  • This study examined how drivers of different cultural orientations(individualism vs. collectivism) attribute the cause(dispositional vs. situational) of four simulated driving situations which were varied in types(cutting-in and sudden-stop by the other driver) and differential emphasis on other the other driver's driving attitude or situational factor. The results showed the followings. First, the drivers generally showed higher attribution scores on the dispositional factor than the situational factor, except for the 'sudden-stop: situation emphasis' scenario condition. Second, when drivers' cultural orientation and attribution styles were considered together, it was found that, except for the 'cutting-in: disposition emphasis' scenario condition. the drivers of collectivism tended to attribute more to situational factor than the drivers of individualism, In contrast, the drivers of individualism showed higher attribution scores on dispositional factor than situational factor in all driving scenario conditions. Implication and suggestion were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide information that will help understand unique characteristics of mathematically gifted students and that can be utilized for special programs for mathematically gifted students, by investigating difference and relationship between attribution styles and attitude toward mathematics of mathematically gifted students and those of regular students. For that purpose, 202 mathematically gifted students and 415 regular students in 5th and 6th grades at elementary schools were surveyed in terms of attribution styles and attitude toward mathematics, and the result of the study is as follows. First, as for attribution styles, there was no difference between gifted students and regular students in terms of grade and gender, but there was significant difference in sub factors because of giftedness. Second, there was not significant difference between grades. but there was significant difference in sub factors between genders. Mathematically gifted students were more positive than regular students in every sub factor excepting gender role conformity, and especially they showed higher confidence and motivation. Third, according to the result of correlation analysis, there was significant static correlation between inner tendencies and attitude toward mathematics with both groups. The gifted group showed higher correlation between attribution of effort and attitude toward mathematics and inner tendencies and confidence than the regular group. The gifted group showed higher correlation in sub factors, and especially there was high static correlation between attribution of talent and confidence, and attribution of effort and motivation. Fourth, according to the result of multiple regression analysis, inner tendencies showed significant relation to attitude toward mathematics with both groups, and especially the influence of attribution of effort was high. Both attribution of effort and attribution of talent were higher in the gifted group than the regular group, and attribution of effort had a major influence on practicality and attribution of talent had a major influence on confidence.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the factor giving effect to department selection, learning adaptation and attributional-style after entering school by selecting university students as targets and help high school students who will graduate soon and university students select department and direction. Those were analyzed by using 287 questionnaire data from June 1 to June 30, 2011. The study result revealed that 64.5% of students considered 'popularity and employment prospect' first when they select department. Generally, it was researched that when selecting department, 68.8% of women and 78.7% of health major considered 'popularity and employment prospect'(P<0.05, P<0.01). For learning adaptation and attribution trend of each major, health major showed that learning adaptation was high when motif was high and application score was high and for the relationship with attributional-style, health major showed higher internal attributional-style, showing significant difference(P<0.05). When synthesizing the results above, it is necessary to develop and use the program that can develop internal attribution trend of students on the basis of attributional-style. For planned and careful selection, it is necessary to perform synthetic consulting through direction search program that considers entrance period of middle school or high school, general affairs of university or direction guide to increase department or direction adaptation in the future.

  • This study examined the effects of elderly care facility social workers' work environment (role conflict, role ambiguity, role overload, and adequacy of the reward system) and personal tendency (emotional empathy, cognitive empathy, external attribution, and internal attribution) on their burnout (emotional burnout, low personal achievement, and depersonalization about clients) and suggested strategies for preventing burnout in social workers at elderly care facilities. For this purpose, we conducted a questionnaire survey of social workers working at institutions designated as elderly long-term care facilities and collected a total of 312 questionnaires. According to the results of analyzing the data using a structural equation model, among the sub-factors of work environment, role ambiguity had a significant positive effect on low personal achievement and depersonalization about clients, role conflict on emotional burnout, and role overload on depersonalization about clients. Among the sub-factors of personal tendency, cognitive empathy and internal attribution had a significant negative effect on low personal achievement, and external attribution had a significant positive effect on emotional burnout and depersonalization about clients. This study is meaningful in that it illuminated social workers' burnout not only from the aspect of work environment but also from that of personal tendency.

  • This study explored the relationship of children's perceived social support and locus of control to their self-esteem. Subjects were 190 5th grade children. Instruments were the revised Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (1967), Dubow and Ullman's Social Support Appraisal Scale (1989), and Crandall's Intellectual Achievement Responsibility (1965). Data were analysed by t-tests and Pearson's correlations. Children with high perceived social support had higher self-esteem than children with low perceived social support. Children who attributed their success to internal factors had high self-esteem; children who attributed their success to external factors had low self-esteem. Successful children who attributed their success to external factors had low self-esteem, regardless of their social support level. Children who attributed their success to their abilities or hard work had high self-esteem only if they received high social support.
