  • Although the need for global citizenship education (GCE) has been emphasized globally, Korea lacks GCE for child welfare workers who affect children's global citizenship. In response, this study analyzed the reality of educational needs by (a) investigating domestic and international GCE policies, (b) doing the in-depth interviews with experts, and (c) surveying workers. According to the policy analysis, GCE in Korea has been mainly conducted through the school system but it was conducted in various ways worldwide. The need to expand GCE in Korea was also emphasized in the in-depth interview. The survey analysis showed that the path relationship among awareness-interest-desire to participate in GCE was significant, indicating that increasing awareness and interest for GCE was effective in real action. Based on this, we confirmed that GCE is a necessary education for child welfare workers, emphasized the need to raise awareness of GCE based on the AIDA model, and presented indicators that can be used for GCE.

  • Hans Freudenthal made important contributions to algebraic topology and geometry. He also made significant contributions in history of mathematics and mathematics education. In the 1970s, his intervention prevented the Netherlands from the movement of "new math". He had a very important role as a founder of realistic mathematics education and became famous internationally by that. Because he raised the profile of ICMI strongly, Bass used the expression 'Freudenthal Era' for the period that Freudenthal was the president of ICMI. Now many mathematics educator agree to use the Freudenthal Era when they mention about the history of ICMI. In this paper, we present on the life of Freudenthal and his contributions for mathematics education, especially ICMI.

  • This study aims to examine the effects of student's individual background and school factors on global citizenship and to provide some suggestions to improve global citizenship education in Korea. To achieve this purpose, we used International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2009 data which studied student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as student perceptions, and attitudes related to civics and citizenship from 38 countries. The data was analyzed with a 2-level Hierarchical Linear Model. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Girls had more positive attitudes than boys toward gender equality and equal rights for different ethnic groups and immigrants. This study also showed that the level of student's global citizenship depended on whether home language was different from test language. Parental educational attainment and parental occupational status generally affected the level of student's global citizenship and students' interest in political and social issues appeared to be strongly affected by their parents. These findings suggest that parents play important role in improving global citizenship. At the school level, teacher-student relationships and the value of student participation had positive effects on global citizenship. Therefore, in order to implement global citizenship education in schools, it is necessary to consider the change of school climate.

In the textbooks, the subjects of the cultural diversity education are mainly based on the curriculum standards, the education area of the 7th grade is the 'human community life', the education area of the 8th grade is the origin and development of the Chinese civilization, Suggesting the scope of the theme 'harmonious coexistence with the world'. In order to analyze cultural diversity education in response to the demands of the times, we analyzed three factors such as diversity, identity, and interrelationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a global citizenship education (GCE) program nurturing responsibility and proactive attitude as a global citizen. A storytelling based GCE program was developed using stories stimulating empathy, immersion, reflection, and change of perspective regarding global issues. An 8 hour program was developed, and implemented on 11th grade students (n=40). Students either listened to stories told by the teacher, or created stories on their own. Paired t-test results indicated an overall increase in global citizenship and interest in learning it. This study demonstrates that storytelling methods can help students understand abstract content easily by presenting it in a concrete way with context, increase fun in learning, and enable the use of various instructional strategies and media sources.

  • The purpose of this study is to search for a rationale of world geography curriculum. Elementary school children tend to get impressionistic and distorted information about other countries through snapshot TV programs. But they need to get more balanced understanding about them from the perspective of each country. Children's judgment about other countries, favorable or unfavorable, tends to be emotional, based on the first-order conditions of life in those regions, such as atmosphere, food, and habitat, and the symbolics of the place. But their systematic understanding about the relationship between their own life and the life of other locations or countries tends to be meager. It seems to be partly due to the practice of co-centric curricular construction. The geography curriculum may have to be in relation to other countries, from the regional geography of the third grade on.
