  • In this paper, deformation characteristics of fiber-mixed-soils were studied at small strain range(0.0001%~1%) using resonant column test and triaxial test, and reinforcement effect was evaluated by the measure of maximum shear moduli. The effects of the major parameters such as fiber content, aspect ratio and fiber type on reinforcement were comparatively assessed. The specimens were remolded from Jumunjin Sand randomly mixed with discrete polypropylene staple fibers. Maximum shear moduli of fiber-mixed-soils increased by up to 30% and modulus reduction was also restrained in nonlinear range. Shear moduli increased as the aspect ratio increases. The reinforcement was more effective with fibrillated fiber than with monofilament fiber. The most effective reinforcement was achieved with the specimen of 0.3 % fiber content.

  • A 5-20 cm thick shocrete has been routinely constructed for NATM tunneling method to stabilize and confine the excavated rock of tunnel construction site. A $40kg/m^3$ of steel fibers are usually mixed into such shotcrete but these steel fibers may not be evenly distributed depending on shotcrete machines, mixing ratios and excavated rock conditions. In this study, square column shotcrete-mimicked concrete specimens of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}55cm$ were prepared with 5 equal layers and 5 or 20% cement ratio. The specimens were prepared with different reinforced-patterns: non-reinforced, middle layer-reinforced, 1, 3, and 5 layers-reinforced, or all layers reinforced. The specimens were air-cured for 7 days and tested for flexural strength. The influence of steel-fiber distribution on flexural strength and toughness of shotcrete-mimicked concrete specimens was investigated. In the case of a specimen with cement ratio of 20%, a flexural strength increased as a number of fiber-reinforced layer increased. The flexural strength of one-layer reinforced specimen showed 20% less than that of evenly fiber-distributed specimen. On the other hand, a specimen with cement ratio of 5% decreased as the number of fiber-reinforced layers increased. A toughness index increased as the number of fiber-reinforced layers increased, regardless of cement ratios. The toughness index of evenly fiber-distributed specimen showed 2-3 times as large as that of one-layer reinforced specimen.

  • Fiber reinforced soils have recently implemented to fills and base layers of highways and railroads, and deformation behaviors of reinforced soils in turn should be investigated. The paper evaluated deformation characteristics of fiber reinforced sands and their effectiveness of reinforcement using resonant column tests. The specimens were prepared by varying gradation and mixing polypropylene staple fibers of 0.3% fiber content. Maximum shear moduli of reinforced sands were increased by up to 30% with increasing uniformity coefficient. Shear moduli of well-graded reinforced sands were larger than those of poorly-graded ones regardless of confining pressure in the whole range of shearing strain and reinforcement was, in turn, more effective with higher uniformity coefficient.

  • In the paper, deformation characteristics of fiber-mixed-soils, mixed polypropylene staple fibers of 0.3% fiber content with sands of various gradation, and their effectiveness of reinforcement were evaluated. A series of Resonant Column tests were performed with specimens prepared with varying Uniformity Coefficient and constant Curvature Coefficient. Maximum shear moduli 01 fiber-mixed-soils were increased by up to 30% and modulus reduction was also restrained in nonlinear range. Normalized shear modulus reduction curves of fiber-mixed-soils shift close to the upper limit of Seed curd Idriss's curves and are located within narrower band than those of unmixed soils, which proves the effectiveness on stiffness increment by reinforcing soils with fibers.

  • A study on cemented sand reinforced with short fibers was carried out to improve its unconfined compressive strength and brittle behavior. Nak-dong River sand was mixed with Portland cement and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers. A PVA fiber widely used for concrete reinforcement is randomly distributed into cemented sand. Nak-dong River sand, cement and fibers with optimum water content were compacted in 5 layers and then cured for 7 days. The effect of fiber reinforcement rather than cementation was emphasized by using a small amount of cement. Weakly cemented sand with a cement/sand ratio less than 8% was fiber-reinforced with different fiber ratios and tested for unconfined compression tests. The effect of fiber ratio and cement ratio on unconfined compressive strength was investigated. Fiber-reinforced cemented sand with 2% cement ratio showed up to six times strength to non-reinforced cemented sand. Because of ductile behavior of fiber-reinforced specimens, an axial strain at peak stress of specimens with 2% cement ratio increases up to 7% as a fiber ratio increases. The effect of 1% fiber addition into 2% cemented sand on friction angle and cohesion was analyzed separately. When the fiber reinforcement is related to friction angle increase, the 8% of applied stress transferred to 1% fibers within specimens.

• Use of both carbon fiber (CF) and glass fiber (GF) at the same time to strengthen existing flexural members was exploited. Using a proper volumetric GF / CF ratio, the CF can rupture first followed by subsequent rupture of GF at higher stress and strain showing a pseudo-ductile behavior. A theoretical study indicated that the ratio is 4.62 : 1 and higher where the pseudoductile effect can be shown. Flexural tests of plain concrete beams strengthened using fibers were first carried out. Hybrid FRP sheet using 8.8 : 1 ratio was then fabricated and the sheet was used to strengthen reinforced concrete beams. The RC beams strengthened using 1-ply and 2-ply hybrid sheets both revealed increased strength over a non-strengthened beam and ductile flexural behavior. A comparable beam strengthened using CF also showed increased strength but with limited ductility.

  • Analysis of wettability between epoxy resin and glass fabric was studied. The mixing ratios of epoxy resin and anhydride hardener were varied as 1:0.5, l:l and l:1.2. Catalyst content was fixed as 0.1wt% of the mixed resin. A curing analysis by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) showed a possible impregnation of the mixed resin at the room temperature. An effective contact angle of the mixed epoxy resin drop onto the glass fabric being preset on a flat glass plate was measured as a function of time. The wet area of the epoxy resin drop was also measured. Behaviors of the contact angle, the droplet height, the neat wet area and the coefficient of wettability were used to evaluate the wettability of the epoxy resin onto the glass fabric. It was concluded that the equivalent ratio of 1: 1.2 was the most suitable for the wettability.

  • Fiber composite is high anticorrosive, high strength and low weight ratio of strength(1/4 of reinforcing bar) so that strengthens concrete structures without increase of additional weight. But fiber composite has a brittle character which increases to the maximum stress point lineally and is suddenly destroyed. Hybrid fiber composite is developed to overcome weakness of fiber composite. The hybrid fiber composite is manufactured by bar type and consists of 9:1 volume ratio(glass : carbon). In this study the result indicates that it is purposed to find out reinforcing characteristics of hybrid fiber composite fixed with impact anchor.

  • The behavior of fiber-reinforced cemented sands (FRCS) was studied to improve a brittle failure mode observed in cemented sands. Nak-dong River sand was mixed with ordinary Portland cement and a Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber. A PVA fiber is widely used in concrete and cement reinforcement. It has a good adhesive property to cement and a specific gravity of 1.3. A PVA fiber has a diameter of 0.1 mm that is thicker than general PVA fiber for reinforced cement. Clean Nak-dong River sand, cement and fiber at optimum water content were compacted in 5 layers giving 55 blows per layer. They were cured for 7 days. Cemented sands with a cement/sand ratio of 4% were fiber-reinforced at different locations and tested for unconfined compression tests. The effect of fiber reinforcement form and distribution on strength was investigated. A specimen with evenly distributed fiber showed two times more strength than not-evenly reinforced specimen. The strength of fiber-reinforced cemented sands increases as fiber reinforcement ratio increases. A fully reinforced specimen was 1.5 times stronger than a specimen reinforced at only middle part. FRCS behavior was controlled not only by a dosage of fiber but also by fiber distribution methods or fiber types.
