정보의 질 뿐만 아니라 디자인 측면의 중요성을 인식하고 실천할 수 있어야겠다.
