A Study on Growth of Graphene/metal Microwires and Their Electrical Properties (금속/그래핀 이중 구조 와이어의 합성 및 전기적 특성 연구)

  • In this study, graphene layer was grown on metal microwire using chemical vapor deposition. The difference of carbon solubility between copper and nickel resulted in the formation of mono-layer and multi-layer graphene were formed on the surfaces of copper and nickel microwires, respectively. During the growth of graphene at high temperature, copper and nickel were recrytallized and the grain size increased. The ampacity of graphene/copper microwire was improved by approximately 27%, 1.91×105 A/㎠, compared to pristine copper microwire. Similar to this behavior, the ampacity of multilayer graphene/nickel microwire was 4.41×104 A/㎠ which is about about 36% improved compared to the pure nickel microwire. The excellent electrical properties of graphene/metal composites are beneficial for supplying the electrical energy to the high-power electronic devices and equipment.

3D Reconstruction of Internal Zonation in Zircon (저어콘의 내부 누대구조의 3차원적 복원기법)

  • A series of the planar cathodoluminescence (CL) and backscattered-electron (BSE) images of magmatic zircon from the Paleozoic Yeongdeok pluton in the southeastern Korean Peninsula were taken using a scanning electron microscope for a 3D reconstruction of internal zonation of zircon. Seven zircon crystals mounted in epoxy were serially polished with average $3{\mu}m$ thickness to their disappearance. Their 3D reconstruction of zonation was performed using the Volume Viewer function in the ImageJ software. The 3D oscillatory zoning pattern of zircon was apparently shown in all the analyzed crystals. This method can further be applied to zircon crystals of multiple growth histories as well as other geological materials.

  • The increasing demand for metallic minerals due to global growth and the continued exploitation of near-surface minerals requires safe and efficient ways to mine ores present in deep mines. In deep mines, stresses concentrated around the cavity increase, which can lead to problems such as induced seismicity and rockbursts. In addition, the transfer of energy from blasting to deeply located faults can cause fault slip, which can lead to earthquakes, and controlling these events is key to deep mining methods. In this technical report, we will introduce the Underhand Closed Bench (UCB) mining method, which can control possible accidents and increase productivity when mining in deep mines.

Real time control of the growth of Ge-Sb-Te multi-layer film as an optical recording media using in-situ ellipsometry (In-situ ellipsometry를 사용한 광기록매체용 Ge-Sb-Te 다층박막성장의 실시간 제어)

  • Using an in-situ ellipsometer, we monitored the growth curve of optical recording media in real time. For confirmation of the thickness control using in-situ ellipsometry, we analyzed the deposited multi-layer sample made of Ge-Sb-Te alloy film and ZnS-Si0$_2$ dielectric films using an exsitu spectroscopic ellipsometer. The target material in the first sputtering gun is ZnS-SiO$_2$ as the protecting dielectric layer and that in the second gun is Ge$_2$sb$_2$Te$_{5}$ as the receding layer. While depositing ZnS-SiO$_2$, Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_{5}$ and ZnS-SiO$_2$ films on c-Si substrate in sequence, we measured Ψ $\Delta$ in real time. Utilizing the complex refractive indices of Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_{5}$ and ZnS-SiO$_2$ obtained from the analysis of spectroscopic ellipsometry data, the evolution of ellipsometric constants Ψ, $\Delta$ with thickness is calculated. By comparing the calculated evolution curve of ellipsometric constants with the measured one, and by analyzing the effect of density variation of the Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_{5}$ recording layer on ellipsometric constants with thickness, we precisely monitored the growth rate of the Ge-Sb-Te multilayer and controlled the growth process. The deviation of the real thicknesses of Ge-Sb-Te multilayer obtained under the strict monitoring is post confirmed to be less than 1.5% from the target structure of ZnS-SiO$_2$(1400 $\AA$)IGST(200 $\AA$)$\mid$ZnS-SiO$_2$(200$\AA$).(200$\AA$).

Mechanical evaluation of SiC-graphite interface of seed crystal module for growing SiC single crystals (탄화규소 단결정 성장을 위한 종자결정모듈의 탄화규소-흑연 간 접합계면의 기계적 특성 평가)

  • Large thermal stress due to the difference between silicon carbide and graphite's coefficients of thermal expansion could be formed during crystal growing process of silicon carbide (SiC) at high temperature. The large thermal stress could separate the SiC seed crystals from graphite components, which bring about the drop of the seed crystal during crystal growth. However, the bonding properties of SiC seed crystal module has hardly reported so far. In this study, SiC and graphite were bonded using 3 types of bonding agents and a three-point bending tests using a mixed-mode flexure test were conducted for the bonded samples to evaluate the bonding characteristics between SiC and graphite. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and X-ray Computed Tomography were used to analyze the bonding characteristics and the microstructures of the SiC-graphite interfaces bonded with the bonding agents. As results, an excellent bonding agent was chosen to fabricate SiC seed crystal module with 50 mm in diameter. An SiC single crystal with 50 mm in diameter was successfully grown without falling out during top seeded solution growth of SiC at high temperature.

Application of Potassium Feldspar pIR-IRSL Method to Dating Quaternary Marine and Fluvial Terrace Sediments in Korea: A Case Study on a Fluvial Terrace and Gusan Fault in Uljin, Korea (한반도 해안-하안단구 퇴적층에 대한 K 장석 pIR-IRSL연대측정법 적용가능성 고찰: 울진 하안단구와 구산단층 연대측정)

  • In this paper, in order to test the possibility of applying K feldspar $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ signal(read out at $290^{\circ}C$) to date old terrace sediments(up to ~ 200 ka, MIS 7) in Korea, we investigated luminescence properties of $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ signals in K feldspar extracts from 27 marine and fluvial terrace sediment samples, and these were compared with those of quartz OSL and conventional K feldspar $IRSL_{50}$ (readout at $50^{\circ}C$) signals. The averaged $2D_0$ value of K feldspar $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ growth curves was ~ 700 Gy, which is consistent with that of $IRSL_{50}$ signal, and this is 3 times higher than that for quartz OSL (~ 250 Gy) on average. Where possible, K feldspar $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ ages were compared with quartz OSL and conventional $IRSL_{50}$ ages. Our preliminary K feldspar $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ ages were older than quartz OSL ages by about 200%, while fading rate-corrected conventional $IRSL_{50}$ ages are in good agreement with those based on quartz OSL. This seems to indicate the possibility of K-feldspar $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ age overestimation due to the presence of unbleachable $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ signals, even with a prolonged exposure to sunlight. Both quartz OSL and K-feldspar $pIR-IRSL_{290}$ signals for the samples from Noeum fluvial terrace and Gusan fault site were all in dose saturation level, thus unable to estimate the formation ages of the sediments. However, $2D_0$ values derived from the dose response growth curves strongly indicate that the Noeum fluvial terrace sediments have formed before 109-140 ka, while the fluvial sediments from Gusan fault were desposited before 100-105 ka. Further, this seems to suggest that the previous quartz OSL ages of ~40-50 ka for Gusan fault sediments should be the underestimated ones due to dose saturation problem.

  • Introduction: Understanding the normal distribution of the tracheal diameter and crross- sectional area is one of the key elements in the management of various tracheal pathologies or tracheal reconstruction for the patients in growing age. However, data for Korean standard has been lacking. This study was designed to analyze retrospectively the distribution of tracheal diameter and cross-sectional area in young Koreans, which can afford fundamental data for the management of tracheal diseases. Material and Method: Of the patients who underwent computerized tomogram of the chest between May 1996 and August 1998, one hundred six young patients(age range: 0-20 years) were included. Patients with any conditions which might affect the tracheal cross-sectional area or diameter, such as tracheal disease, previous operation, mediastinal tumor, or obstructive lung disease were excluded from the study. Gender distribution was 69 males and 37 females. Tracheal diameters, anterior-posterior and transverse, were measured at the level of the thoracic inlet(level I) and the aortic arch(level II). Types of the trachea were divided into round, oval, or horseshoe shaped on cross-sectional view, and the dimension was calculated by using the equation of A=1/4$\pi$ab(A; area, $\pi$; 3.14, a; anterior-posterior diameter, b; transverse diameter). We analyzed the distribution of the diameter at each level and compared the cross-sectional area with respect to age and gender. A p-value lower than 0.05 wa considered significant. Result: The trachea of patients less than 5 years old were round in shape at both of level I and II, and no differences in cross-sectional area was observed between the levels(p=NS). As the age increased, the trachea become oval in shape at level I while it remained round in shape at level II(p=0.020). The tracheal diameter and cross-sectional area increased as the age increased with a linear correlation(r>0.9). In patients less than 5 years of age, female patients showed larger cross-sectional area than male patients (p=0.020), and it was reversed in patients older than 15 years of age(p=0.002). Conclusion: From the above results, we suggest chest computerized tomogram as a safe and reliable tool in measuring the tracheal diameter and cross-sectional area. We also provide the data as a standard for distribution of the tracheal diameter and cross-sectional area in young Korean population.

Development of Neural Network Based Cycle Length Design Model Minimizing Delay for Traffic Responsive Control (실시간 신호제어를 위한 신경망 적용 지체최소화 주기길이 설계모형 개발)

  • The cycle length design model of the Korean traffic responsive signal control systems is devised to vary a cycle length as a response to changes in traffic demand in real time by utilizing parameters specified by a system operator and such field information as degrees of saturation of through phases. Since no explicit guideline is provided to a system operator, the system tends to include ambiguity in terms of the system optimization. In addition, the cycle lengths produced by the existing model have yet been verified if they are comparable to the ones minimizing delay. This paper presents the studies conducted (1) to find shortcomings embedded in the existing model by comparing the cycle lengths produced by the model against the ones minimizing delay and (2) to propose a new direction to design a cycle length minimizing delay and excluding such operator oriented parameters. It was found from the study that the cycle lengths from the existing model fail to minimize delay and promote intersection operational conditions to be unsatisfied when traffic volume is low, due to the feature of the changed target operational volume-to-capacity ratio embedded in the model. The 64 different neural network based cycle length design models were developed based on simulation data surrogating field data. The CORSIM optimal cycle lengths minimizing delay were found through the COST software developed for the study. COST searches for the CORSIM optimal cycle length minimizing delay with a heuristic searching method, a hybrid genetic algorithm. Among 64 models, the best one producing cycle lengths close enough to the optimal was selected through statistical tests. It was found from the verification test that the best model designs a cycle length as similar pattern to the ones minimizing delay. The cycle lengths from the proposed model are comparable to the ones from TRANSYT-7F.

스퍼터링 소스를 이용하여 빗각 증착되어진 TiN 박막의 형상 및 특성 연구

  • 빗각 증착이란 입사 증기가 기판에 수직하게 입사하는 일반적인 공정과는 다르게 증기가 기판의 수직선과 $0^{\circ}$이상의 각을 갖는 증착 방법을 의미한다. 본 연구는 공정 압력이 비교적 높은 스퍼터링 공정에서 빗각 증착을 실시하여 코팅층의 구조제어가 가능한지를 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 조직의 치밀도 향상을 통한 특성 향상을 위해 TiN 박막을 제조함에 있어서 빗각 증착 기술을 응용하여 단층 및 다층 피막을 제조하고 그 특성을 비교하였다. 스퍼터 소스에 장착된 타겟의 크기는 6"이며, 99.5% Ti 타겟을 사용하였고, Ar 가스 분위기에서 기판으로 사용된 Si(100) 위에 코팅하였다. 기판과 타겟 간의 거리는 10 cm이며, 기판은 알코올과 아세톤으로 초음파 세척을 실시한 후 진공챔버에 장착하고 < $2.0{\times}10-5Torr$ 까지 진공배기를 실시하였다. 진공챔버가 기본 압력까지 배기되면 Ar 가스를 주입한 후 RF 파워에 약 300V의 전압을 인가하여 글로우 방전을 발생시키고 약 30분간 청정을 실시하였다. 기판의 청정이 끝난 후 다시 < $2.0{\times}10-5Torr$까지 진공배기를 한 후 Ar 가스를 주입하여 TiN 코팅을 실시하였다. 빗각 증착을 위한 기판의 회전각은 $70^{\circ}$, $80^{\circ}$$-70^{\circ}$, $-80^{\circ}$이며, TiN 박막의 총 두께는 약 $3.5{\sim}4{\mu}m$로 유지하였다. 스퍼터링을 이용한 TiN 박막의 빗각 증착 코팅을 실시하였으며, 공정조건에 따라 주상정이 자라는 모습과 기울어진 각도가 다른 구조를 갖는 박막이 제조되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 빗각증착을 실시하는 중에 기판 홀더에 약 -100 V의 전압을 인가하면 인가하지 않은 막에 비해 치밀한 박막이 성장한다는 사실을 확인하였다. 박막의 성능향상을 위하여 스퍼터 시스템에서 빗각 증착을 이용한 TiN 박막 형성을 실시하였다. SEM 단면 이미지에서 확인해본 결과 주상정이 자라는 형상이 공정 압력이 5 mTorr에서 2 mTorr로 낮아짐에 따라 상대적으로 치밀하면서 일정한 형태로 성장하는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해 스퍼터링을 이용한 빗각 증착의 Structure Engineering 이 가능함을 확인하였으며 박막의 성능을 향상시키는 기술로서 응용 가능할 것으로 보인다.

  • A 15-year-old male was admitted with right-sided chest pain and cough for one month. On chest computed tomographic scan, a $10\times15\times16$ em-sized huge mediastinal mass was occupied in the right hemithorax. Radiologically, it seemed that the tumor was severely adhesive on the heart and the superior vena cava. Therefore we decided on chemotherapy and radiotherapy first instead of surgery. The tumor marker was nearly normalized afterwards, but the tumor size was seemed to be bigger on chest tomographic scan. This suggests the growing teratoma syndrome. After the successful resection, he showed symptomatic improvement and is being followed up without any symptoms in an out patient department up to now.
