  • Generational contracts are specified into public pensions based on generational solidarity. The Korean National Pension has been reformed with a focus on generational equity with a narrow meaning related to contribution rate and benefit level. As a result, the Korean National Pension has only emphasized generational equity and not contributed to generational solidarity. We investigate changes in the content of the generational contract and propose to reconstruct generational contract to contribute to solidarity with a more comprehensive perspective. A new social contract by reformed pension system should not concentrate on narrowed generational equity. It should be reconstructed in the direction of enhancing efficacy and the stability of generational solidarity with an emphasis on social sustainability. Investment into the next generation would be one of many policy measures to decrease conflicts around intergenerational redistribution and improve the financial stability of the public pension by creating population structure and labor market changes.

  • This study analyze the intergenerational transmission of poverty in Korea, using the first wave of Korea Welfare Panel Study. For this analysis, I produced poverty transition tables across generation and estimated logistic models to explore the effects of parent's poverty on the children's adulthood poverty. As the results, I found that parent's poverty reduced children's education level and then the low education level increased the likelihood that children experience poverty in their adulthood. In other words, parent's poverty might increase children's adulthood poverty through the mediating effects of education level. This mediating effects were also identified in the analyses by group and cohort. From the analyses by group, daughters rather than sons, those from urban rather than rural area, and the older cohort rather than younger cohort showed greater intergenerational transmission of poverty.

  • The purpose of the study is to examine the factors that influence on the Koreans' intergenerational communication. A survey was conducted with university students in their 20s, and the impacts of filial piety and indigenous cultural factors(confucianism and Chemyon) on intergenerational communication styles and intergeneral communication satisfaction were tested. Results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that politeness and confucianism had positive influence on intergenerational communication while deference and Chmyon had negative influence on intergenerational communication. The indigenous cultural variables increased total R2 significantly, proving the crucial impact of confucianism and Chemyon on the Koreans' intergenerational communication. Finally, male students perceived higher level of communicative satisfaction than female students in the intergenerational communication context.

  • This research aims to examine the difference in participation motivation, participation experience and identity negotiation between generations of overseas Koreans in the National Sports Festival(NSF). The subjects for this study were 360 overseas Koreans who took part in the 100th NSF held in Seoul in 2019. The results are as follows; First, while the first generation participated in the NSF because of visiting family and maintaining Korean identity, the second generation took part in the event for self-realization. Second, the second generation had more negative experiences than the second generation during the NSF. Third, while the first generation negotiated more identity with origin, the second generation had more identity with settlement.

  • This study is about university students' perception of intergenerational communication and its affecting factors. Based on literatures on intergenerational communication, the effect of stereotype on intergenerational satisfaction was testified and the mediating role of intergroup anxiety and the moderating role of communication competence were also analysed. Results showed that the effect of stereotype was mediated by intergroup anxiety, and the paths were different depending on the gender and communication competence. In the case of the male student group and the group with high communication ability, stereotypes affected intergroup anxiety, but intergroup anxiety did not directly affect intergenerational communication satisfaction. On the other hand, in the case of the female student group and the group with low communication skills, intergroup anxiety had significant effect on communication satisfaction. Also, it was found that the content of stereotype had an important effect on intergenerational communication satisfaction.

  • This paper aims to examine the causes and features of current generational conflicts in Korea and to discuss their implications. The data utilized in the study include collective data on presidential and general elections and secondary data obtained from empirical research. The findings are as follows. First, generational power conflicts express itself by struggles among generations concerning the timing of political power transfer. An average age of assemblymen decreases consistently regardless of changes in overriding ideological atmosphere in general - conservative vs. liberal. Second, ideological conflicts among generations were highly intensified around 2002 presidential election, but gradually moderated since 2004 general election. The conflicts might be re-intensified if a set of conditions were satisfied. Third, cultural conflicts between older and younger generations were contrasted around three cultual axes: economic growth with top priority vs. consumerism, collectivism vs. individualism, and authoritarianism vs. post-authoritarianism. To ease strained relations between generations, intergenerational programs were suggested.
