  • Butylated hydroxyanisole(BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT), butyl-p-hydroxy-benzoate(POBB) and sodium benzoated(SB) were evaluated for their effects on the growth of three Aspergillus strains and two yeast strains(Torulopsis etchellsii and Candida diddensii). The growth of Torulopsis etchellsii and Candida diddensii was completely inhibited by 100 ppm of BHA or POBB. As little as 50 ppm of BHA and POBB significantly inhibited the cell growth. The growth of Torulopsis etchellsii and Candida diddensii was not inhibited by 100 ppm of BHT or SB. BHT and SB did not inhibit the growth and sporulation of three Aspergillus strains, whereas, in the presence of BHA and POBB, the growth of all three strains was affected. The higher the amounts of antioxidants were applied, the greater the inhibitory effects were observed.

  • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) were tested for their effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. Among the test microorganisms, the growth of three yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kloeckera apiculata, Cryptococcus hungaricus), three bacteria (Bacillus subtilu, Lactobacillus cases, Escherichia colt) and two molds (Aspergillus oryzae. Penicillium sp.) was progressively decreased as concentrations of BHA were increased. A. oyzae was completely inhibited with 100ppm of BHA and a majority of the test microorganisms (S. cerevisiae, K. apiculata. C. hungaricus, B. subtilis, A. oryzae) were completely inhibited by 150 ppm of BHA. The growths of L. casei, E. coli and Penicillium sp. were not affected as much as those of other microorganisms by BHA. Final cell yiedls were becoming lower as the concentration of BHA increased. The growth of C. hungaricus and L. casci was slightly inhibited by BHT. Other microorganisms were not effected by the test concentrations of BHT.

  • Bacteriostatic activity of secretory immumoglobulin A (SIgA) in human and bovine colostrums on enterotoxigenic type Salmonella was tested in the tissue culture medium. SIgA was used in $0.1{\sim}5.0mg/m{\ell}$ concentration with or without the addition of egg lysozyme tested for theirs bacteriostatic activites. 1. Bovine SIgA rich fraction with a large amount of $IgG_1$-dimer could be prepared from bovine colostrum of Holstein cows by anion exchange chromatography using DEAE-Sephadex A-50 and gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 and Sepharose 6B. 2. Human SIgA appeared to be the most bacteriostatic effect for all varieties of Salmonella in a range of $0.5{\sim}1.0mg/m{\ell}$ Bovine SIgA showed a marked bacteriostatic effect increased by increasing the concentration. Bovine IgG had not show bacteriostatic effect against both enterotoxigenic type Salmonella. Egg lysozyme as well as bovine SIgA also showed a marked bacteriostatic effect increased by increasing the concentration. 3. When the growth inhibition of human SIgA was tested by adding egg lysozyme with time interval, egg lysozyme showed bacteriostatic effect as compared with control. But human SIgA and adding with lysozyme showed slight the bacteriostatic effect. 4. When the growth inhibition of bovine SIgA was tested by adding egg lysozyme with time interval, all treatment against S. enteritidis showed bacteriostatic effect as compared with control In the case of S. typhinwrium, egg lysozyme showed a marked bacteriostatic effect as compared with control.

  • The protective effects of ethanol extracts from 5 seaweeds on the mutagenic and cytotoxic damage were evaluated. They were separately extracted using ethanol from dried samples at room temperature, and freeze-dried. The inhibition effects on the mutagenicity in Salmonella assay by Ames test and cancer cell inhibitory effect in HeLa cell, MCF-7 cell and SNU -638 cell by MTT assay were assayed. Seaweed fusiforme, sea tangle and green laver showed strong inhibitory effect against 2-nitrofluorene, sodium azide- or 2-anthramine-induced mutagenicities in Salmonella Typhimurium TA 98 and TA 100 at the level of 2.5 mg ethanol extract per plate. Cancer cell inhibitory effect was shown with all of the seaweed extracts. Green laver, sea mustard, sea tangle and seaweed fusiforme showed strong cytotoxicity against HeLa and MCF-7 cells, with inhibiting by $92\~93\%$ and $89\~92\%$, respectively. These data show that 5 seaweeds tested in this study might be potent functional foods for cancer prevention, and consumption of these seaweeds in adequate amount is recommended.

  • The antifungal effects of polyphosphates on growth of Candida albican and Trichophyton mentagrophytes were studied. The polyphosphates with chain length of 15, 45, and 75 were inhibitory to growth of fungi whereas no inhibition was shown by pyrophosphate. As chain length increase, the more inhibitory effect of the polyphosphates on fungal growth was observed. The concentration of polyphosphate at $800\;{\mu}g/ml$ completely inhibited the growth of fungus. Supplementation of the medium with $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ reduced inhibitory effect of polyphosphate on growth of C. albican treatment of C. albican with polyphosphate, the release of nucleic acid out of cell was observed. When C. albican exposed to polyphosphate were examined, profound changes of cell morphology such as cell swelling and surface blebs were observed. In addition, propidium iodide, membrane impermeable dye, stained the nucleus of C. albican cell treated with polyphosphate. Therefore, it is proposed that the antifungal activity of polyphosphate might be related with its chelation effect to essential cation components of fungal cell wall or membrane.

  • Among total 176 strains with antialgal effects isolated from So-ok stream in Korea, Pseudomonas aeruginosa AJ1 showed the highest removal efficiency for an algal species Microcystis aeruginosa (clear zone of diameter 50.0 mm on algal lawn after 20 days). The algal growth was suppressed even when the supernatant of AJ1 culture was applied, suggesting that extracellular substances are responsible for its antialgal activity. The removal activity of AJ1 was optimal under the following condition: pH 8, $30^{\circ}C$, and mannitol as a carbon source. The antialgal activity of AJ1 appeared to be dependent of the growth phase of M. aeruginosa, i.e., the highest at the early phase, but not its own phase. As expected, the algicidal effect was improved as the amount of the treated supernatant was increased; the highest removal efficiency (80.3%) was achieved when 40 ml/L of the supernatant was used. Interestingly, however, the removal rate was opposite. The highest removal rate ($8.2{\mu}g$ chl-a/ml supernatant/day) was achieved when low concentration (10 ml/L) was applied. These results suggest that P. aeruginosa AJ1 is a promising biological agent to control the problematic algal bloom.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of purslane extracts on growth inhibition of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441. The purslane extract is effective on retarding growth of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441 and effect of its extract was founded from 1% concentration. At 7% the growth of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441 was suddenly retarded. The stem of purslane in a sunny place on June is more effective than its leaf. Leaves with a red violet color has high effect on retarding growth of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441. These results suggest that purslane extract is effective in growth inhibition of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441.

  • Amino acid transporters are essential for the growth and proliferation in all living cells. Among the amino acid transporters, the system L amino acid transporters are the major nutrient transport system responsible for the $Na^+$-independent transport of neutral amino acids including several essential amino acids. The L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), an isoform of system L amino acid transporter, is highly expressed in cancer cells to support their continuous growth and proliferation. 2-Aminobicyclo-(2,2,1)-heptane-2-carboxylic acid (BCH) is a model compound for the study of amino acid transporter as a system L selective inhibitor. We have examined the effect and mechanism of BCH on cell growth suppression in HEp2 human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The BCH inhibited the L-leucine transport in a concentration-dependent manner with a $IC_{50}$ value of $51.2{\pm}3.8{\mu}M$ in HEp2 cells. The growth of HEp2 cells was inhibited by BCH in the timeand concentration-dependent manners. The formation of DNA ladder was not observed with BCH treatment in the cells. Furthermore, the proteolytic processing of caspase-3 and caspase-7 in the cells were not detected by BCH treatment. These results suggest that the BCH inhibits the growth of HEp2 human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma through the intracellular depletion of neutral amino acids for cell growth without apoptotic processing.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of emotion regulation strategy on posttraumatic growth and to confirm serial multiple mediating effects of self disclosure on a traumatic experience and social support in relationship between suppression strategy of emotional expression and posttraumatic growth. A survey was conducted for adults over the age of 18. Data of 663 adults (222 men, 441 women) were analyzed. According to analysis by using SPSS Process Macro, the less suppression strategy of emotional expression was used, the higher posttraumatic growth was. Simple mediating effect of self disclosure was confirmed between suppression strategy of emotional expression and posttraumatic growth. Serial multiple mediating effects of self disclosure and social support were shown in relationship between suppression strategy of emotional expression and posttraumatic growth. It means that the more people who use less suppression of emotional expression as their emotion regulation strategy, the more they disclose on their traumatic experience, then, they will receive emotional comfort and support from the people around, finally reaching posttraumatic growth. The importance of self disclosure and social support on posttraumatic growth was verified. Counseling intervention method was suggested for involuntary clients who usually suppress emotional expression, to enhance their posttraumatic growth. Lastly, significance and limitations of this study were suggested for follow-up studies.
