The purpose of this study was to examine the ambivalence of adult children to their elderly parents. 410 adult children who married and having alive mother or father were included. First, direct measurement for asking ambivalence was developed and the relationship between direct and indirect measurements of ambivalence was tested. Next, the influences of parental, children, and relational characteristics on ambivalence were examined. Nine items were selected as direct measurement of ambivalence through the exploratory factor analysis and item response theory. The relationship between direct measure and indirect measure was from .543(p<.000) to r=.625(p<.000) based on gender and generation. The effects of indirect ambivalence on conflict was bigger than direct one for both sons and daughters and the influences of direct measurement on intimacy and relational satisfaction were bigger than indirect one. In case of sons, caregiving obligation was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and value differences was on ambivalence for fathers. For daughters, age of self was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and age of fathers was the one for fathers. These results were discussed on the meanings of ambivalence for elderly mothers and fathers in Korea comparing with Chinese and Western cultures.
This study was conducted to identify the factors that affect the views on marriage of male and female students. Of the students recruited, 172 were male, and 185 were female. Data were collected using questionnaires about views on marriage, children, gender roles, and gender attitudes and were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 23.0 program. Data were collected from May 1, 2019 to June 15, 2019. The significant predictors of views on marriage were views on children(F=29.530, p<.001), gender roles(F=9.850, p<.001) and gender attitudes(F=7.038 p=.009), explaining 33.4% of the variance in male, were views on children(F=48.767, p<.001), gender attitudes(F=32.204, p<.001) and gender roles(F=18.904, p<.001), explaining 43.8% of the variance in female. Therefore, it is necessary to develop programs to improve views on students.
This study examined the relationships between socio-demographic background variables, parent-child differentiation, marital stability, and psychological well-being in 382 eco-boomer married women (born in 1979-1992) whose mothers were born in 1955-1963. As a result, the higher the average monthly contact frequency with the mother, the greater the intimacy (connectivity) with the mother. The higher the number of years of marriage, the lower the marriage stability, the higher the education level, and the higher the average household income were related to the higher the self-acceptance. In addition, compared to women in single-income families, married women who receive help raising their children from their mothers did not form reliable relationships with others or show satisfaction compared to women who do not receive the assistance. Those who were well connected with their mother (or had high intimacy) had higher marriage stability, and those with higher marriage stability had higher psychological well-being. They also had better relationships with other people when married women had a higher level of parent-child differentiation.
This research aimed to verify whether family competency reinforcement had a mediating role on the effect of family cohesion of the Down syndrome family upon the independent life of children with Down syndrome. For the research, 146 families belonged to Down Syndrome Parent Assembly were surveyed and the statistical program SPSS WIN 25.0 was utilized for the data analysis. To verify the mediating effect, Baron and Kenny's causal step strategy was performed. As a result of the study, the higher the family cohesion of the Down syndrome family was, the greater the level of independence of the child was, indicating that the family cohesion had a significant static effect on the independence life. In addition, it was confirmed that the family competency reinforcement played a mediating role between the family cohesion and the children's independent living. Therefore, the results of this research suggested that it might be used as a policy approach and supporting plan for the realization of support for independence of Down syndrome children.
The purpose of this study was to examine how previous grandmaternal child care affects contacts between older mothers and their adult children. This study especially focused on intergenerational long-term reciprocity relationships. In this study, data from the first wave (in 2006) to the forth wave (in 2012) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing yielded a sample of 1,925 elderly mothers and 7,460 adult children. This study employed multi-level analyses considering hierarchical structures between the mothers and their adult children. In this study, past grandmaternal child care was measured by providing care behavior and unit of time for care. Intergenerational contacts was measured by frequency of face-to-face and non-face-to-face contacts. The results showed that adult children who previously received child care from their mothers were more likely to contact to their mothers. Additionally, the increasing amount of time for elderly mothers to provide care to their grandchildren led to more frequent contacts between elderly mothers and their adult children. The findings proved that grandmaternal child care was in important position in reciprocal relationships between elderly mothers and their adult children. Through these results, this study suggested theoretical, policy, and practical implications.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of knowledge that mothers have on child development. To do so, a Knowledge of Child Development Inventory(KCDI) developed by Larsen &Juhasz(1986) was carried on to 156 mothers with an infant range from birth to age 24 months. The findings of the study were twofold: First, 70% of the questions on average were answered correctly by the participants. In other words, mothers generally demonstrated a high level of knowledge on child development. With regard to knowledge of child development, their knowledge on physical development of children was relatively low in comparison with that of cognitive and emotional development. In addition, mothers with a girl were more aware of child development especially in relation to child's emotional development. Also, mothers who delivered a heavier baby at birth possessed a higher level of knowledge concerning child's physical development. Second, other external factors, such as the level of family income and mother's education, played a significant role in affecting the level of knowledge on child development. Unsurprisingly, mothers with a higher income and education level demonstrated a higher level of knowledge on child's cognitive development. The findings of the study implicates that mothers seldom demonstrate a proper level of knowledge on child development. Hence, this study suggests that a practical, functional training services and resources for current and future mothers must be ensued.

The present study investigated the relationship between parental problem drinking and risk for malajustment in adolescents. A group of adolescent children of problem drinkers(126 boys, 210 girls) and a group of children of non-problem drinkers(190 boys, 222 girls) were compared on demographic variables, perceived relationships with parents(parental care and parental over-protection), depression, anxiety, alcohol expectancies, alcohol involvement and self-reported delinquency. Adolescent children of problem drinkers reported lower level of perceived parental care and higher level of perceived parental overprotection compared to the children of nonproblem drinkers. They also reported higher depression, anxiety and alcohol expectancies, as well as more alcohol involvement and delinquent behaviors. Multiple regression analyses were performed seperately for male and female adolescents with depression, anxiety, alcohol expectancies, alcohol involvement and self-reported delinquency as outcome variables. Adolescents' emotional distress(depression and anxiety) was associated with perceived relationships with parents rather than parental problem drinking, but adolescents' alcohol problems and delinquency were associated with parental problem drinking and adolescents' emotional distress rather than their perceived relationships with parents.
We examined if intergenerational proximity might be associated with upstream financial transfer from adult children to older parents, and whether adult child gender might moderate the association. We considered siblings' proximity to parents, as well as that of the adult child. Prior work conducted in the US and other countries has suggested that children living further from parents might provide financial support to compensate for instrumental support provided more by siblings living closer to parents. Data were drawn from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2014). Our analytic sample consisted of older adults 60+ and their children aged 35 and 55. None of the children co-resided with parents. Parental households consisted of either widowed individuals or married couples. For within-family analyses, fixed effects and random effects regression models were estimated. Results suggest first, sons living within a 30-minute distance, or within an hour to two-hour distance provided more monetary support to married parents compared to daughters. Second, contrary to existing findings, greater financial assistance was provided by sons and daughters when no children lived within an hour distance from their parents. For widowed parents living alone, intergenerational proximity was not associated with the amount of financial transfer from adult children.
We use data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) to examine the relationship between child health and household economic resources, and find that economic resources as measured by equivalized expenditure have a statistically significant positive effect on child health and protect children from acute health conditions. We make additional use of the data (where extensive data on children's nutrition, household sanitation, the utilization of medical care, and family health status are available) to assess the mechanisms through which economic resources may affect child health. We find evidence that economic resources have a sizable and significant effect on these potential intermediary factors, and that they, particularly household sanitation, partly explain the protective role of economic resources in child health.
