  • Purpose: This study examined whether there was a difference in the nutrients and food intake of young children depending on their lunch places. Methods: The dietary survey data of the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010 ~ 2012) were used. The children were grouped into either a child care center lunch group (n = 728) or home lunch group (n = 592) and their nutrients and food intakes were compared. Results: No differences in the 24-hr energy intake and energy intakes from lunch and dinner according to the lunch places were observed. The percentage of breakfast energy was lower in the child care center lunch group, whereas the percentage of snack energy was higher. In children aged 3 ~ 5 years, the sodium, potassium, and vitamin C intakes were high in the child care center lunch group. The 1 ~ 2 years and 3 ~ 5 year old children's vegetable intake from lunch was significantly higher in the child care center lunch group than in the home lunch group. Children aged 3 ~ 5 years in the child care center lunch group consumed more beans and fish at lunch. The adequacy of nutrients and food diversity of child care center lunch appear better than home lunch. Conclusion: Parents and care providers need to make efforts to use diverse foods, such as vegetables and fish, in children's meals to provide balanced diets and promote healthy eating behaviors to their children.

  • A quantitative restriction of maternal diet without changes in quality of diet was given to the Sprague Dawley rats during the third week of gestation and lactation. Half the normal average daily intake of control group was given to deficient groups in this period. Female rats of control group were fed a commercial diet ad libitum throughout the experimental period. Dietary restriction started from birth to weaning in deficient I group and from the 15th day of gestation to weaning in deficient II group. Body and brain weight of offsprings of deficient groups were significantly lower than control group, but the ratios of brain weight to body weight in deficient groups were higher than the control group. Significant difference between deficient groups (I and II) was noticed at weaning. Brain DNA, RNA and total protein of offsprings of deficient groups were significantly lower than control group, but RNA/DNA, brain weight/DNA, and total protein/DNA show that cell number were more affected than the cell size by the maternal dietary restriction during the third week of gestation and lactation. Between the deficient groups, there was a significant difference in brain DNA and RNA, but no significant difference in total brain protein. • The objectives of this study were to examine the growth pattern of infants by anthropometric measurement according to the 5 feeding practices of infants with the subject of two hundred healthy newborn babies from their birth till sixty month of age at intervals of two months. Breast group(BF, n=38), formula group(FF, n=102) and mixed group(ME, n=14) were fed breast milk, formula milk, breast and formula milk, from birth till 6 mo. of age, respectively. Convert 1 group (C1F, n=14) and covert 2 group(CF, n=32) were fed breast milk and mixed milk at 2 mo. of age afterthat switched to formula milk, respectively. From these, the following results were made. All the infants of this study showed superiority to Korean standard growth rate in regards to each growth item for each month age. In the case of males, at their birth, the subscapular skinfold thickness and the total skin fold thickness in the BF group was significantly larger than in MF group and FF group(p<0.05). At 6th month age, the chese circumference of MF group was 45.9cm, and significantly larger than those of BF, FF and C2F groups(p<0.05). In the case of females, at theri birth and 2nd month age, there was no difference among all the feeding groups in regards to each growth rate. At 4th month age, the Kauf index of C1F group was 16.21 and significantly lower than those of four groups(p<0.05). And total skinfold thickness in BF group was larger than in C1F group. The increase rate per month age of all growth items were larger at 2nd month age than at the later months both in males and in females. And until 2nd month age males showed more increase than females in regards to each growth item but after 2nd month age, this sapect did not show up. Multiple linear regression was used to determine predictive factors for infant growth. It was expected that at 6th month age, in the measurement of head circumference and chest circumference and cross-sectional fat area, BF-males were bigger by 22-39% of the explanation index than the infants of other groups. As a result, in spite of the significant lower intakes of energy and nutrients in breast-fed infants than in formula-fed infants, breast-fed infants showed more growth than the average of Korean infant standard growth rate at every month age, and showed no significant growth difference among feeding groups.

  • Traumatic injuries in the young peranent dentition are common, but root fractures, defined as fractures in volving dentin, cementum and pulp, are relatively uncommon. Case 1 is a 9-year-old boy who had a horizontal root fracture of his maxillary right central incisor in the apical third. Root canal therapy was performed in coronal segment and calcium hydroxide therapy was initiated. Six months after treatment, a periapical radiograph showed calcific tissue formation and normal root development. 1 year and 3 months later, the canal was permanently obturated with gutta-percha. Case 2 is a 7-year-old girl who had a vertical root fracture of her maxillary right central incisor. Fractured tooth was intentionally extracted atraumatically, and then the separated fragments are bonded with resin cement. the restored tooth was replanted into the original socket. Recalls up to 8 months showed normal mobility and no periapical pathosis. In these cases, we performed conservative treatment. Clinical and radiographic examination showed no pathosis or abnormality of the teeth and periodontal tissue.

  • Cleidocranial Dysplasia(CCD) is an autosomal dominant human bone disease characterized by abnormal clavicles, patent sutures and fontanelles, and dental anomalies. Among dental anomalies, it is characterized that permanent dentition is severly disturbed due to multiple supernumerary teeth and abnormalities of tooth morphology. A eight-year-old female patient diagnosed as cleidocranial dysplasia visited in our hospital. Upon clinical oral exam, retained deciduous teeth, constriction of dental arch, anterior cross bite, and multiple dental caries were observed. In the dental panoramic radiograph, retained deciduous teeth and multiple supernumerary teeth in the maxilla and the mandible were found. In the cephalometric radiograph, open sutures and wormian bones were seen. In the chest P-A view absence of clavicles was observed. The cleidocranial dysplasia patients have eruption problems in permanent dentition both in regions with and without supernumerary teeth. The severely delayed or arrested eruption of permanent teeth has been ascribed to various factors : 1) The presence of multiple supernumerary teeth, 2) malformed roots with lack of cellular cementum, 3) the jaw bone being too dense, and 4) abnormal resorption of bone and primary teeth. Formation and maturation of primary teeth in cleidocranial dysplasia are normal, whereas the permanent dentition has various anomalies. Therefore, dentists should understand the development of dentition in cleidocranial dysplasia, and treat them in proper time.

  • The first molar is important for mastication and also it plays roles to formation of vertical occlusion and growth of jaw bone after mixed dentition. Impaction of mandibular first molar can result in a short lower facial height, formation of a follicular cyst, pericoronal inflammation, resorption of the roots of neighboring teeth and malocclusion. The options of treatment plans are as follows; observation, surgical exposure, orthodontic traction, surgical relocation and extraction. Surgical exposure could be considered as a basic treatment plan. For surgical exposure it is important to maintain patent channel between the crown and the normal eruptive path into the oral cavity, many techniques including cementation of a celluloid crown, packing with zinc oxide-eugenol surgical pack are used. In these cases, we could observe spontaneous eruption of mandibular first molar using surgical exposure with or without removal of odontoma. Also we could obtain the main patency effectively and conveniently by using surgical pack and translucent retainer.

  • Recently, undifferentiated stem cells which exist in dental papillae of immature permanent teeth were newly discovered and these stem cells appear to be the origin of ameloblasts associated with the formation of root dentin. When treating immature permanent teeth, the preservation of these stem cells induce the continuous formation of the root. Therefore, it is reported that minimal invasion to periapical region in immature permanent teeth with periapical inflammation resulted in good-healing pattern in clinical and radiographic examination. In this case, a 10 year-old boy(mandibular right premolar) and a 8 year-old girl(maxillary left premolar) who visited the department of pediatric dentistry at Chosun University Dental Hospital were diagnosed with pulp necrosis and periapical abscess in clinical and radiographic examination. Endodontic instrumentation to the periapical region was limited and MTA(Mineral Trioxide Aggregate) was applied into the pulp canal. The periodic checks showed healing of periapical abscess and the development and growth pattern of roots. In permanent teeth with pulp necrosis and periapical abscess, preservation of pulp and dental papillae in the periapical region showed good prognosis during the periodic examinations. Therefore, a lot of clinical examination and long-term evaluation of conservative pulp treatment in immature permanent teeth are expected to be necessary.

  • The study focuses on the morphology of larval and juvenile codlets, Bregmaceros atlanticus, collected from the East China Sea in May 2001 and September 2002. A total of 47 individuals were collected by using an IKMT, and the range of their body lengths was $2.41{\sim}17.18$ mm. Specimens can be categorized into two groups: larvae and juvenile. The first group, in which the yolk is completely absorbed, had a body length of 2.41m. They had big heads, and large and thick melanophores were sparsely scattered about the head, bottom of the pectoral fins, rear parts of the trunk and ends of the notochords. The specimens had a body length of 2.54mm and over, and thin and elongated body trunks. Their heads were significantly smaller, including the body depth, and melanophores were coarsely developed all over their bodies. Occipital rays, the first and unique-ray dorsal fin, were observed on individuals of body length greater than 4.01 m, and the rays grew proportionally with body length, but didn't reach the root of the second dorsal fin. The second group, juveniles, had an body length of 9.82mm and over, and their fin rays satisfied the completed numbers of rays and vertebrae for adults. Melanophores were densely scattered all over the body, where thick colors were observed on the rear parts of the dorsal and anal fins and front part of the caudal fin.
